If everyone gave just $3 more each week, we would meet our goal! 2016 bishop s annual appeal Many parishioners have received, or will soon be receiving a letter from Bishop Serratelli requesting your support for the 2016 Bishop s Annual Appeal. This year, the theme of the Appeal is Be Rich in Good Works. The Bishop s Annual Appeal supports four very worthy causes: our Catholic Charities agencies; Nazareth Village (our retired priests residence); our inner-city elementary schools and seminarian education. Last year s Appeal raised a record amount which meant that even more could be done for the people in our Diocese. You can help make this year s Appeal an even greater success by making a generous pledge today. Whatever you can do to help will be a great blessing! Thank you for your continued generosity. Food pantry Do you have any extra: Shelf life milk Coffee, Mayonnaise, cooking oil, detergent for clothes, dish detergent, bleach, paper towels, sugar, pasta sauce (red & white), syrup, men s body wash, razors, cookies, tissues, canned fruit, Uncle Ben s ready rice, instant potatoes, cake mix, kids tooth paste, shampoo, conditioner, tissues, Spaghettio s and Chef Boyardee. Father ST has asked that each person (children & adults) to show their charity by bringing at least one can of food or item listed above to church every week. Please NO outdated food! Saturday cleaners Each Saturday, starting at 8:00am, a group of men and women gather to clean our church. It is a wonderful way to meet people, keep the Lord s House clean as well as get those volunteer hours completed for Confirmation. Come join Father ST and our group as we are dedicated to keeping true the cliché: Cleanliness is next to Godliness! Men and women of all ages are welcome. There is no heavy lifting, just need to bring some elbow grease! ADULT CHOIR The Adult Choir which sings at the 11:30am Mass will resume rehearsals on Thursdays from 7:30-9:00pm in the church. The choir welcomes new members who enjoy singing and would like to share their God-given voice. Please contact music director Kelly Dachisen at for more information. Scout Sunday Attention all Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts of Saint Joseph Parish. We will celebrate Scout Sunday on September 25 th at the 9:30 Mass. If you are a Scout of any age or a Scout Leader, please join us in uniform to celebrate our Catholic faith and its connections to Scouting. 4 A Sikh is a follower of Sikhism, a monotheistic dharma (a key concept of their faith that believes in one God) which originated during the 15 th century in the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent. The term "Sikh" has its origin in the Sanskrit words (śiṣya; disciple, student) or (śikṣa; instruction). It is a progressive religion founded over 500 years ago. The Sikh religion today has a following of over 20 million people worldwide and is ranked as the worlds 5 th largest religion. Sikhism preaches a message of devotion and remembrance of God at all times, truthful living, equality of mankind and denounces superstitions and blind rituals. Sikhism is open to all through the teachings of its 10 Gurus enshrined in the Sikh Holy Book and Living Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Siks are often mistaken for Muslims because of their headdress, but they are not and many resent this association because they feel their religion is based upon peace and devotion to God without a political agenda. "The Palace of the Lord God is so beautiful. Within it, there are gems, rubies, pearls and flawless diamonds. A fortress of gold surrounds this Source of Nectar. How can I climb up to the Fortress without a ladder? By meditating on the Lord, through the Guru, I am blessed and exalted. The Guru is the Ladder, the Guru is the Boat, and the Guru is the Raft to take me to the Lord's Name. The Guru is the Boat to carry me across the world-ocean; the Guru is the Sacred Shrine of Pilgrimage, the Guru is the Holy River. If it pleases Him, I bathe in the Pool of Truth, and become radiant and pure." (Guru Nanak, Sri Rag, p. 17) The word "Guru" is a Sanskrit word meaning teacher, honored person, religious person or saint. Sikhism though has a very specific definition of the word Guru. It means the descent of divine guidance to mankind provided through ten Enlightened Masters. This honor of being called a Sikh Guru applies only to the ten