2 Called To Serve! Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario By virtue of our being baptized we are called by God to serve. Our service is based upon the example of Christ who came to serve and not be served. For us to truly live by his example we have to serve others before ourselves. This is not easy due to the fact that we live in a society that values ME FIRST as a way of life. This causes difficulties in all areas of our life because we are always looking to what I want, I need, I desire, I enjoy, I, I, I. To follow the Lord we need to change this attitude into looking to the needs of the other first. What does the other need, the other want, the other think, the other enjoy, Other, Other, Other. This isn t easy because for most of us our first inclination is to look after me first. Christ was totally other centered. He lived by the will of His Father in Heaven first and at all times. He could have come to the time of Him being crucified for the sake of all humanity and could have said, not now Abba, I have lots of things I want to do, people I want to meet, banquets I want to attend, etc. Let s plan my death for some time next year. He didn t do that. Jesus often went off to a deserted place as he did in last week s gospel story. He didn t go to relax and get away from the crowds but to be with His Father in prayer. When he went to pray it was because He needed to keep the communication with His Father open. He needed to receive the strength and guidance He needed to continue the mission entrusted to him, the salvation of humanity. He needed to be filled with the devotion he needed to the people he was to minister to each day. As we enter into Lent this coming Wednesday we will be marked with the sign of faith, a cross of ashes. The cross is symbolic of our need to die to ourselves so we can live for God and others. The ashes are symbolic of that death so we can rise to a new life in Christ. Our Parish Mission is entitled, Come Meet Jesus of Nazareth, Christ the Lord. Fr. Jack Stoeger is here to help each of us to know the Lord in a more profound way. We can know about the Lord and yet still not know Him personally. Faith is truly based upon a deep friendship with Him. A real friend is someone who we know intimately and they know us in the same way. Our goal for Lent is to enable our relationship with the Lord to grow and develop. I hope that you intend to be at the Mission on Monday and Tuesday this week. We will then be ready to enter into Lent in a more profound way as we celebrate Ash Wednesday. God knows you and He wants you to know him better. When we know the Lord then we can rely upon his inspiration and love to help us live for the other as Christ taught us. May your Lenten journey lift your spirit, inspire you to service in imitation of Christ the Lord, and fill you with God s love and peace! Let the Lord fill you with His love and grace and enable you to serve Him by serving others in His name. Stephen Ministry will be holding a raffle after all Masses.
