ANDREW S CELEBRATING OUR PAST SHAPING OUR FUTURE Volume 27 Number 3 St. Andrew s Episcopal Church, Lake Worth, Florida March 2016 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We are well into the Lenten season and figuratively on our way to Jerusalem and the holiest week of the church year. Looking back, we remember the ashes marking our foreheads as a sign of repentance and mortality. Looking ahead, we contemplate the mysteries of the cross and the empty tomb. Our temptation, unlike that of Jesus time in the wilderness, may be to see the events of Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter as far removed from our own lives. After all, they occurred some two thousand years ago and we live in a very different world today. The events of Jesus life may not speak to what we experience on a daily basis. Be assured, however, that they do speak to a majority of the world s population. Jesus, you will remember was essentially homeless during his few short years as an adult. There are people who have lived in very real wilderness situations or are living there even now. There are many who are being unjustly persecuted and condemned out of fear and prejudice. Crucifixions may not be so prevalent but the cruel use of beheadings is taking its place. The days of the passion of our Lord may seem almost unreal as we go about our daily lives in relative comfort and ease not withstanding the difficulties and travails that many of us face in our families and in our communities. It will do us some good to suspend belief during these days of Lent and place ourselves on the dusty roads of Palestine walking from town to town listening to and watching Jesus as he brings the good news of God s salvation to people who are hungry for his message. The way of the Cross is also called the Way of Tears. All of us have shed tears on our own journeys. Even though we may think that journey was one in which we walked alone the season of Lent and the message of Easter is that we are never alone. God s promise made to us by God and embodied in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesu Christ is that any cross we may have to endure will always bring us to the joy of the empty tomb. Death and darkness never win in the end in God s world. Light and life will always prevail. May the joy of Easter gladden your heart day by day. Watch over thy children, O Lord, as their days increase; bless and guide them wherever they may be. Strengthen them when they stand; comfort them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise them up if they fall; and in their hearts may thy peace which passeth understanding abide all the days of their lives; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. These hour long sessions are a way to enhance anyone s prayer life. Our own Donna Westbrook will lead the workshop. Call Donna at the office for more information (561) VESTRY NEWS Our next meeting is on Tuesday, March 22nd at 7PM. We welcome our three new Vestry members, Margaret Hudson, Michael Hoagland, and Brian McDonnell. A reminder that our financials are posted on the Bulletin Board in the Parish Hall hallway each month. WAY CAFÉ The feeding Program at Calvary United Methodist Church is every Saturday of each month. We need to have 12 volunteers each Saturday at 2:30PM. We are grateful that this program will continue to feed hungry people in our community. Call Joy Bayrouty if you can help ( ). MARCH TAIZE WORSHIP On the third Saturday of March our 6pm service offers the beauty of contemplative Taize music with healing prayers and communion. All are invited and welcome. FRIDA KAHLO LIVES! A music theatre piece to celebrate Women s History Month. The Core Ensemble, piano, cello, and percussion with actress Rosa Rodriquez. Sunday, March 6th at 4PM. This program is free and open to the public. KLEZMER EAST RETURNS A rollicking program of Jewish jazz back by popular demand on Sunday, April 3rd at 4PM. Tickets are $25. Both these programs are part of Arts at St. Andrew s, a fabulous season of arts and entertainment for our parish and our community.

3 St. Andrew s News & Notes Page 3 NEHEMIAH ACTION It is so important that as many of us that can join the thousands gathering at the Palm Beach County Convention Center on Monday, March 14th at 7PM to do justice in our community on the issues of Homelessness, Youth Crime and I.D. s and Deportation. Also please consider investing in our Justice Ministry with an investment of $200 or more. Info on how in Parish Hall. JESUS - LENTEN FILM During Lent we will be showing the 1999 film Jesus starring Jeremy Sisto, Jacqueline Bisset, Debra Messing, Gary Oldman, and Armin Mueller Stahl. This movie uniquely stresses the humanity of Jesus. The last of three parts will be shown on Wednesday March 2nd. We ll start with a potluck at 6:30PM and then watch the film. Please join us. BLOOD DRIVE Our next Blood Drive will take place on Sunday, March 13 from 8am to 1PM. Please give if you can for this life saving endeavor. YOGA CLASSES Yoga classes are now being held on Monday and Wednesday at 6:15 at a new location: Move is at th Avenue North, Suite Check out the website at MEALS ON WHEELS The Meals on Wheels program is growing in the Lake Worth area and more volunteers are needed. The commitment is to deliver meals to homebound seniors one day a week. Call Debbie Emerick at to volunteer or to get further information. YOUTH NEWS Our youth raised over $500 dollars for Way Café on Souper Bowl Sunday. We thank them for demonstrating care for the hungry in our community. Family Game Night will be held on Friday, March 11th at 7PM in the Parish Hall. Acolyte Festival coming next month. Stay tuned for details. INTEGRITY OF PALM BEACH March Meeting Integrity Palm Beach, a parish activity open to all, invites everyone to join us on the second Saturday, of each month at 7:00PM. Integrity-Palm Beach is the first and only chapter of Integrity in Palm Beach County. Throughout its ten years of existence, it has welcomed a number of speakers and guest clergy at monthly meetings. Integrity has also been a consistent presence in the community, inviting all people into the life of St. Andrew s and thereby fulfilling the parish s stated mission: To Share the Love of Christ in Word and Deed with all God s Children. Our next meeting will be on Saturday, March 12th following the 6PM service. Supper and a program with Allan Hendricks of Equality Florida Palm Beach County as our speaker will follow. MURAL PROJECT Our Mural project is under way depicting the scene of Noah s Ark and we want everyone involved. Jill Karlin, local artist and parishioner has designed the mural and is comprised of almost square tiles. You have the opportunity to discover the hidden artist within you. Border tiles at $20 each are available for memorials or blessing dedications. Forms are available in the parish Hall and the office. Times for painting will be posted as well. Dear Parishioners, My family and I appreciate your courtesy and support for the trip to the Holy Land and for the studies at General Theological Seminary. I really enjoyed the trip. It was a great opportunity to explore and meditate on Jesus sites and others. It was very important for personal, ministerial learning to refresh what I had learned in Old Testament and New Testament. Starting the second semester with cold and snow, after that we are doing well. I hope you are all doing well in your journeys. Thank you for your love and support. Robin Pierre

The deadline for notes and/or announcements for the Sunday Bulletin is Wednesday at noon. If it is after noon, you can leave a message on the church telephone, or leave an at saepiscopal@aol.com. The bulletin is printed on Thursday and the wonderful Church Ladies come in and fold and stuff them on Friday mornings. Keep in mind that the request list will begin anew each month. If you want the prayer requests to stay on the list for longer, just indicate that when getting the information to the office. The newsletter deadline for the April newsletter is March 20th. If you know of any events you would like to put in the newsletter or articles of interest, please them to the office. The Altar flower memorial and bequest form is in the Parish Hall.
