Spiritual book club We will meet on Tuesday, August 16 th at 7:00pm in the Community Center to discuss William Paul Young s book. Baseball at skylands park Saint Joseph Church s Family Night will be at Skylands Park with the Sussex County Miners on Saturday, August 27 th at 7:05pm. Reserved Field Level Seating is $11.50/person. Food pantry Father ST has asked that every person (children & adults) to bring at least one can of food to church every week. The pantry is still in need of: Coffee, Mayonnaise, cooking oil, milk, powdered milk, cookies, hair shampoo and conditioner, kids tooth paste, mixed vegetables, carrots, feminine products, detergent, bleach, dish detergent, paper towels and toilet paper. We also ask that it not be outdated! CATECHISTS & VOLUNTEERS Share your love of Jesus with the youth of our parish. If you are interested in teaching 6 th or 8 th grade Faith Formation, please call or Deb Henegan at FaithFormation@stjosephnewton.org. Hospice volunteer If you would like to become a Hospice Volunteer, there will be 8 consecutive classes on Wednesday and Friday mornings 10:00am to 12:00 noon. Classes will be September 7 th, 9 th, 14 th, 16 th, 21 st, 23 rd, 28 th and Graduation September 30 th. Classes will be held at the Joseph T. Quinlan Bereavement Center, 61 Spring Street (1 st floor) Newton. The Hospice Volunteer Training Course is Free-of-Charge. Upon completion, participants are Certified Hospice Volunteers. 4 Missionary trip This past June 26 th to July 1 st, Saint Joseph Church sponsored a Mission Trip to North Carolina under the leadership of Mrs. Cathy Roy and several other adults. This was the fifth year that Cathy headed up this event and took parishioners on a missionary trip; the first year they went to Laurel, MD, the second to Oil City, PA, the third Boston, MA, the fourth to Richmond, VA and this past year being the fifth, to Charlotte, NC. They were part of an organization called Catholic Heart Work Camp which assists individuals and families that are vetted by the local municipalities to assure their neediness. Each day included Mass, meals and group meetings in addition to the daily work schedule from 8:00am-3:00pm where the students and chaperone s provided the necessary help by means of painting, construction, etc. Over 300 youth from all over participate in this event where Eucharistic Adoration is provided as well as sharing during the evenings and uplifting Christian music (performed by the youth). This is just one of the great ministries that Saint Joseph Church provides for those in need, not only in our own parish community, but throughout the United States. We congratulate our youth for taking the initiative in going to North Carolina as a very tangible way of expressing their faith to those in need. We also congratulate those brave adults who took on the great responsibility of being chaperone s and guides. Saint Joseph parish family is very proud of your hard work and dedication. Saint Joseph Church sponsored the three (3) vans that they used to drive to North Carolina while each student and chaperone paid for their own fees for the food, leadership and supplies that were provided by CHWC. God bless you all! Truth of Islam cont. Over the past few weeks I have continued my articles on the Truth of Islam and a few (very few) people have objected to my use of people that I have quoted saying that they have lied about this or that in the past. I have been accused of giving only one side of the story and it has come from a very ultra conservative and non-loving approach. Let me set the record straight for once and all: my intention is to educate my parishioners. Whether the Caner brothers have problems with their claims of being practicing Muslims or if Mr. Glen Beck is a right-wing, ultra-conservative that has an axe to grind or not, does not take away from their scholarly work. Finally, I have also used the Quran itself to explain the meaning and justification for violence and hatred against others. Again, my sole intention is to present information that is straight forward and lacks the political niceties that have been imposed upon us by our media and most unfortunately by the President of the United States. Although not the first person to say such a thing, when such comments as: Islam is a religion that preaches peace comes directly from the mouth of the President of the United States of America, most people will just believe it as true. Just as nowadays most people believe that if it is on the internet, it has to be true. Unfortunately, for decades we have been told that Islam is a religion of peace as I said, starting with the President, to would-be theologians that happen to be movie stars or musicians to even the pope. Why are people so afraid to speak the truth? Because it would offend some people? Because it is not the politically correct thing to do or say? I was often taught as a child that The Truth will set you free (John 8:32). Why are we so afraid to speak the truth? Even the word Islam which many want to translate as peace is etymologically incorrect! The more accurate translation is to surrender. Rather than take my own research, why not listen to the words of Anjem Choudary, the co-founder of the terrorist group Al-Muhajiroun: Contrary to popular misconception, Islam does not mean peace but rather means submission to the commands of Allah alone. Therefore, Muslims do not believe in the concept of freedom of expression, as their speech and actions are determined by divine revelation and not based on people s desires (This quote was taken from an article which justified the al-qaida attack on the magazine Charlie Hebdo where 12 journalists were killed and one Paris police officer)....more truth to come...

On Saturday, July 2, 2016, Deacon Thomas Zayac baptized Rylee Anne Reed, child of Justin and Megan Reed. We welcome the newest members to God s family and to our parish community as we offer our congratulations to the parents and Godparents. Parish council At the recent meeting of our Parish Council, Joe Ryan was elected chair of the Council. Congratulations Joe and thank you for being willing to step up and do this job. In addition James Finan has agreed to be secretary for the council. Thank you James for being willing to help in this important way.
