If everyone gave just $3 more each week, we would meet our goal! 2016 bishop s annual appeal As you consider your pledge to the 2016 Bishop s Annual Appeal, it is important to know that the Partners in Faith campaign conducted in 2013 and the Bishop s Annual Appeal are different campaigns serving different needs. The Partners in Faith campaign raised funds for ministries outside the Diocese s general operating funds and included some endowments with an eye toward future needs. The Bishop s Annual Appeal, on the other hand, helps fund immediate, day-to-day operations of four important ministries and programs: Catholic Charities, seminarian education, our diocesan priests retirement residence and our inner-city schools. Thank you for your continued generosity. Scout Sunday Attention all Girls Scouts and Boy Scouts of Saint Joseph Parish. We will celebrate Scout Sunday on September 25 th at the 9:30am Mass. If you are a Scout of any age or a Scout Leader, please join us in uniform to celebrate our Catholic faith and its connections to Scouting. 4 Thought you might like to know this! This past Monday I attended the monthly Deanery Meeting at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Sparta where the gracious Dean, Father David McDonnell hosted the local priests of our deanery. During this meeting, the Knights of Columbus (Don Bosco Council #7784) were invited to share with us their Free to Speak Program that comes from the Catholics for Freedom of Religion. I found seven (7) essential points worth reprinting in our weekly bulletin for all parents who have children in either parochial or even public schools. The following comes from the United States Department of Education about public schools students and teachers civil liberties: 1.) You can pray, read your Bible or other religious material and talk about your faith at school. 2.) You can organize prayer groups and religious clubs and announce your meetings. 3.) You can express your faith in your class work and homework. 4.) Your teachers can organize prayer groups with other teachers. 5.) You may be able to go off campus to have religious studies during school hours. 6.) You can express your faith at a school event. 7.) You can express your faith at your graduation ceremony. You may be as surprised as I was to know that this the law of the United States. You may find more information by visiting their website at: more on students rights at: or about Alliance Defending Freedom at: So the next time that you are told that it is against the separation of church and state that people cannot sing Christmas hymns in school, that you cannot pray to Jesus during graduation, now you have all the information you need to properly educate those who wish to take away our civil liberties guaranteed by our laws of the United States of America. As many of you know I am the Catholic Police Chaplain for several police departments. During a ceremony in one of these cities a few years ago, I prayed for the blessing of a new park and at the end of the prayer I ended with Whatever faith you are, whatever God you believe in, let us remember the words of Jesus who said with God all things are possible for we make all these prayers in the name of Him who came to serve rather than to be served, Christ Jesus our Lord. At the end of the ceremony a young woman came up to me and said Are you a Catholic priest? I answered, Yes, I am. She continued Well, I am not Catholic and I am offended by your prayers in the name of Jesus since I am not a Christian. I took a deep breath, counted to 10 and answered her Well my dear, I am the Catholic Chaplain of the Police Department and according to our Catholic faith we pray the Holy Name of Jesus Christ our Savior. I am sorry that you are offended by this prayer but I will not give up my faith to assuage your feelings. I am not going to pray (as many chaplains do) in the name of God our Creator or Loving God. I am a Catholic and a Catholic priest and while I respect other s religious denominations (or lack thereof), I would ask them to please respect mine. It is high time that we stop making excuses for our faith. For it was Jesus Himself who said: But whoever denies me before others, I will also deny before my Father in heaven (Matthew 10:33). I am sorry that she was offended, but I am not going to lose my eternal salvation over denying my faith in Jesus to placate her religious sensitivity. Are you in a family, relationship, workplace or school and have been silenced because of your beliefs? Well now you know your rights when it comes to your children and school (whether public or private).

He is looking for someone who is committed to our local church, active parishioners and someone who has a prayerful and energetic respect for all life and would be willing to head up this ministry. The National Life Chain will take place on Respect Life Sunday, October 2 nd from 2:00-3:330pm at the Newton Green on the corner of High and Spring Streets. Come join with other groups around the county in a prayerful witness to life. Signs will be provided. You may bring a chair if you feel it is necessary. We Can do this! REMINDER: Each and every parishioner is asked to please bring just one can of food to church every week. This is a great sign and symbol of our Christian Catholic faith as we feed those who are less fortunate than we. Many, many thanks to those who go above and beyond the call of duty each week and bring bags of food and special needs products. Your generosity does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
