6 Iain McKillop s Lent and Easter Exhibition From 15 February to 19 April Iain McKillop is a painter and art historian and an Anglican priest. His altarpieces hang in Gloucester Cathedral, Saint Peter s, West Molesey, and Saint John s, Bury St Edmunds. His exhibitions regularly tour British cathedrals and churches. This exhibition is made up from two groups of works. The Stations of the Cross displayed along the north aisle were made in 2016 and were first exhibited in Lichfield Cathedral in The challenge in devising Stations of the Cross is to find a way to present the positive message within the Cross yet treat the Passion with realism, dignity, sorrow that leads to true repentance, assurance of forgiveness and peace. The Seven Last Words from the Cross hang facing into the Ambulatory and the tomb of King Richard III. The Seven New Songs of the Resurrection hang facing into the Chapel of Christ the King whose stained glass shows the risen and ascended Christ in glory. These paintings were made following a visit to Wurzburg which was bombed on 16 March 1945 because it would burn easily and so be destroyed. These works are a tribute to some of the art works that were saved and stand as a memorial to all innocent lives taken as a result of war, in all nations. It asks us to learn a new way, following the loving, self-sacrificing and non-recriminatory, peace-bringing example of Christ. Image used above: The Seven Last Words

Tickets available via Eventbrite (see the Cathedral website for details).
