2 Third Sunday of Ordinary Time Tercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Gestures In the Liturgy and Sacraments When we attend Mass or the celebration of another Sacrament we may or may not be aware of certain gestures that are part of the celebration. They are very important to the whole liturgy and have great meaning which goes back to the early Church. Making the sign of the cross as we enter church and begin Mass or any prayer time is to call to mind the fact that we are baptized members of the Church, the Body of Christ. It should remind us that we have been saved by the Lord who sacrificed His life for us on the Cross. This is the most important reason for us to gather in prayer and to celebrate all the sacraments. Each sacrament is an extension of the Lord s presence in the community that we celebrate. The priest, as he enters the church, processes down the main aisle, stops in front of the altar and will genuflect or bow to the tabernacle where the presence of Christ in the Eucharist is kept. This is to show reverence to the Lord. He then goes behind the Altar and kisses it. In each consecrated altar there is an altar stone containing a relic of a saint. A relic is some small part of their body, or piece of clothing, or some other element that the saint touched or used. The early Church in Rome would gather at the tombs of the martyrs to celebrate Eucharist and this became a common practice through having the relic of a saint or martyr in each consecrated altar. The priest kisses the altar stone as a sign of reverence for the saint. More importantly the altar is also a symbol of the Lord Jesus. The altar signifies the cross He was crucified on and the Lord Jesus who was sacrificed. The priest stretches his arms out with open hands when he greets the community with, the Lord be with you. This is to show and embrace of all those present. Before proclaiming the Gospel the priest will make a sign of the cross on the Book and then do the same on his forehead, lips and over his heart. He says a little prayer with this gesture: May the Lord be on my mind, on my lips and in my heart. Many people do this as well when the priest does it. Incensing the altar, Gospel, bread and wine is a gesture that is one of purifying and setting them apart as holy. Incense was used in the presence of God in the Temple as a sacred offering to the Lord. It symbolized the prayers being lifted up to God as well as purifying the gifts. During the celebration of the Eucharist the priest will place both hands over the bread and wine. This imposition of hands is used in other sacraments as well when the priest says the prayer of absolution in Reconciliation, when those to be anointed with the Oil of the Sick in the Sacrament of the Sick, it is the sign of a man being ordained a deacon, priest or bishop in the Sacrament of Ordination and it signifies the Holy Spirit coming down upon the one receiving the sacrament. The sign of peace before receiving Eucharist is to signify the unity among the community of the baptized before coming forward to receive the sacrament of unity, the Eucharist. It is a ritual gesture that we are meant to share with one or 2 people only but it symbolizes our unity with all present and with the Lord. Each gesture made by the whole community or the priest alone is to convey certain meaning that we need to become aware of. When done with the knowledge of what it signifies it brings the celebration of the Mass or other sacraments to life and enhances the meaning of what we are celebrating. Think about these gestures and what they are to convey to you and others each time you make them. 5:00 p.m. Mass will be cancelled on Sunday, February 3 rd due to low attendance and insufficient volunteers. Starting February 3 rd, we will have someone available in the Parish Office on Sundays from - 12:30 p.m. to assist with questions, Mass intentions, and messages. We will not have the full staff on hand, but want to be available for those who are unable to visit our office during normal office hours. This will not include holiday weekends. Boy Scouts will be hosting Super Bowl Sunday breakfast on Sunday, February 3 rd after the 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Masses. They will be serving pancakes, eggs, sausage and more. Tax letters will automatically be mailed out before January 31 st for those who have donated $250 or more in weekly and holiday collections in DDF, Combined Spring and Fall Collections, and Retired Religious fund is processed separately through the Diocese. If you donated less but would like a letter, please call the Parish Office. Our Lady of Sorrows Rosary Makers will meet on the 2 nd Tuesday, January 12 th in the KDC 6:00-8:00 p.m. Rosary Makers touch hearts with prayer, inspiring suffering souls helps make a difference in lives all over the world. The experience of a shared meal is basic to human relationships. Those involved in the parish ministry of preparing and serving dinner at the Path of Life Emergency shelter understand the joy and gratitude from those we serve and the hope we bring to their lives. Their Guest Chef program alleviates the costs, allowing staff to focus on finding jobs, housing, and support for clients at the shelter who seek to get back into the mainstream with a home for themselves and their family. Almost 2,000 people from Path of Life Shelters were placed in permanent housing last year. Call the parish office if you feel called to join in this ministry. No special cooking skills required - only a warm heart, a pleasant smile, and a desire to serve as Christ did.
