3 A Tribute to Carole Sudol As many of your know, Carole Sudol was a dear friend of mine from Wallington along with her long time and cherished companion Michael Rizzo. During my short time here in Newton, Carole befriended our own Rosie Woodring, as they were both battling cancer in their lives. They became fast friends and a great support for one another. Carole is best known in Newton for her generosity in donating to me personally, the beautiful liturgical banners which are displayed during Ordinary Time, Lent, Advent this past Christmas and now for the first time, this coming Easter Season. Her memory and the memory of her parents will be forever cherished each and every time I hang these banners in whichever church I am assigned. In the last 16+ years that I knew Carole, the two things that I heard the most were: It is Carole with an E and I think I had her or him as my student. Carole taught in East Rutherford for over 36 years. About a month ago, I had the opportunity to sit and talk with Carole about her eventual death and she told me that I do not want to give all this up. I am not hurting for anything and I do not want to leave, but someone else is making the choice for me. And after 21 treatments of chemotherapy, 10 bouts of radiation and 5 surgical procedures, she had had enough! She said I cannot wait to see the people that I love who are waiting for me. Carole was not afraid to die. Carole longed to see the first love of her life, her loving father. Mr. Anthony Ed Sudol was the first person to teach Carole what unconditional love was. And it was this example, that led her on her own quest for such a similar love after he died in When I asked Carole what her best quality was as a person, she told me that she could actually feel what people were thinking. And when I asked her what her least greatest quality was, she quickly responded I can go from in a second when I am angry. I often times have little tolerance for stupidity. I just do not understand how some people just do not get it. I asked her what she would want to say at her funeral and she said: I loved to teach. When Friday came, I could not wait until Monday rolled around again, because I was ready to get back to teaching again, from the first to the last day that I taught my students. In the words of the Superintendent of Schools, Carole was a Master Teacher. She also was a humanitarian and lover of animals, a genuine, warm, generous, sincere, good person that was tenacious, at times to a fault, but held integrity, honesty and her faith, as truths that were never to be compromised or bargained against. I thought of Carole this past week when I was listening to the inquiry of the Supreme Court Nominee, the Honorable Neil Gorsuch when he was asked how he would judge his tenure on the bench. He answered by telling how he asks his children to write their own obituaries each year and read them aloud. He said that people want to be remembered for the kindnesses they have shown to other people in their lives. It is not how big your bank account balances are, nobody puts that in their obituary, or that they billed the most hours or won the most cases, but how they treated other people along the way. He went on to quote former governor of Massachusetts, Increase Sumners whose tombstone reads: As a lawyer, he was faithful and able; as a judge, patient, impartial, and decisive; In private life, he was affectionate and mild; in public life, he was dignified and firm. Party feuds were allayed by the correctness of his conduct; calumny was silenced by the weight of his virtues; and rancor softened by the amenity of his manners. Judge Gorsuch quoted Bernard Shaw, who said: The great joy in life is to dedicate yourself to a cause that you deem mighty before you are thrown on the scrapheap. That cause for Carole was teaching. Not a student of the law, but a teacher of life to her students. For she too will be remembered for the kindnesses that she had shown to so many people and one of those grateful recipients of her kindness was me. Carole was an immediate member of my fan club when we first met in Wallington. She followed me to every church I served in, whether it was in Wallington, Union City, Bayonne, Wayne and she even made the hour drive to Newton when she was able this past 1.5 years. As a student, Carole was faithful and able. As a teacher she was patient, impartial and decisive, but as my friend, she was affectionate and feisty (one of the qualities which I loved about her the best). She was generous, thoughtful, selfless, giving, all the while, she could mow you over with a look or a well thought out sentence to put you in your place. Perfectly and always grammatically correct, to the point and spot on. And similar to Mr. Sumner s epitaph: Teacher union feuds were allayed by the correctness of her virtues and rancor was softened by the amenity of her manners. That is why I chose the Gospel of Saint Matthew for her funeral Mass (Matthew 25:31-40); for at the end of our lives, the Lord will not ask how much money we have, what our portfolio looks like or what kind of car we drive, but He will ask us quite simply: when did we give food to the poor, visit the sick and clothe the naked; when were we generous with our time, talents and treasure? Quite remarkably for over 36 years, Carole fed her students with the knowledge that gave them their fill in mind and body. She visited them wherever they were in the lives, some of them in perfect and some less than perfect places. She clothed the nakedness of their ignorance with knowledge, life lessons with patient endurance and dignified stamina. There is no doubt that Carole (remember the E ) Sudol is now looking down upon us, critiquing this article, reminding me of my run-on sentences and typographical errors, but all the while smiling from ear to ear, knowing that she truly has run the race and fought the good fight and now enjoys the reward of all her good deeds. Today, our Church s light is dimmer, but the blaze of glory in heaven shines even brighter knowing that Carole Ann Sudol is part of the company of saints and angels and heaven. Carole will be forever remembered in whatever church I am assigned to because of her great generosity in donating banners that she saw hung many times. Carole I thank you for sharing the wonderful gift of yourself and for the many lessons that you taught me about life, about love, about friendship, about commitment, about fortitude, about generosity, about continuing to forge through some difficult things in life and always coming out smiling, cheerful and with a positive attitude (even if it took you years to accomplish these things). Thank you Mrs. Sudol! for being a great teacher. Thank you for the gift that you were and the gift that you continue to be. And thank you Carole, my friend, you will be missed and I will love you forever.

But we are having trouble keeping it well stocked. Each week, by the end of our Monday morning food distribution, the shelves are bare. Please remember Father ST s request to bring two or more cans or boxes of food for the poor each weekend when you come to Mass during Lent. We are in need of all types of food (except pasta and green beans). We also need paper products, toiletries, detergents and cleaning products. For your convenience we have wallet sized printed cards available. These cards list this month s food pantry needs. Please feel free to take a card, so that you can refer to it when shopping. Pizza fundraiser The Don Bosco Columbiettes Auxiliary No is having a pizza fundraiser at the Villa Capri Restaurant on Route 206 in Newton on Friday, April 14 th. Please help the Columbiettes raise money for scholarships and local charities. Villa Capri will donate $1 for every pizza sold all day on Friday, April 14 th. So, treat your family to some really great pizza and help raise money for charity! New cushions for the pews As was mentioned in the previous bulletin, new pew cushions are going to be ordered in new few months. We will need 66 new pew cushions which will be replaced at a cost of $130/cushion. To date, we have 10 people that have come forward to purchase new cushions (2 of which were ordered by Father ST for friends who have died). The old cushions are in horrible repair and need to be completely replaced. Therefore, all of the old cushions will be removed after the Easter Season. If you would like to purchase a new cushion for the pew which you sit in each week, please Father ST and let him know that you are interested. You may also donate one or more cushions in loving memory of your relatives or friends. Come be part of this endeavor to make our worship space more beautiful and comfortable! adoration There will be Benediction and Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament on the First Friday of the month, April 7 th from 12:30 until 3:00pm. All Are Welcome to spend some time before our Eucharistic Lord.

Diaper drive Some of the many diapers collected by t h e K n i g h t s o f Columbus this past weekend that will be used to help families from our food pantry as well as Birth Haven and other groups that work to fill the needs of our community.
