New mass schedule We are thinking about adding an additional Mass to our schedule due to overcrowding at the 9:30am and 11:30am Masses. The new Mass schedule would be: 7:30, 9:00, 10:30am and 12:00noon. Thoughts? 3 SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH S TOWN HALL MEETING II During the meeting, everyone was invited to raise their hand, be recognized, approach the microphone and state their name and amount of time they have been a member of the parish. The following people were recognized and these were their thoughts: Patty H. (6 months); recently joined Saint Joseph Church because we fit her theological and spiritual needs. Our community captured her and she was sold. Our parish was very welcoming and she loves the fact that there are a lot of children and it is a complete community. Marisol K. (18 years); a social worker for the Archdiocese of Newark; she addressed the issue of the youth and willing to work with outreach to them. She also is a grant writer. She also shared about ALICE (Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed) and how many households are struggling in our county. Chris C. (53 years); she recalled how in the past the youth went on mission trips, had a building with pool tables, etc. She suggested that we need to start with the youngest before they get to high school. John S. (12 years); he wanted to know why the Knights of Columbus were not as active as they were in his former parish. Maybe I do not see or do not have exposure to them. He was curious as to what they were doing with the money they raise. Vicky B. (37 years); spoke about the Columbiettes and explained how they have done a lot together for the community and have also had many fundraisers (e.g. Murder Mystery Dinner) for the parish. Doug M. (40 years); the Financial Secretary for the Knights of Columbus; explained how many different areas they support in our parish and other parishes that are included in their council. He admitted that it is a mature group of men. Florence C. (54 years); she shared how she was very involved in the past with camping with youth, guitar Masses, a bell choir. She suggested that the parish should have a room for the youth to gather because there is nothing for them to do. Anne S. (46 years); she shared that as a community we need to get other people to participate. Everyone should just come and it will grow. The same people come to everything. She gave great examples that the parish offers like the Healing Mass, the covered dish meal, the Saint Patrick Breakfast, the Mass of Remembrance, look at the bulletin and just come! Kelly F. (17 years); said she has shopped around for other parishes and even though we have a parking issue here at Saint Joseph Church and I am happy to be back! Linda F. (42 years); In our weakness is our strength. She also mentioned about the Mass of Remembrance. She also mentioned that we should consider additional Masses, Liturgy of the Word with Children and work with the 9:30am Mass. Pat Q. (66 years); he shared how he an important issue the teens and young adults are for our parish. I do not know what should be done. Charlie S. (10 years); agreed with Pat Q. and he too does not have a clue. This is a great challenge for us; we should seek out where it works. The youth have to want to come; music is also important to this generation. He used the example of Joel Osteen. Dorothy B. (60 years); people between the ages of do not even take their children to church. Sometimes we have to go away in order to come back. John G. (25 years); bringing people to the community is so challenging because children are so busy. He suggested an alternative to Faith Formation using a Family Program where parents and children are both educated. Kathy R. (45 years); she mentioned her Youth Missions (this year there are 13); she suggested that we need to start young with youth groups; we have to keep our Catholic faith more enjoyable. She mentioned that music kept her involved. She is going to do research how it works in other faith communities. The following were some s which we received before the meeting: Rosemary D. asked about having a Parish Mission, Stations of the Cross on Fridays and about celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday. Joan H. asked about celebrating the 100 th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima on the First Saturday of each month between June and October, praying the rosary after these Masses and possibly a trip to a local shrine. I also received two cards which praised the work of the parish priest and how proud they were to be part of Saint Joseph Catholic Community where All Are Welcome. Someone also asked when Father ST was going to be appointed pastor. The final note asked about possibly having Faith Formation on Sundays. In the end, there were many positive stories shared, many good ideas and some old ones, but at least we are igniting the thought process of making our parish more welcoming and outreaching to the youth and young adult communities that seem to be lost between the cracks. I mentioned that these particular issues are not something specific to Saint Joseph Church but something that all churches (both Catholic and not) are experiencing in the 21 st Century. We continue to dialogue, brainstorm, pray and hope in God that He will guide us to a place where we can continue to offer our hospitality, our love and our acceptance to all people; those in the pews and those who choose to stay in their homes on the weekends. Thank you one and all for participating and for those who ed me suggestions about our parish community. Let us continue to pray for our Universal Church and our local church here in Newton, that the Holy Spirit will continue to fill the hearts of our faithful to be united with the Son and the Father as we gather in faith, hope and love.

This is a wonderful example of our alms giving and outreach to those in need. Please no more pasta or string beans. Palm cross fundraiser To benefit the Little Sisters of the Poor Saint Joseph Home for the Elderly This fresh Palm Cross is handmade with 10 fan sets of 6 Palm loops, 2 plastic lilies and a bow. The bottom of the wooden lath is cut at an angle for easy ground insertion. All crosses are individually wrapped in a clear poly bag. Bishop s annual appeal I want to update you about our parish s goal for the 2016 Bishop s Annual Appeal. To date $27, has been pledged on our $28, goal. I believe that our goal is attainable and so I am asking for your help. If you have not yet done so, please make a pledge so we can reach our goal and help thousand of people in need throughout our Diocese. Not one person can do everything, but I am confident that everyone can do something. Whatever you are able to do to help is a great blessing. Please know, too, that 50% of all cash received over our parish goal is returned to us for our own parish needs. Partners in faith campaign Our parish goal for the Partners in Faith Campaign was $455, To date parishioners have donated $440, The parish receives 25% of all donations up to the parish goal and 60% of additional donations. 5 Lenten ACTIVITIES STATIONS OF THE CROSS SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME Remember to set your clocks ahead 1 hour when you go to bed Saturday, March 11 th. Our Lenten journey Days of Abstinence: No meat may be eaten on Ash Wednesday, all Fridays in Lent and Good Friday (for all those who are 14 years or older). Days of Fast: A limit of one full meatless meal on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday (for all who are years old). Weekdays of Lent: There is no obligation to fast, however, voluntary acts of self-denial are always a great way to be more involved during Lent. Easter Duty Obligation: Every Catholic must receive Holy Communion and go to confession between the First Sunday in Lent and Trinity Sunday. Acts of Devotion: are encouraged on a voluntary basis. These may include spiritual study, Lenten Devotions, the Rosary, Stations of the Cross and deeds of mercy and kindness. Of course, the greatest prayer and to receive the greatest fruits of the Lenten season is by our participating in daily and Sunday Masses. Eucharistic Fast: You should fast one hour from foods and liquids. (Water and medicine are exceptions to this fast).
