1 St. Mary, Mother of God Catholic Church Archdiocesan Musicians Needed From time to time throughout the year, the Archbishop and the various offices and departments here at the Chancery sponsor special es, liturgies and other events, which call for the assistance of good musicians. Since we do not possess the musical resources of a regular parish, we often find ourselves on these occasions reaching out for help. I seek to develop a roster of musicians and musical groups from throughout the archdiocese who might lend their talents for these es and other events for the glory of God and to help Archbishop Gregory and those who help him on these special occasions. If you are interested in being involved with this special ministry, a Corps of Archdiocesan Musicians, please Hurricane Matthew Disaster Relief Response When a natural disaster occurs in the United States, electronic donations may be made and parish collections may be directed to Catholic Charities USA. They and their member agencies respond to immediate emergency needs for such necessities as water, food, shelter and medical care, as well as to the long-term need to rebuild and recover after widespread destruction. They also assist the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops with pastoral and reconstruction needs of the Church. 3 Membership and Registration Welcome to St. Mary, Mother of God, Church! We would be delighted to have you join our Parish Family. Please complete a registration form available in the Parish Hall in the Armoire, or on the clipboard by the door. Please do not assume that you are registered in the parish because you attend here, or because you were registered as a child with your parents. When you become an adult, you should register under your own name. If someone wants to make wedding plans, have a baby baptized, or act as a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation, we must have a record of your membership and attendance. Please take a moment to register. If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm. Thank you. SACRAMENTAL GUIDELINES St. Mary, Mother of God Catholic Church Prayer Support Please Pray for the healing of: Bob Abood, Kathy Dahlin, Debbie Dahlin. The following parishes provide the Catholic chaplains for these hospitals: Sylvan Grove Hospital - St. Mary, Mother of God, Jackson Spalding Regional Hospital - Sacred Heart, Griffin Henry Medical Center - St. James, the Apostle, McDonough Southern Regional Hospital - St. Philip Benizi, Jonesboro Piedmont Hospital - Christ the King Cathedral, Atlanta Crawford Long Hospital - Sacred Heart, Atlanta Emory Hospital - St. Thomas More, Decatur Piedmont Newton Hospital - St. Augustine s, Covington If someone in your family is admitted to one of these hospitals, the parish responsible for that hospital should be notified as well as notifying St. Mary, Mother of God, Church. They will have people serving that hospital on a regular basis and are closest in an emergency situation. Baptism- In order to have a child baptized in this parish: (a) at least one parent must be a practicing Catholic and a registered member of this parish for at least 3 months, and (b) the parents must take the Baptism Class unless they have taken the class within the last 3 years. First Holy Communion In order to receive First Holy Communion, a child must: (a) be at least 7 years old and a registered member of this parish, (b) be able to demonstrate sufficient understanding of the sacrament, and (c) have been in the Faith Formation program for at least one year prior to the taking the First Holy Communion program. Confirmation-- In order to be Confirmed, a youth must (a) be a baptized and practicing Catholic, (b) a registered member of this parish, (c) at least 15 years old or a sophomore in high school, and (d) have been in the Faith Formation program for at least 2 years immediately prior to the Confirmation program. ( Adults and those in OCIA follow different guidelines.) Marriage A couple wishing to be married at St. Mary, Mother of God must fulfill these requirements: (a) at least one of them must be a practicing Catholic and registered in this parish ( a former member of the parish or others must have a letter of permission from their current pastor authorizing them to marry outside of that parish); (b) they must have indicated to the priest or deacon of this parish their desire to be married here at least 6 months prior to the projected date of their marriage; and (c) have completed the required Marriage Preparation program. No arrangements for a reception should be made until the date for the projected marriage has been confirmed by the Parish Office.

4 Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 23, 2016 When he was a bishop in Poland, he was constantly being watched or bugged by the Communists. He was aware of this, and could sneak past the secret police, to visit with the archbishop, undetected. He also managed to feed the information he wanted the Communists to know through their listening devices, which he knew were hidden around his house. (By the time he became pope, they had 18 cartons of information on him.) He received the sacrament of Reconciliation from Padre Pio, and would be the one canonizing him 55 years later. He was the first pope to visit a mosque. What saint is this? He is the one reclining in the center. Drop your name and the saint s name into the red folder on the office door for a prize! T his saint loved the outdoors, enjoying camping, skiing, biking, and boating. He skied into his 70 s. He worked with the youth of his parish in his years as a priest, and even as a Cardinal in Communist Poland. On his camping trips with the youth group, he read C. S. Lewis The Screwtape Letters around the campfire. During the years he was pope, he would sneak out past the Swiss guards. He knew all the bishops by name... Yes, all 2,000+ of them! He had a self-deprecating sense of humor: Saint: Music is extremely helpful for prayer. As St Augustine said, He who sings, prays twice. Friend: Were you a good singer, Holy Father? Saint: When I sang, it was more like I was praying only once. Information from Honor Someone You Love with Flowers Buying flowers for the altar is a wonderful way to remember those who hold a special place in our hearts. The bouquets now contain roses.
