3 SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY February 8, 2018 Dear friends in Christ, Since my installation as Bishop of Worcester in 2004, I have witnessed tremendous blessings as a result of our efforts in education, charity and ministry, made possible in great part by the continued successes of the Partners in Charity Appeal to fund our various agencies and ministries. The annual Partners in Charity Appeal, like parish weekly offertory envelopes, supports the operational costs associated with the various ministries and maintenance issues of the diocese and its parishes. When you look at the diocesan annual report or your parish financial report, you can see how, typically, all those donations are spent by the end of the year, and sometimes more is spent than was raised due to emergency needs or unforeseen issues. Unlike an annual appeal or offertory, capital campaigns are conducted to address long-term needs, such as endowing certain ministries or education programs to assure continued funding, or addressing major capital expenditures that could range from building improvements to even debt reduction. These are all necessary in order to be a financially sound organization and for the Catholic Church to be able to focus on its evangelizing mission. Ignoring capital repairs for too long places impossible burdens on a parish or diocesan operational budget. The situation is no different in our homes. An emergency such as an old furnace failing in the middle of winter and causing frozen pipes, or a leaking roof damaging interior contents of a home are often due to constantly postponing taking care of capital needs. Dealing with those needs as emergencies places impossible strains on a household s monthly budget and, in the end, costs a great deal more to resolve. Last Spring, we began to study the long-term needs of our diocese and the financial challenges our parishes and diocese will be facing in the years ahead. We began to consider a diocesan-wide capital campaign that would benefit the parishes and the pastoral ministries of the Diocese. Our last diocesan capital campaign, Forward in Faith, was conducted in 1999 and was a great blessing to our diocese for more than a decade. The results and the impact of that campaign 18 years later are posted online at worcesterdiocese.org/forward-in-faith. Several months ago, I named a committee to help me determine if the time was right for our diocese to conduct a capital campaign. After interviews with various firms and extensive discussions, I chose Guidance in Giving, Inc. to conduct a feasibility study for a capital campaign. They are a Catholic organization involved with stewardship and development for parishes and dioceses throughout the United States and have raised over $5 billion for Catholic organizations over the past 38 years, including Archdioceses of Boston and Hartford, and the Dioceses of Springfield, Providence and Fall River. Following personal interviews with many pastors in our diocese, and having met with associate pastors, religious and lay people, Guidance in Giving will develop a well-thought out plan with specific recommendations. As part of that effort, we have developed a survey available online and in The Catholic Free Press to give all households in the Diocese of Worcester an opportunity to participate in the process. I invite you to complete the survey which will help us develop a well-informed feasibility study. Please visit worcesterdiocese.org and click on the "Diocesan Planning Study" link. Your input, which will be kept confidential, is vital as we look to ways to support our diocesan parishes and ministries. Please keep our efforts in your prayers as, together, we seek to assure continued focus on our evangelizing mission in the Diocese of Worcester. With every prayerful best wish I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester
4 February 9, 2018 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, For over 50 years, the Collection for the Church in Latin America has been a sign of the solidarity of the Church in the United States with the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. The distance in rural areas and deteriorated roads make it difficult for some communities to have Mass regularly. Language barriers and lack of resources make catechetical materials difficult to produce. We are called to share our faith with all, and this collection is a prophetic and bold way to do so. In Cuba, in the Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana, the Church is not present in many of the smaller or rural communities. For many years, there were no ministers and there was no mission house not to mention a church building to which the people could turn. The message of the Gospel could not spread, because there were very few messengers to share it and few places where people could go to hear it. But with your support, pastoral agents have received training to bring the Gospel to these areas and neighborhoods. Your support has helped bring people to the Church, through religious education and retreats, and the Church to the people, through evangelization efforts and the repair of church buildings. This has given them the hope and the joy of the Gospel. The Collection for the Church in Latin America, through projects like these, empowers the faithful of Latin America and the Caribbean to deepen their faith and share it with each other and the world. A significant portion of this collection is also used to assist in the ongoing efforts of our own Diocesan Hispanic Ministry, which serves the large number of Hispanic and Latino Catholics who are now in the Diocese of Worcester. It is gratifying to see the life of faith flourishing in these parish communities as their faith life enriches us all. I encourage you to respond to the theme to Share your Faith by supporting the special Collection for the Church in Latin America in our parishes on the weekend of February 18. Please be assured of my appreciation for your generous response to this collection. With every prayerful best wish, I remain, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester
5 Storing the Alleluia We are storing the Alleluia at Mass this weekend. The children of our parish will perform a ceremony to highlight the Church s custom of not speaking or singing the word Alleluia during Lent. It is considered an Easter word and by not using the word for the forty days of Lent, we will come to appreciate just how joyful this acclamation is.
