From the Rector's Study... Greetings My Beloved Congregation of St. Paul's in the Pines, As most of you know, I just finished a pilgrimage of the Holy Land! I will be processing my time and experiences for months, if not years to come. Much of it was/is life changing. What I want to do right away is to share with you a significant experience near the beginning of my time in Israel. Let us begin with words from Scripture: A Preaching Tour in Galilee In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, Everyone is searching for you. He answered, Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.(mark 1:35-39 NRSV) These five verses are packed with teaching points that I want to unpack for you. First, Jesus not only has a custom of visiting Synagogues on the Sabbath, but also a custom of rising early in the morning and praying. Sometimes this idea of the habit of Morning Prayer escapes us. It should not escape us, we are Episcopalians. We have a Daily Office of Morning (and other) Prayer services in our Book of Common Prayer. Simon and company searched from him everywhere except where he would be praying. When found, Jesus says, Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. Jesus went to towns around the western side of the Lake of Galilee teaching, preaching and casting out demons. Now that I have been there I know that in our contemporary understanding the body of fresh water mentioned is a freshwater lake, and not a sea. But to the greater point

Then there are areas where Jesus fed the multitudes from meager resources (two fish and five loaves). I was blessed to be invited on a boat ride on the waters of Galilee. On this vessel fifty clergy of varying Christian denominations sat quietly gazing upon the Galilean coast. We saw the travels of Jesus throughout Galilee before he went south to Jerusalem. I share this picture taken by me while on the boat looking west over the shoreline of Jesus ministry. Words cannot express the awe I felt then and even now sharing this with you. To have the words of Scripture come to life in my own being is powerful. Before I started on this journey I prayed to God that I would not go to the Holy Land with any pre-concieved ideas or attitudes; but that I would empty myself and see what the Holy Spirit fills me with. More than anything else, this first part of our journey was It! Thank you, Holy Spirit. This is where Jesus said to Simon Peter, Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do. Amen. John + in this issue...
