3 FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT DECEMBER 3, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, As we begin this Advent season, we come to the final entry in the corporal and spiritual works of mercy writings that have been in the bulletin over these last months. To conclude, we will end with two final Corporal works of Mercy: Shelter the Homeless and Visit the imprisoned. For so many of us, either of these works of mercy might seem very difficult as we may feel unequipped for both. In my time as a Seminarian, I had two experiences with these works of mercy that proved very formative. Once, while serving in the Fitchburg area for the summer, I was exposed to helping out with the Interfaith Hospitality Network s initiative for housing families. The experience involved me simply being responsible for making sure the families had what they needed as they settled for the night. The parish where I served had a rotation of people that would cover a particular time periods in the off hours when staff would return home. At least 2-3 people were there to make sure the rules of the facility were maintained and any needs in the off-hours were provided for. Visiting the imprisoned involved me serving by teaching a class on prayer to those imprisoned in MCI Framingham. Once a week, along with a fellow seminarian, we would travel from St. John s in Brighton to Framingham to serve the women who desired to grow in their faith life. While challenging, the gratitude encountered from those who were trying to turn their lives around was humbling. While you never felt like you were doing enough, the appreciation and thankfulness never ceased because the gift of prayer was one that sustained throughout the week. It was an important lesson that in spite of what we perceive as our smallness in being able to help, small things done in great love have an enormous impact. For us here in Rutland, we serve those who need to be sheltered and visit the (now formerly) imprisoned through the gift of helping out at Dismas Farm. I encourage all to consider helping out in whatever way you can through your gifts of time, talent and treasure in whatever way the Lord is prompting you. Perhaps there is even a different way than anything I ve written about that God is calling you towards. In whatever manner He is calling you, respond generously. You ll always receive more by giving, because God is not outdone in generosity God Bless, Fr. Jim ST. Please remember to attach the GIFT TAG you have selected to your present and place it under the Giving Tree on or before Sunday, December 17. This will enable us to deliver the gifts before Christmas. Thank you for helping us to make Christmas a reflection of the generous Christmas Spirit that is so evident here at St. Patrick s. Please keep our candidates in your prayers this weekend as they go to the Cathedral to receive Confirmation, the third Sacrament of Initiation. 23 young people from our parish will be confirmed by Bishop McManus this Sunday, December 3 rd and one will be confirmed on Sunday, December 10 th. Both Confirmation ceremonies are at 3:00 pm and anyone is welcome to attend.

Remember, our time on earth is a gift. None of us knows how long we will be here. Start today and begin thanking God for each and every day. 5 Mesa Farm s Annual Holiday Performance of The Living Nativity A Living Nativity performance will be held at Mesa Farm in Rutland on December 9th and 10th, Two performances will be held each evening; at 4:00 and 5:30 PM. The hour long shows will consist of carol singing and a narration and re-enactment of the nativity story in a barn with live animals. There will be no charge although attendees are requested to bring a plate of cookies to share. Hot chocolate and coffee will be provided. The Sunday performances will have sign language interpretation. Mesa Farm is at 67 Muschopauge Road in Rutland.
