If everyone gave just $3 more each week, we would meet our goal! Super 50/50 Each year, Saint Joseph Church has a Super 50/50 Raffle in which only 200 tickets are sold ($100/each). You may purchase one by yourself or go in with others. Please see Rose Mistler as you enter or leave church for more details (or you may purchase them at the Parish Center). The final prizes are: 1st prize=80% of 1/2 the total amount collected. 2nd-5th prizes are 5% of 1/2 the money collected. Remember that all proceeds are to benefit our Faith Formation Programs here at Saint Joseph Church. Our goal this year is to sell ALL 200 tickets. If you have friends or family that would like to support your parish, do not be afraid to invite them to join you for a chance to win. Thank you for your support and generosity! LEGION OF MARY May 13, 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the Apparition of Fatima in Portugal. Our Lady of the Rosary asked us to pray for peace, for conversion and penance to save souls. You are invited to pray the rosary with the Legion of Mary in church each Thursday following the 12:05pm Mass beginning in October. Food pantry As you know, each and every week, Father ST has asked EVERYONE to bring (at least) one can of food to church as part of our Christian outreach to our local community. Saint Mother Theresa Food Pantry is in need of mayonnaise, cooking oil, detergent for clothes, bleach, dish detergent, pasta sauce (either red or white), Knorr pasta sides, Spam, Dinty Moore Stew, fruit cups, crackers, cookies snacks, cereal, sugar, bread crumbs, shelf life milk, Hamburger Helper, chili, toilet paper, tissues, paper towels, shampoo and conditioner, bottled juice, rice or baby wipes? It seems that is what many people have been requesting. Thank you for your generosity!! Covered dish supper Our annual covered dish supper will be Friday, October 28th at 6:30pm in the Community Center. All are invited and welcome. This year we will have a Halloween theme for the young and young at heart. Bring your favorite dish and renew old friendships and make new ones! You don t have to have a 50/50 ticket to join us. The parish will supply coffee, tea, juice, rolls and butter. Please call Anne Savacool by October 24th and let her know what you will be bringing to dinner! Anniversary mass Were you married between 1966 or 1991? Then you are graciously invited to celebrate your 25th or 50th Wedding Anniversary with the Church of Paterson. Bishop Serratelli will be the main celebrant at Mass at Saint Peter the Apostle Church, Parsippany on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 4:00pm. Arrangements can be made by contacting the Parish Center. Registrations will be accepted through Monday, October 24, Information will be sent from the Office of Family Life once your registration has been processed. 4 A tribute to Rosemary Rosie Woodring When I arrived here in Newton over fourteen months ago, one of the very first parishioners that I met was Rosie Woodring. She was one of those people that when you met her, you were instantly friends. She told me how glad she was to welcome me to Saint Joseph and how much she still loved Father Brian. As weeks went by, we shared our life s stories and she said to me You know Father, you are the first priest that I have ever had a crush on. Then she said Father I have chemo brain and I do not care what I say so I have to tell you, I love the angels. I prayed to the Lord that He would send me a sign that I would be able to endure the chemotherapy and you showed up with 12 angels!! You were the answer to my prayers but I still love Father Brian. As time went on, Rosie became the vice-president of my fan club. But in reality, Rosie was so much more than just that; she was kind, gentle, generous, funny, while at the same time serious about her faith and committed to her familiar relationships that extended beyond her immediate family to the Migrant Ministry, the Food Pantry, the Columbiettes and the entire parish family of Saint Joseph Church. She and her husband Jerry also delivered bread to the poor on a weekly basis. Rose truly embodied our motto All Are Welcome by her gentle and loving ways and generous and loving heart. The reason why I have decided to write about Rosie is to give each of us a practical example of what a well lived faith life looks like. Rosie was hardly perfect (you only had to ask her) and yet that did not keep her from being the best person she could be to so many people on so many levels. I have very dear friends that come from Wallington and East Rutherford several times a month and my dear friend Carole was recently diagnosed with cancer. When I introduced her to this couple, again, they were instantly friends. I spoke with Michael the other day and told him that Rosie has died and he said: She was an inspiration and very brave! This is how far Rosie s inspiration, kindness, love and affection reached through the state of New Jersey. I know that there are thousands of stories that many people would tell about her kindness, gentleness, generosity that only that person, the Lord and Rosie know about. This was her way, unassuming, quiet (well most of the time) and ALWAYS positive about life even in the midst of dealing with such a horrific disease. At the end of her life, cancer did not have the final say, for I know and believe that Rose truly believed in the words from Sacred Scripture: Chastised a little, they shall be greatly blessed because God tried them and found them worthy of Himself. As gold in the furnace, He proved them and as sacrificial offerings He took them to Himself. In the time of their visitation they shall shine and shall dart about as sparks through stubble. (Wisdom 3: 5-7) So as we continue to mourn the loss of such a great woman and faithful member of this parish, I ask you to please remember Jerry and his children in your prayers as they continue to mourn the loss of their wife, their mother, their Grandmother, their aunt and their friend. Rosie there will always be an empty seat in the church which has your name on it and having been honored to be at your bedside and offer you the Church s Sacrament and Pontifical Blessing from Pope Francis, I am more than sure that you are now in the heavenly kingdom with all the saints and ANGELS in heaven. Thank you for sharing your faith with me, thank you for sharing your love, thank you for sharing your gift of Rosie. I will always cherish my Angels Gather Here sign that you gave to me and ask you now to continue to watch over Jerry, your family, me and your parish family of Saint Joseph here in Newton. May the angels lead you into paradise, may the martyrs come to welcome you and take you to the holy city the new and eternal Jerusalem. Where Lazarus is poor no longer, may you find eternal peace. 5 Respect Life ministry Are you someone who is committed to our local church, active parishioner and who has a prayerful and energetic respect for all life? Thrift shop Our Thrift Shop (located under the church) is having a 1/2 price sale on all household items, books, curtains, linens, and knick-knacks. The shop also sells clothing, jewelry, frames, specialty items and puzzles. Shop hours are Thursdays and Fridays 10:00am to 4:00pm and Saturdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm. All Are Welcome! FRANCISCAN SECULARS The Order of Franciscan Seculars are men and women of all ages and walks of life, who strive to follow the Gospel more intensely and develop a deeper relationship with Christ in the spirit of Saint Francis of Assisi. The challenge of a Secular Franciscan vocation and the grace, love and joy that we experience and share are beyond awesome. We will be again going with Catholic Heart WorkCamp (CHWC) next year heading to Plattsburg, NY where many underprivileged people need our assistance.
