3 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 18, 2018 Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, How does Christ love? What is this love that moves Our Lord in such a way that he willing lays down his life for the salvation of the world, especially when some would rather have nothing to do with him? The Greek s had many words for love: Phila A love of friendship (hence Philadelphia the city of Brotherly Love), Eros the romantic and passionate love described from the Greek language by Pope Benedict in his teaching encyclical Deus Caritas Est (God is Love), as that love between man and woman which is neither planned nor willed, but somehow imposes itself upon human beings. (DCE, 3). Finally, there is the word Agape-: this word expresses the experience of a love which involves a real discovery of the other, moving beyond the selfish character that prevailed earlier. Love now becomes concern and care for the other. No longer is it self-seeking, a sinking in the intoxication of happiness; instead it seeks the good of the beloved: it becomes renunciation and it is ready, and even willing, for sacrifice. (DCE, 6). As we read this, we should see that love of Christ: willing to sacrifice for the good of beloved. Like all things, these aspects of love are meant to inform one another and draw us into the mystery and depths of authentic love that comes from God, who is love (1 Jn 4:16). Even more so, we are called to love not only God in this manner, but our neighbor with this same sacrificial love in service of others. In this Lenten Season, we are called examine our own lives and to continue our journey toward living such a love; to love as Christ loves in all aspects of our lives. Let us never be afraid of the demands and depth of such love that truly leads us to fulfillment. God Bless, Fr. Jim 5 th Sunday of Lent I will be their God and they shall be my people. (Jeremiah 31:33) What does it mean to be God s people? It means we recognize that everything we have and everything we are belongs to God. We aren t owners of anything, we are merely stewards of the gifts God has given us. It means we are willing to use our gifts and our lives to care for our neighbors and the world, just as God cares for us. Irish Soda Bread Fundraiser Happy St. Patrick s Day! Our high school students who are going on the Young Neighbors in Action Mission Trip and the Steubenville East Catholic Youth Conference this summer are baking Irish soda bread to sell after Masses on the weekend of and March 17/18. 4 March 18, 2018 Fifth Sunday of Lent JER 31: 31-34; PS 51: 3-4, 12-15; HEB 5: 7-9; JN 12: Easter Sunday is but two weeks away (April 1). In our First Reading from the prophet Jeremiah, we hear God tell us, I will forgive their evildoing and remember their sin no more. To affirm that forgiveness, St. Paul has this to say in the Second Reading: He (Jesus) became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him. There is a connection between these two statements which present forgiveness as the way to salvation. The Lenten season is one of penance, reflection, prayer, almsgiving, and fasting, perhaps even in that order, so we can better prepare ourselves for Easter Sunday and beyond. Lent reminds us that God is gracious and merciful. God s divine mercy is a central theme of Lent. One might say that the priceless gift of God s mercy is highlighted and celebrated in the Church in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (confession). That should be a key part of our Lenten journey. As mentioned only two weeks remain on that journey so getting to reconciliation is important if we have not done so already. Sacramental confession allows God s loving mercy and His grace-filled absolution to be confirmed to us through a priest. God sees us with love, mercy, and an abundance of forgiveness. Christ, through the priest, helps us to let go of anything that gets in the way of our relationship to God. St. Isidore wrote, Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin. All hope consists in confession. In confession there is a chance for mercy.
