3 NINTEENTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME AUGUST 12, 2018 Dear Friends, If you ve ever heard of Our Lady of Lourdes, you know then the story of St. Bernadette. born in 1844, [she was] the first child of an extremely poor miller in the town of Lourdes in southern France. The family was living in the basement of a dilapidated building when on February 11, 1858, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Bernadette in a cave above the banks of the Gave River near Lourdes There were 18 appearances in all, the final one occurring on the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, July 16. Although Bernadette s initial reports provoked skepticism, her daily visions of the Lady brought great crowds of the curious. The Lady, Bernadette explained, had instructed her to have a chapel built on the spot of the visions. There, the people were to come to wash in and drink of the water of the spring that had welled up from the very spot where Bernadette had been instructed to dig. 1 It's this spring of water that still remains today that I wish to discuss. From it, there have been many miraculous healings have occurred. Recently, a 70 th officially recognized miracle took place that was reported near the feast day of back in February. The miraculous event involved a French nun, Sister Bernadette Moriau, who went on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes in She had been suffering from spinal complications which had rendered her wheelchair-bound and fully disabled since She also said she had been taking morphine to control the pain. When Sister Moriau visited the Lourdes Shrine almost a decade ago, she said she never asked for a miracle, according to the Associated Press. However, after attending a blessing for the sick at the shrine, something began to change. I felt a [surge of] well-being throughout my body, a relaxation, warmth I returned to my room and there, a voice told me to take off your braces, recalled the now 79-year old nun. Surprise. I could move, Moriau said, noting that she instantaneously walked away from her wheelchair, braces, and pain medications. 2 The case was brought to the attention of the International Medical Committee of Lourdes, who extensively researched the nun s recovery. They eventually found that Moriau s healing could not be scientifically explained. 3 While there have been more than 7,000 miraculous recoveries attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes at the French shrine, only 70 cases have been officially recognized by the Catholic Church. A miraculous recovery must generally be a complete, spontaneous, and immediate healing from a documented medical condition. 4 Our Blessed Mother is our Mother too. As we approach the Feast Day of Assumption this Wednesday Evening (a Holy Day of Obligation), let us, as the Memorare states, flee to her protection, implore her help, and seek the intercession of her who will not leave us unaided. Feast of the Assump on Pilgrimage in Leicester The Sisters of Mercy are hos ng the 117 th Annual Mass and Pilgrimage to Our Lady s Gro o at Nazareth on Wednesday, Aug. 15, the Feast of the Assump on of Our Lady into heaven. The procession leaves the parking lot at St. Joseph Church in Leicester at 9:15 am arriving at the Gro o at 10 am for Mass. Fr. Richard Reidy will be the principal celebrant. Following Mass there is a recep on on the Nazareth grounds. All are welcome!

5 Wanted - Religious Education Teachers It is that time of year again...back to school and back to religious education classes! As always, our students are very blessed to have so many dedicated and returning teachers. However, we do need teachers for some of our classes. For those of you that may have some flexibility in your schedule, we desperately need teachers after school on Monday and Tuesday. Class times are 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. for the middle schoolers and 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. for the elementary school students. We are also in need of teachers for the middle schoolers on Monday night from 7-8 p.m. We have excellent teacher manuals that make teaching very easy. Please prayerfully consider whether you are being called in this very rewarding ministry. If you are interested please contact Jean Urbanowski or Chris Mulry in the Parish Center ( ). Thank you! Religious Education Registration We have started planning next year s religious education program and recruiting new teachers. We are always in need of teachers and have classes scheduled this year for Sunday morning, Sunday night, Monday afternoon, Monday night and Tuesday afternoon. Please prayerfully consider if you could volunteer your time to assist us in the very rewarding ministry of teaching our faith to our young parishioners.
