2 Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time Quinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario The Diocesan Development Fund A diocese is an area of land governed by a local bishop. When the Church was small in its infancy a diocese was a small area. The number of churches and priests needed to grow to meet the needs of the number of the people who lived there. Numbers of churches to serve the people of the diocese grew also. The Bishop always remained the head, chief priest of the diocese. Today diocese like Los Angeles and even San Bernardino can have an auxiliary bishop or bishops to help govern the diocese and care for the many parishes in the diocese. The importance of any diocese is the unity of all the Catholics in the area united with the Bishop of the diocese. When there were a few other parishes in a diocese, they would all celebrate Mass at the same time of day to show unity. The Bishop would take a piece of the consecrated host and send it to each parish of his diocese and it would be placed into the Precious Blood as a sign of our unity in the Eucharist. Today the priest breaks a small piece of the consecrated host and places it in the Chalice with the Precious Blood to remind us of this ancient practice of unity in the Eucharist; unity with the bishop and through him with all Catholics in the diocese. There are 99 parishes in our diocese of San Bernardino spread over the counties of San Bernardino and Riverside. It is up to the local bishop, known as our Ordinary, to set up ways to govern all the parishes in the diocese. We have diocesan offices at the Diocesan Center on Highland Avenue in San Bernardino. Various offices are set up to help the bishop care for the Catholic community of his diocese. Offices overseeing liturgy, religious education, youth ministry, and sacraments are just some of the offices our diocese has. As the bishop tries to help the parishes in their ministries and facilities he depends on the percentage of money the parishes contribute to the diocese on a monthly basis. This money, 18% of our Sunday collection, is sent to the diocese for the running of its offices and services. Each parish contributes to the diocese according to what they receive weekly. Small parishes contribute less than large ones, wealthier parishes more than poor. The Diocesan Development Fund is to assist the bishop in running the ministries and other services such as Catholic Charities. As Catholics of this diocese it is the responsibility of each parish and each member of the parish to contribute to the running of the diocese. Each of the members of the parish of St. Thomas the Apostle knows that they need their salary in order to remain in their home. Those funds take care of all the necessities to own a home and care for the family who lives there in all the areas of family life. The parish facilities, staff and programs are all part of your parish family of St. Thomas the Apostle. Each weekend we depend upon your generosity to keep the doors of the church open, the lights on, heated when it s cold and air conditioned when it is hot. Religious education, school, programs for children, teens and adults all depend on your contributions to the weekly collection. People used to give a dollar in the collection which started during the great depression when 1 dollar was a great deal of money. Today, it barely the covers the cost of a stamp. Each parishioner, each family, is to pay their share for the expenses to keep your parish functioning. The weekly collection is each families contribution to your parish financial need. One hour of your wages is worth about 2% of your income. At this time the overwhelming majority of parishioners contribute less than 1% of their income. This is not enough to keep our parish in good financial order. God calls us to contribute 10% as a way of thanking Him for all he provides. Remember he provides the earth, sun, stars and moon, food, your life, your body, your ability to work and make money, your family and everything that you have. It would be great if each family increased their contribution to 2% as a minimum. More if you are able to do so. Some families already give more and I thank them for this and encourage them to continue with what they are already contributing. Along with the weekly donation we need each family to contribute to the Diocesan Development Fund. Again if each of our active families would give 2% of their income to the DDF we would raise the $97,000 the diocese needs from us to continue the various ministries and services that help parishes and people of our diocese. If each of the 1,300 families contributed the minimum wage of $12 monthly for the next 11 months we would receive $171,000. We will pay the diocese $97,000 which is our DDF Goal for this year and the remaining $74,000 will help us pay for the fence so that the parish property will be secured. Knowing that some of the families will contribute more than the $12 each month we may pay off the whole fencing project this year. The $74,000 that will be over what our goal is will be placed in our Funds on Deposit which our Savings Account with the diocese. We will not be taxed the 18%, which will benefit our parish greatly. The Diocesan Development Fund (Continued) Financial responsibility is important to the functioning to all churches of all denominations. I commend all who continue to give to our parish finances, which allows us to operate in the black. This year we have an extraordinary expense of fencing in our facilities for the protection of our school children, our religious education and youth and all who come to the parish weekly for meetings and services. Your contribution to this endeavor is very important and will benefit everyone. I thank you for all you will contribute to the Lord by contributing to your parish of St. Thomas the Apostle.
