SAVE THE DATE! Blessing of School Bags and School Supplies Saturday and Sunday August 4th and 5th During All Masses Students at any level of education are invited to bring their school bag or 1 item that symbolizes the start of a new school year to any of our Masses on the weekend of August 4-5. Possible items to bring include: school backpack, athletic equipment, textbook. Please make sure that your item is clearly marked with your name and phone number on it in bold letters. During each Mass Father Trey and Father Ryan will offer a special blessing of all items, as well as a blessing of students for the start of the school year. Adults will be available at the entrances of church to assist students in the placing of their items on the steps in the sanctuary (around the altar.) Students will be invited to retrieve their bags and other items after Mass. ANNUAL BACK-TO-SCHOOL SNO-CIAL! Also, students of St. Jude School and their parents are invited to join us on the deck immediately following the 11:30am Mass for our third annual snow cone social to meet teachers, administration, and to have the opportunity to view their class list for the new school year!

2 The Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Saturday and Sunday July 28-29, Below is a reprint of Fr. Trey s blog from August 29, 2017 for your end of the summer reflection When his disciples heard about it (the death of John the Baptist), they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb. (From Mark 6:17-29) There is a slight difference between Mark s account of John s death and that of Matthew. It is this distinction that comes to mind for me now. The lectionary reading from Mark s Gospel ends as you see above. Matthew s, on the other hand, ends with, when Jesus had heard of the death of John the Baptist, he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself. (Matthew 14:13) Jesus was the best example at showing us the need to pull away and be alone with God in silence. In this particular scene from his life, he withdraws in response to the death of someone he loved dearly, his cousin, John. There are other scenes in his life as well when we see Jesus going away to a deserted place. And, no doubt, each and every time that he does this, people go looking for him. Translation? The work will always be there waiting for us. So will the text messages, the s, and God knows whatever else. I wish I could remember the name of the book, but a quote comes to mind for me today. I won t get it exactly right, but it goes something like, there will always be something in your inbox. That s why it s called an inbox The rhythm and balance between work and rest, between busyness and stopping is a hard one to come by, to be sure. And if it takes something tragic to stop us and draw us into the quiet, then that s unfortunate. Jesus took time alone regularly, not just when something bad happened. That s what we are called to also. We need it to survive. Our children need to see us embracing the quiet. There is no better gift for us to accept and no better gift for us to pass on to our children than the value of withdrawing to a deserted place to listen more intently to God s voice. (

3 RCIA A new year of RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is fast approaching! The RCIA process is open to: 1) Those seeking baptism in the Catholic faith; 2) Those who were baptized in another Christian faith and who are interested in converting to Catholicism; 3) Adults already baptized as Catholics but never received the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist or Confirmation. The RCIA process helps them to complete their initiation into the Catholic Church. If you know someone who may be interested in learning about our faith or possibly converting, invite them to inquire. There is no obligation. RCIA sessions will begin in September and are held on Wednesday nights in the Ministry Building. For more information, contact Charmaine Biossat at or charmaineb@stjudecatholic.org St. Jude Children s Ministries Music Makers Ministry Every Wednesday, 10:30-11:30 in the parish hall Open to children 5 and under Join us for an interactive caregiver/child music ministry where children 5 and under can make joyful noise together. Children sing songs using hand puppets and handheld instruments such as sticks, eggs and maracas to develop their coordination. Nursery rhymes and Christian praise songs are enjoyed by child and caregiver. Mothers, grandparents, fathers and babysitters are welcome to participate with your child. Ministry follows the St. Jude School calendar. Play and Pray Ministry Every other Friday 9:30-10:30 in the parish hall Open to children 5 and under Parents or caregivers of pre-school children are invited to join our Play and Pray ministry. The group meets every other week in the parish hall for approximately 1 hour from 9:30-10:30am. The group can also meet at local parks and have field trips to local attractions if desired. The kids get to play together and the parents/caregivers pray for their children and support each other in family fellowship. It is a great way to meet other young mom s while giving your child the opportunity to meet other children in our church parish.
