TICKETS WILL GO ON SALE OCTOBER 1! The cost is $40 for adults and $5 for children (10 and under). BYOB. Soda and water will be provided. You can purchase tickets on Sundays or in the office Monday-Thursday 9:00 a.m. 1:00 p.m. THIS IS OUR MAJOR FUNDRAISER FOR THE YEAR AND WE NEED EVERYONE S SUPPORT! Things that could be auctioned off: items for a basket, a stand-alone item, or a week or weekend stay in your vacation home,. You can also consider donating a service or experience such as a dinner party, a series of desserts or anything else your imagination can conjure up. Gift cards and baskets of cheer are very popular! Put on your thinking cap! There will be a signup sheet in the narthex. All donations must be received no later than October 22! You can bring them to the office from now until October 22. When putting together baskets, please keep the following in mind: Attractive baskets/items bring in the most money. Please provide a description of the items in the basket, the total value, and don t forget to include your name! If you aren t sure how to arrange the basket, just bring the supplies and one of our expert basket makers will put it together for you. If you are donating something that is for pickup or use later, please be sure to include a detailed description and pictures! Make sure the items are first quality, new or an antique. Get creative handmade items are always a plus! * * * * * * Cash, checks, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover will be accepted. * * * * * * Can you donate extra empty baskets; large or medium-sized containers; medium/large bows? 5 THE OUTREACH COMMITTEE thanks all those who contributed backpacks, school supplies and/or donation checks for school supplies for the children of the incarcerated through the diocesan prison ministry program. Special thanks to our sexton, Guy Baskinger, for making sure the ovens were turned on to prepare the main course. 8 Vestry Meeting Highlights Wednesday, August 16, 2017 Doris Snyder led us in Dwelling in The Word based on John 17 Jesus Prays for All Believers followed by a discussion on how to nurture our relationship with God. We noted many positive comments from the congregation on their being kept informed throughout the transition period. It was also noted that the memorial garden has become overgrown and we approved hiring a landscaper to remedy the situation.. We voted to participate again in K-Fest on October 14 th We voted to approve the 2018 financial stewardship letter and tri-fold that will be distributed to the congregation on September 24. Outreach Committee reported that they have continued their investigation of the possibility of hosting a community garden, and that they are attempting to learn more about our outreach neighbors. We offered thanks for Nancy Moody for graciously offering to be interim music director, for Mary Harbinsky for volunteering to be Vestry Clerk, for Christine Rudolphi for all her years of cheerful service, for Mike Roehrer for filling in during the sexton s vacation periods, and for Guy Baskinger for everything he does. We reviewed and approved the July Treasurer s and Quickbooks reports and everything is currently on track. It was noted that the mid-year pledge statements will be available the week of August 20th. We approved replacing the two leaking skylights in the large skylight room and replacing the broken air conditioner in the After School Program classroom. Music Director Search reported that an audition with the full choir by a promising candidate was scheduled for August 17 th The Transition Team reported that they have received resumes or inquiries from 5 perspective candidates. The Parish Profile Committee has completed its one-on-one interviews and is scheduling several group discussions before writing up the profile, which will be presented to the Vestry for approval in September. 10 THE READERS CIRCLE BOOK GROUP November 6, 2017 SKYLIGHT ROOM, 7:00 PM INTO THIN AIR By Jon Krakauer DISCUSSION LEADER: Mike Odian There is still time to wrap up your summer reading as the Readers Circle Book Group reading season won t begin until November 6 th. INTO THIN AIR is Jon Krakauer s eyewitness report of the unfolding tragedy of a climb on Mt. Everest. As a journalist, he was hired to join the climb for OUTSIDE Magazine and was sent to Nepal to report on the ascent but was instead compelled to tell an icy story of survival and death. A bank of clouds was assembling on the not-so-distant horizon, but journalist-mountaineer Jon Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mt. Everest, saw nothing that "suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down." He was wrong. The storm, which claimed five lives and left countless more, including Krakauer s, in guilt-ridden disarray, would also provide the impetus for Into Thin Air, Krakauer's epic account of the May 1996 disaster. St. David s Readers Circle meets each month at 7:00 PM on the first Monday of the month. Newcomers are welcome to join the Readers Circle at any time. From the Outreach Committee: All of you have seen the tremendous devastation and disruption caused by endless rain in Houston. Our hearts and prayers are with Houston in the days ahead. IF you are considering making a donation we recommend sending your donation to either the American Red Cross or Episcopal Relief & Development. Things are bad- Food Banks have flooded out. Right now the needs are immediately for shelter, water and food. However, the Diocese recommends cash donations to a reputable company like the American Red Cross or ERD, rather than food or clothing drives. Our Outreach Neighbors All our Outreach neighbors will be visited by members of the Outreach Committee. Two of our Outreach neighbors have already been visited by Dale Wilhelm to get to know them and evaluate how best St. David s can assist them. Dale has come back with a shopping list of back-to-school clothing needs for the children in these two families. A bin will be left at the back of the church for these items if you would like to support them.
