3 Our Fall Adult Education Program Our Fall Adult Education Program will have a social justice flavor to it this year. Please consider two opportunities during October & November: Liturgically, October is Creation Season. A movie is being offered on this theme. It s two hours in length, so maybe a viewing after church would not work. If interested, contact David DeSmith and a convenient time will be arranged. Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway, Merchants of Doubt takes audiences on a satirically-comedic yet illuminating ride into the heart of conjuring American spin. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the curtain on a secretive group of highly charismatic, silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change. A Book Study on Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson is planned for November. From one of the most brilliant and influential lawyers of our time comes an unforgettable true story about the redeeming potential of mercy. Bryan Stevenson was a gifted young attorney when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending the poor; the wrongly condemned; and those trapped in the furthest reaches of our criminal justice system, One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man sentenced to die for a notorious murder he didn t commit. The case drew Stevenson into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. We will read the first half of the book and meet on Sunday, November 6 and finish the book and meet on Sunday, November 20. Each session will be held in the Large Skylight Room from 11:45 am to 12:45 am. Contact David DeSmith if you wish to participate. Have you remembered St. David s in your estate planning?
4 ALL THE ACTIVITIES on Saturday, October 1, at K-FEST on Kinnelon Road from 1:00 6:00! St. David s will have a table, participating for the second time. And Many Thanks will be the order of the day following the 10:15 Service on Sunday, October 2, when we bid farewell to Ian and Liana at a reception in their honor. As David said in his to the parish God has truly blessed us with their talents and presence among us. Come and wish them Godspeed. We will miss them! CREATION SEASON will begin on Sunday, October 9, with The Blessing of the Animals during the 10:15 am Service. All worship friendly (or photos in lieu of) pets are welcome, as are stuffed ones. Building Bridges of Hope with the Living Christ Thanks to the Stewardship Commission for their delicious brunch, thanks to David DeSmith and John Simonelli for their thoughtprovoking presentations and especially thanks to all the parishioners who attended the financial commitment program on September 25. Everyone has received their packets the next step is studying the materials and making a decision. Remember the Ingathering is both services on October 16. IN MEMORY ALL SAINTS DAY will be observed on Sunday, November 6. If there is anyone you would like to have included in the necrology, (those who have died since last All Saints Day), please have their names to the office by November 1. Our condolences and prayers are extended to Ellen Temple and her family on the death of her brother, Gene Prince, as the result of an auto accident in Florida.
5 THE READERS CIRCLE BOOK GROUP NOVEMBER 7, 2016 SKYLIGHT ROOM, 7 PM WHEN BREATH BECOMES AIR, by Paul Kalanithi DISCUSSION LEADER: Mary Harbinsky The author was a neurosurgeon, diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. One day he was a doctor treating the dying, and the next he was a patient struggling to live. Confronting his own mortality he has many questions. What makes life worth living in the face of death? What do you do when the future, no longer a ladder toward your goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual present? What does it mean to have a child, to nurture a new life as another fades away? These are some of the questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this memoir which finds hope and beauty in the face of insurmountable odds. St. David s Readers Circle meets once each month, October through June, on the first Monday of the month. Newcomers are welcome to join the Readers Circle at any time. For more information about The Readers Circle please contact Sondra Odian. Reunion Sunday, September 11th Attendance September 2015 September

8 Vestry meeting Highlights September 15, 2016 The Kinnelon Festival (K-Fest) is October 1, 2016 from 1-6. St. David s will have a table and all are encouraged to join Ms Williams and Ms Pappas-Wilhelm in our participation in this community event for the second time. Those who can are encouraged to come spend an hour with the Going Local Team. Rev. DeSmith has actively inculcated Dwelling in the Word into St. David s meeting groups. It has been a part of the Budget and Finance Committee, the Stewardship Commission and the Dream Group. Stewardship Program: 1 A financial stewardship trifold is almost complete for this year s fall commitment program under the title and theme of Building Bridges of Hope. 2 With the resignation of Music Director Ian Witthoeft a spotlight is focused on our St. David s music ministry. Nancy Moody has generously agreed to fill Mr. Witthoeft s role during the services from now until December 31. It is the goal to find a talented replacement before the end of THANKSGIVINGS to Gill Otto and Mary-Esther Arther for their work on updated and distributing the new parish pictorial directory; to Kathy Kent, Marty Stanton and Jennifer Trevisan for serving on the Music Director Search Committee; to Nancy Moody who has graciously agreed to be our Interim Music Director; to members of the Property Committee (Julie Dolci, Herb Grieshaber, Colin Reed, Mike Roehrer, Bruce Watts, Irene Williams) for coordinating with parishioner, to John Fogg and his crew for the terrific job done on repaving our parking lot and driveways. Ms Rudolphi made a motion to approve the August Treasurer s Reports as presented and Ms Trevisan seconded the motion. All voted to approve. Grounds Maintenance: There is a need to: 1 Remove fall s fallen leaves on the entire 7-acre St. David s property; 2 Carefully weed, remove leaves, trim bushes to bring our Memorial Garden to the expected fine and respectful condition; and 3 Remove three or four of the overgrown bushes in front of the stained glass windows. Ms Dolci made a motion that a landscaper s services be solicited for two visit to perform these services at two visits, one in October and one on Clean Up Day, November 12. The motion specifies the funds be taken from the Alice Whitehead bequest for grounds maintenance. Ms Trevisan seconded the motion and all voted to approve. Ms Dolci reported that the Property Committee has a year-end 2016 goal to use the Bishop s Emergency Fund for replacement windows in the Rectory living room. There is poor insulation and structural concerns in these windows. Ms Trevisan made a motion to approve the October calendar as amended. Ms Rudolphi seconded and all voted to approve. The meeting concluded with the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully submitted Julie Dolci, Clerk.
