3 Sacraments & ministries The Sacrament of the Sick Anyone preparing for surgery, the elderly, the chronically ill, may receive this Sacrament. It is usually celebrated at a weekday Mass or at home. We will be showing 23 Blast, a very inspirational movie about a high school football player who loses his sight and then guided by his faith rejoins the team and plays at a high level. 4 Eagle scout project at saint joseph church This past week, one of our former altar servers and graduate of Saint Joseph School, Eagle Scout-prospect Jack Ryan approached me about doing his eagle project in our church. We had a conversation about his ideas and he decided that he would like to build a more suitable baptismal area in our church. According to the United States Conference of Bishop s document entitled Built of Living stones: 66 The rites of baptism, the first of the sacraments of initiation, require a prominent place for celebration. 89 Initiation into the Church is entrance into a Eucharistic community united in Jesus Christ. Because the Rites of Initiation of the Church begin with baptism and are completed by the reception of the Eucharist, the baptismal font and its location reflect the Christian's journey through the waters of baptism to the altar. This integral relationship between the baptismal font and the altar can be demonstrated in a variety of ways, such as placing the font and altar on the same architectural axis, using natural or artificial lighting, using the same floor patterns, and using common or similar materials and elements of design. 67 The location of the baptismal font, its design, and the materials used for its construction are important considerations in the planning and design of the building. It is customary to locate the baptismal font either in a special area within the main body of the church or in a separate baptistry. Through the waters of baptism the faithful enter the life of Christ. 90 For this reason the font should be visible and accessible to all who enter the church building. While the baptistry is proportioned to the building itself and should be able to hold a good number of people, its actual size will be determined by the needs of the local community. Therefore, it has been decided that the former confessionals (in the rear of the church) will be taken down (since we already have a Reconciliation Room) and the materials that were used to construct the old confessional will be moved into the present Reconciliation Room. This confessional is being taken down because according to the regulations of Protecting God s Children and diocesan law, priests are no longer allowed to hear confessions of children in such areas. The present Reconciliation Room is a more fitting and proper place to hear these confessions. Additionally, the original baptismal font (which is presently in front of the Blessed Mother s statue) will be retrofitted and reused in this new baptism area. We look forward to seeing the hard work and dedication of Jack in this Eagle Scout Project as we support him with our prayers and best wishes. Father ST Bishop s annual appeal Prayer for catechists As you consider your pledge to the 2015 Bishop s Annual Appeal, it is important to know that this particular fund helps the immediate, day-to-day operations of four important ministries and programs: Catholic Charities Seminarian education Our diocesan priests retirement residence Our inner-city Catholic schools. We ask you to please be as generous (as you have been in the past) to this year s Bishop s Annual Appeal. If you have received the Bishop s letter, we ask that you kindly and prayerfully respond today. O God, our Heavenly Father, You have given us the gift of catechists for our children. We lift them up to You in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hopes and needs. We pray that our parish family of Saint Joseph will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share in Christ s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of His Disciples; contributing our gifts to the communion of faith, the Church. We ask this in Jesus Name. Amen.

There is a wedding scheduled in the church at 3:00 pm. National life chain On the first Sunday in October, churches nationwide gather to take a public stand and pray to end abortion. Participants hold signs with life-affirming messages while they stand quietly and pray. When: October 4,2015 from 2:00 to 3:30 pm.
