2 My Dear Parishioners, This weekend is Good Shepherd Sunday. This Sunday is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Today, we celebrate the risen Lord as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. The earliest Christians saw Jesus as the fulfillment of the ancient Jewish dream of a Good Shepherd. In today's first reading, Peter asserts unequivocally before the Jewish assembly that there is no salvation except through Christ, the Good Shepherd. The Gospel text offers us both comfort and challenge. The comforting Good News is that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, knows us, provides for us and loves us. The challenge is for us to become good shepherds to those entrusted to our care and good sheep in our parish, the sheepfold of Jesus the Good Shepherd. On this World Day of Prayer for Vocations we are asked to encourage and pray for our young men to respond to God s call to serve His Church in the ministerial priesthood. Peace! 3 CONGRATULATIONS to Evan and Erika Nichols who was married here at St. Michael s last weekend. LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Here in the United States there is a great need for spreading the Gospel and sharing the message of Christ and the beauty of the Church. The Church at home needs to be strengthened and fortified. Soon, as a diocese, we will take up the Catholic Home Missions Appeal (CHMA), which supports the neediest dioceses in the United States. This appeal makes the most basic faith programs possible and shares the gospel message with our brothers and sisters in dioceses where Church communities are scattered and struggling. An example of such a diocese is the Diocese of Pueblo. There are only 44 priests and 45 deacons available to serve the needs of over 64,000 Catholics. The diocese is primarily rural, covering the entire southern half of the state of Colorado, and the priest shortage is felt very strongly there. But with your support of CHMA, the Diocese of Pueblo offers lay ministry training programs. This training will provide ministers to serve the most isolated parishes and offer spiritual support for Catholics in the diocese. Your support of this appeal makes a difference in the faith lives of our brothers and sisters right here in the United States. Please prayerfully consider how you can support the appeal this year. To learn more about the appeal and those who benefit from it, visit Thank you for strengthening the Church at home. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki Bishop of Springfield in Illinois Note: This special collection will be gathered next weekend during all Sunday Masses immediately following reception of Holy Communion. Thank you for your support. CORPUS CHRISTI is Sunday, June 3rd. Mark your calendars. After the 10:00 A.M. Mass, we will have a short outdoor procession (weather permitting) at St. Michael Church. We need First Communicants from all four parishes (in their 1 st Communion attire). K of C to provide honor guard. CCW presidents to carry their parish banners. Pastoral Council president to carry the canopy. Men s officers from each parish to usher. So mark your calendars so that you are able to participate in the Corpus Christi celebration. More details to come. THANK YOU. We want to thank everyone for all the love and prayers that was shown to us during this stressful time. /s/ the Family of Sara Baker The 2018 St. Michael Church Picnic is just around the corner and the Raffle Committee is already hard at work to make this year's event a memorable one. Whether you've donated for years, or are considering a gift for the first time, the Raffle Committee is interested in hearing from you.