Gurus who founded the religion starting with Guru Nanak in 1469 and ending with Guru Gobind Singh in 1708; thereafter it refers to the Sikh Holy Scriptures the Guru Granth Sahib. The divine spirit was passed from one Guru to the next as "The light of a lamp which lights another does not abate. Similarly a spiritual leader and his disciple become equal, Nanak says the truth." What is a Sikh? "They distinguish and separate one Guru from the other. And rare is the one who knows that they, indeed, were one. They who realized this in their hearts, attained Realisation of God." (Guru Gobind Singh, Dohira, Vachitra Natak) Sikhism rejects any form of idol worship including worship of pictures of the Gurus. Although some of the Gurus did pose for paintings, unfortunately none of these historical paintings have survived. Artists renditions are for inspirational purposes only and should not be regarded as objects of worship themselves. Religious Philosophy: There is only one God, He is the Creator, Sustainer and Destroyer. "You are the Creator, O Lord, the Unknowable. You created the Universe of diverse kinds, colors and qualities. You know your own Creation. All this is your Play." (Guru Nanak, Var Majh) "The Formless Supreme Being abides in the Realm of Eternity. Over His creation He casts His glance of grace. In that Realm are contained all the continents and the universes, Exceeding in number all count. Of creation worlds upon worlds abide therein; All obedient to His will; He watches over them in bliss, And has each constantly in mind." (Guru Nanak, Japji) God cannot take human form. "He neither has father, nor mother, nor sons nor brothers." (Guru Nanak, Maru) "Burnt be the mouth that asserts, the Lord takes birth. He is neither born nor dies; neither enters birth nor departs. All pervasive is Nanaks Lord." (Guru Arjan Dev, Raga Bhairon) The goal of human life is to break the cycle of births and deaths and merge with God. This can be accomplished by following the teachings of the Guru, meditation on the Holy Name and performance of acts of service and charity. Without devotion to the Name Divine is birth in the world gone waste. Such consume poison, poisonous their utterance; Without devotion to the Name, without gain they die, and after death in transmigration wander." (Guru Nanak, Raga Bhairon) "True life is life in God, contemplation on the Name and the society of the saints" (Guru Arjan Dev, Dhanasari) "I shall merge in the Lord like the water in the sea and the wave in the stream. The soul will merge in God and like air I shall look upon all alike. Then why shall I come again? The coming and going is under the Will of the Lord and Realising This Will, I shall merge in the Lord" (Bhagat Kabir, Maru) "The disciple of the True Guru (God) dwells upon the Lord through the teaching of the Guru and all his sins are washed away" (Guru Ram Das, Var Gauri) "Our service in the world gets us a seat in the Court of the Lord" (Guru Nanak, Sri Rag) "One known as disciple of the holy Perceptor must, rising at dawn, on the Name Divine meditate" (Guru Ram Das, Raga Gauri)

Welcome to team Positive It is with great joy that we welcome Mrs. Linda Gorski as the new Director of Faith Formation for Confirmation. Linda will take over from the many years of hard work and dedication of Sarah Samanns. Linda is a Master Catechist with many years of experience in the field of Faith Formation. We welcome Linda (and her husband John) as part of Team Positive here at Saint Joseph Church. We look forward to working with Linda as we help prepare our youth for Confirmation. Eucharistic ministers A training and a refresher course will be held on Thursday, October 13 at 7:00pm in the church. This is for ALL present Eucharistic ministers (who distribute Holy Communion in church, bring Him to homes, hospitals or nursing facilities) as well as new comers. If you are not able to make this meeting, please call the Parish Center at your earliest convenience. This meeting will be required for all Eucharistic Ministers to continue in their ministry. Thank you! Readers The training and refresher course for new and seasoned Readers will be held on Thursday, October 20 th at 7:00pm in the Church. If you are not able to make this mandatory meeting, please call the Parish Center at your earliest convenience. This meeting is also a requirement for ALL Readers to continue in their ministry.
