2 ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA PARISH EFFINGHAM, ILLINOIS Padre s point of view... Lent has begun! May you have a joy filled Lent. Joy comes from knowing that the Resurrection is at hand. At the foot of the cross, Mary was a woman of great sorrow. She saw the anguish in her Son s eyes and witnessed the brutality of the torture. Deep in her holy heart, she knew that Jesus would rise on the Third Day. This Hope creates joy! The next Spiritual Work of Mercy is To Counsel the Doubtful. The best way to counsel is to inspire with Hope. Hope is the anchor of our faith that keeps us stable in the storms of life. Fr. Chris will be in the St. Anthony Church office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He will be in the Sacred Heart Church office on Wednesdays and Fridays. Lenten Regulations 1. ABSTINENCE Everyone 14 years of age and over is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. 2. FAST Everyone 18 years of age and under 59 is required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is permitted. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength may be taken according to each person's needs, but together these two should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids (including milk and fruit juices) are allowed. 3. To disregard completely the law of fast and abstinence is seriously sinful. We will now be offering support meetings in the afternoon as well as evenings. Please see the schedule to the right. Grief Support Meetings Our next meeting will be held on: Tuesday, February 16th at 7pm Tuesday, February 23trd at 2pm In the St Anthony Parish Center Attention... May he enjoy eternal peace and happiness in Heaven. First Sunday of Lent - Into the desert. Off we go to a less than usual place. It will look like our same neighborhood and town. But these 40 Days in the desert of Lent will feel and taste quite different. Or they should. We set off into Lent to practice these three things: praying, fasting, giving. Let us pray at the font to restore our lives to baptismal purity as well as pray for those who will enter that bath this Easter Vigil. Let us fast from rich food and fine drink to focus on those in need and things eternal. Let us give up things (perhaps temporarily), give up bad behaviors (forever!) in order to give our lives over to the dead and risen Christ. 5 Parish School of Religion News The sixth grade PSR students put their faith into action! There is a lot of excitement and energy in the sixth grade PSR classroom this year. The sixteen students who regularly attend benefit from Brian Schuette s many years of experience as a catechist and from Rob Zumbahlen s youthful zeal in the faith. Often tied to the upcoming week s gospel reading, the class is rarely a boring sit-down-and-read-the-book experience. Brian and Rob use creative handson projects and lively question-and-answer sessions to connect the faith directly to the real world the students live in. In the months leading up to Christmas, Brian led the class in a big project designed to engage the students in a real life work of mercy. Beginning in November, letters were sent home and class time was spent preparing to provide a generous gift of food, clothes, and gifts to a local family in need. Students were encouraged to do work to raise the money, and the class met at Wal-Mart in mid-december to purchase the supplies. That was when the project took on a surprising and grace-filled community witness aspect: as they gathered together in a public space to help this family, shoppers came forward with donations on the spot! With even more money than they originally planned for, the sixth grade PSR class was able to provide a very complete and generous Christmas to others, witness to their faith, and build community at the same time! This week in RCIA A couple of sessions ago, Fr. Ron led the class in a walk through of the mass, carefully bringing detailed attention to why we do the things we do in our public worship, called the Mass. To conclude, the class listened to a short, four point presentation (taken from an online Team RCIA newsletter) on Why do the things we do at Mass matter? The following are some excerpts of what they heard. What we do at Mass matters because the way we pray changes the world. When the bread and wine are changed into the Body and Blood of Christ, it s not just the things on the altar that are changed. We are also changed. And when we then go out into the world, as people changed to be more one with Christ and more like Christ, we cause more change to happen in our neighborhoods, our schools, our businesses, and our families. When we celebrate liturgy, there are four general things that get changed. 1. People become less individualistic. Liturgy that follows good ritual principles invites and even requires active participation on the part of those in the room. Liturgy is like a symphony. It requires lots of players who are paying attention even when they are not on. You cannot just sit there, you have to keep time, pay attention to the flow, and come in at the right time without missing a beat. At the moment when it is time to sound your note, the entire symphony depends on you. Liturgy works exactly the same way 2. People will take God off the pedestal. People who try to pray by themselves or who don t pray at all--make stuff up about God. They tend to make God either into a bully or a distant Father who isn t around very much. When people say they don t believe in God, it s usually the God they made up that they don t believe in. God isn t anything we can make up. St. John, and lots of other saints, tells us that God is love. When we are worshipping with others who also love God, we experience first-hand all the many ways that God loves us. And that is life-changing. 3. People will become more enthusiastic. Ever been to a ball game where you are not really engaged with what is going on in the game and then all of sudden everyone stands up and starts cheering? Often we stand up with them, and we may not know why! Good liturgy is like that. You can walk in on a Sunday expecting to be bored, not really caring and you get caught up in the passion. You are changed by the enthusiasm of those around you. 4. People will get justice. The reason Christ becomes present in the liturgy and the reason Christ became present to the world in the first place was to proclaim good news to the poor. The essential message of Christ is that the oppressed will be set free. We hear and rehearse this in the liturgy which changes us into agents for justice, and then go out into the world and live in a way that makes the world a more just place. And we are left with the question: What one thing can we do before next Sunday to make Mass more meaningful? Deacon Joe Divine Mercy Presentation During this Year of Mercy we invite you to come and learn more about the life of St. Faustina- the Apostle of Divine Mercy. During the presentation we will cover the Feast of Divine Mercy, the Image, the Novena, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and the hour of Mercy. For questions please contact Tessie Kabbes at tkabbes@stanthony.com or call at Sunday, March 13th -1:30-3:00 pm St. Anthony High School Room 7:7 (please enter door# #3 by the ball diamond) Lenten Pro-life Prayer (Pray throughout Lent) Father of all mercy, we thank you for this season of grace and light. We know that sin has blinded us. Draw us ever closer to you, in prayer and penance. Since you, O God, are light itself, give all your people a clearer understanding of what is sin, and what is virtue. Grant in particular that we may see, as never before, the profound dignity of every human life, including the vulnerable unborn children. Give us grace to defend our brothers and sisters in the womb by our prayers, our words, and our self-sacrificing actions. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen
