Saint Joseph Church supports the poor each and every day through our food pantry and many other ways! PARTNERS IN FAITH We are happy to report that our parish recently received a check from our Diocese for $29, This represents the third rebate returned to us as part of the Partners in Faith campaign. With these funds we completed the sidewalks and pathway from Elm Street to Halsted Street. These parish funds are only available because of those parishioners continue to make their ongoing pledges on their Partners in Faith contribution. We are so grateful to all who are consistent in paying their pledge, and ask any who may have fallen behind to re-commit to their pledge if possible. It is important to the work of the Diocese and to our parish. May God bless you for your continued generosity! 4 Preparing for holy week continued... The Paschal Mysteries are an event which takes places in the Church during the Easter Season. They are spread out over a week; beginning with Palm Sunday continuing through Holy (Maundy) Thursday, Good Friday and reach their climax in the great Paschal Vigil on Holy Saturday night. The Vigil is special and is the most important of all the mysteries, because everything leads to this evening, everything finds its fulfillment on this most holy night. The Paschal Mysteries must be an event and not just in a vague way, but very specifically for us; for our souls, our minds and our hearts. For as we pray during the Mass it is Through Him, with Him and in Him that these things are to be done, so that we allow Christ to work through us in order to bring about a further stage in His plan for our salvation. Therefore, your participation in these mysteries is part of God s plan for you. It is not sufficient that these Paschal Mysteries just be celebrated, they have to be celebrate by and with you in order for you to obtain their full effects. They are the means in which Christ is able to pour His life into yours and share with you the spiritual riches which He won for you by His passion, death and resurrection. If you do not come to these liturgical celebrations then you will miss out on the opportunities of grace that God has in store for you. In order for you to understand Holy Week a little more, I will explain each of the liturgical celebrations for your prayerful consideration. Palm Sunday: The official name of this celebration is Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion. We open Holy Week by celebrating not only the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem but also the purpose for which He came into the world: to suffer, die and to rise again on the third day. The procession from Bethany was for many the arrival of a king for his coronation and enthronement. However, this king would only receive a crown of thorns and His throne would be the Cross. Although the Apostles and Disciples who were there did not know this truth, it is nonetheless the truth which the Church wishes to impress upon us by the opening ceremony of Holy Week. The Palm Sunday celebration helps us understand that this is the day on which we are publicly to show our loyalty to Christ our triumphant King as He goes to do battle for our sakes. We are invited to join Him in spirit through His bitter passion and death and as it were to cheer Him on His way. The procession begins with an invitation which is a clear reminder of its purpose: Dear brothers and sisters, like the crowds who acclaimed Jesus in Jerusalem, let us go forth in peace. This procession takes us (in spirit) back to the past, yet is more than just a memory, for in our procession we actually accompanying Christ here and now in three ways; 1.) Symbolically in the cross which leads the procession, 2.) In the priest who acts in persona Christi (in the person of Christ) and 3.) In the community which is gathered together in Christ s name, who promised to be with us each and every time we gather (Matthew 18:20). But this procession also looks toward the future. Christ passed from this world into heaven which is called the New Jerusalem. If our Church represents the earthly Jerusalem of old, it stands also for the New Jerusalem of heaven. When Christ comes again at the end of time, He will lead our risen bodies, now joined to their souls in heaven. So as we enter with the priest, who is Christ s representative, we should think of the day when we hope to enter heaven itself with Christ our King. Our procession is like a symbolic rehearsal of our final Passover on the Last Day. From the procession we make our way to the altar where we listen to the Word of God from the Holy Scriptures from the Old (Isaiah 50:4-7) and New Testament (Philippians 2:6-11) with the Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 22) in between and finally we read from the Passion of Saint Luke (22:14-23:56) this year. From the past we turn to the present as we celebrate the Holy Eucharist, where upon the altar of our parish church, Calvary is made mystically present. It is the perfect conclusion to our prayerful listening and enacting the Passion of the Lord. At the end of the Mass, we take our palms home and place them behind our crucifixes which serve as a reminder that they were officially blessed by the Church, not that they are magical instruments or superstitious charms that possess special power, but they are more accurately visible signs of the powerful prayer of God s Church which calls down the blessing of God to sanctify and protect those who make use of them devoutly.

5 Columbiettes The Don Bosco Columbiettes Auxiliary No is having a pizza fundraiser at the Villa Capri Restaurant in the Plaza on Rt. 206 in Newton on Friday, March 25 th. Please help the Columbiettes raise money for scholarships and local charities. Villa Capri will donate $1 for every pizza sold on the 25 th. So, please come and treat your family to some really great pizza and help raise money for charity! KN IGHTS OF COLUMBUS Thanks to all the people who donated diapers this past weekend. Based on his talks at Saint Patrick Cathedral on Good Friday 2015, this is a series of meditations on the seven last sayings of Jesus from the cross, which reveal not only Jesus love and forgiveness, but also why we can confidently turn to Him with our worries, fears, and even doubts.
