2 April 2, 2017 Fifth Sunday in Lent Fifth Sunday in Lent One summer I found myself sitting with many pilgrims atop Masada, the isolated fortress Herod the Great built in the Judean desert. Our guide told us the grisly history of the 960 Jewish rebels who committed suicide there after holding off the Roman army for three years at the end of the First Roman-Jewish War (66-73 AD). They knew they would die there, and that the Jews would be driven from their homeland once again. Hillel spoke of his own journey. He had come to Israel in the 1960s, just for a few weeks. Before returning to the U.S. he visited Masada. He noted an inscription left on the rocks by one of those ancient warriors, perhaps in the last hours of his life. It was this inscription, written in 73 AD, that touched Hillel s heart so much that he resolved to return to Israel and spend his life aiding the survivors of the holocaust in building a Jewish homeland. He invited us to sit quietly on those rocks, letting the desert sun seep into our bones, and ponder which scripture they may have inscribed for an unseen generation Hillel s generation to someday find. Of course, it was Ezekiel 37, today s first reading: Oh my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the land of Israel. For Christians, the fullness of the meaning of Ezekiel s prophecy is the resurrection of Jesus from his own rock-hewn tomb. For Jews, that resurrection is the modern state of Israel. But the dry bones of exile will never come fully to life until all can live in peace in the land God gave. What promise of resurrection are you giving your life to help fulfill? Gabriel House The Gabriel House is committed to assisting pregnant women and families with small children in need. The Eagle Gabriel House is open Thursday s from 1-4pm and is located at 127 E. 3 rd Street, Eagle, CO. MARY S ANNUAL EASTER EGG HUNT Any parishioners who would like to donate candy for the parish Easter egg hunt at can drop off candy at the back of the church or at the preschool from 8am-5:30pm until Thursday, April 13. The Easter Egg hunt will take place Easter Sunday at after 8:30am Mass and depending on amount of candy received, after the 10:30am mass. All families are welcomed. There will be two sections one for ages 5 and under and another older children. ST. Esta victoria tendrá lugar sólo en el misterio pascual de Cristo: pasión, muerte y resurrección, pero en esta liturgia se prefigura ya en la visión del profeta Ezequías de los huesos muertos que recobran vida (1L) y, sobre todo, en la resurrección de Lázaro (EV), el amigo de Jesús. El tema de fondo es de gran interés: la muerte es y ha sido siempre un gran enigma para el género humano. Podemos decir que después de los evangelios de cuaresma de la samaritana, del ciego de nacimiento, éste último de Lázaro promueve la esperanza del hombre pecador a una altura inimaginable. Aunque uno esté muerto por sus pecados y sus culpas, es más grande el poder del Señor que lo salvará. Hut Trip Thank You On March our 7 th and 8 th grade students went on a Hut Trip, snowshoeing to their huts where they camped. Thank you to Amanda Painter and all of the parent volunteers who made this trip possible! PART FIVE: EXCERPTS FROM THE HOLY FATHER S 2017 LENTEN MESSAGE The parable [of Lazarus and the rich man] goes on to offer a message for all Christians. The rich man asks Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers, who are still alive. But Abraham answers: They have Moses and the prophets, let them listen to them (v. 29). Countering the rich man s objections, he adds: If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead (v. 31). The rich man s real problem thus comes to the fore. At the root of all his ills was the failure to heed God s word. As a result, he no longer loved God and grew to despise his neighbor. The word of God is alive and powerful, capable of converting hearts and leading them back to God. When we close our heart to the gift of God s word, we end up closing our heart to the gift of our brothers and sisters.
