Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. (MATTHEW 25:21) God expects us to nurture and develop the gifts He has given us and then generously return a portion with increase. He doesn t want us to waste or hoard the gifts He has given us; He expects us to grow our gifts, use them wisely and be generous with them. Unfortunately, many of us are not generous in proportion to all that God has given us.

3 THIRTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 19, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Iron is sharpened by iron; one person sharpens another. (Prov. 27:17). We are called to care for one another, but that also means there are times where we must call each other to account when we are moving away from the God who loves us and gives us the way to an authentic joy. It is in this light that we speak if the Spiritual Work of Mercy, Admonish the Sinner. This work of Mercy is indeed a balancing act between creating a culture that does not approve or turn a blind eye to sin, while at the same time realizing we all fall at times and are all in need of Mercy. This always starts within our own hearts first, as Our Lord does call us to "remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter from your brother's eye" (Mt 7:5). But we are all called in authentic love to call one another back to Christ. If that time should arise, we must never ask out of arrogance, but act in a manner that reflects our continuing need of God s Mercy in our own lives. So how do we live this out? The answer lies in a portrait that hangs upon the back wall of the Church The picture of Divine Mercy. Jesus, I Trust in You. These words are not just mere platitudes, but the greatest desire of Our Savior s Sacred Heart. When we begin to take Jesus Christ at His word that He does indeed have the words of eternal life (Jn 6:68), and with His grace and mercy begin to live this out, we will in the same way be able to reflect that grace and mercy to others in our interactions with one another. It all starts with our willingness to trust. God Bless, Fr. Jim Christmas Miracles and Magic The Senior High Youth Group is hosting the 7 th annual Christmas Miracles and Magic at the Rutland Sportsman Club on Saturday, December 2nd from 7-11 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person and include appetizers, desserts, and music by the Otters. There will also be raffles and door prizes. This event benefits the Rutland Food Pantry and the Angel Tree. 4 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, In the United States, more than 46 million people are living in poverty. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) is our anti-poverty program to help them find hope and a way to a more secure life. Your support of this collection reaches those living on the margins and gives them a hand up, not a hand out. For example, around Charleston, South Carolina, many children live in poverty, creating undue stress and uncertainty in their lives. Compounding these problems, deteriorating school systems struggle to provide quality education and appropriate discipline, and there is a high rate of school-based arrests. By engaging congregations and communities all over the city, the Charleston Area Justice Ministry is working to improve the education system and keep kids in school and out of the juvenile justice system. With your support of the CCHD Collection, the Charleston Area Justice Ministry is able to provide community engagement to reduce youth arrests and violence. This collection is the primary source of funding for CCHD s anti-poverty grants and education programs. Twenty-five percent of the collection stays here in our diocese. On October 30, I once again had the privilege of meeting with our parish and community groups who receive the local grants from this campaign. It is always inspiring to me to see how these small seeds grow into fruitful programs to support the dignity of people who find themselves most often on the margin in our cities and towns. Please help the efforts of CCHD to break the cycle of poverty. Fight poverty in Central Massachusetts and in America. Support CCHD on November 18 & 19 and participate in the inaugural World Day of the Poor called for by our Holy Father, Pope Francis.
