A month at the Cathedral. Well, if you had to choose a month to spend working in a very large, cold, stone building - this past month was it! In case you haven t spotted, I ve been away from the Team, carrying out a four-week placement at Wells Cathedral as a part of my training. The idea is to spend some time reflecting on a different context for ministry and mission, both as a way of Issue 327 July 2018 reflecting on the context you have come from, but also on what it means to be a priest in different places. I ve had the privilege of spending a lot of time with the Dean of Wells, the Very Revd Dr John Davies, and as you might expect, if you know me at all, I ve made the most of that opportunity to quiz him! Perhaps as parish churches we look rather enviously at Cathedrals. All that money. All those staff. All those priests. But, whilst many of the challenges faced by Wells are unique to cathedrals, many are similar to those we face here; clergy vacancies, working with volunteers, reaching out with the message of God s love to an increasingly secular world. I ve had a full timetable for the last month - leaving Yatton in time to arrive for Morning
M two Liturgy in the Lady Chapel and setting out for home after Evensong. Long days. But those services brought alive for me the reality of worship as the heart-beat of the Cathedral and the way in which they act as a spiritual anchor for many of the community there - especially the clergy. Even more than in a parish, there are lots of meetings, HR issues, financial meetings, fabric commitees. The Cathedral is first and foremost a church, but it s also a large employer and tourist attraction that draws people globally to a little corner of Somerset. I met some wonderful people from all over the world, drawn here by the beauty of the building and who left changed by what they found within it. Among my experiences were - going on a High Parts Tour (highly recommended!), Pilgrim Days for Year 6 s, a Choral Evensong to commemorate the arrival of the Windrush, planning for the Zambian celebrations in July, welcoming many dogs and their owners to the Cathedral (the Cathedral and Evensong is now dog-friendly!) and even meeting one of the builders of the Chapter House at St Mary s. My time at Wells ended with the wonderfully moving opportunity to sit in the sanctuary for the ordination of deacons, and witness close-up what I had myself experienced only two years ago. So, what did I learn in my time at Wells? Some of you will know that I worked at Southwark Cathedral many years ago, so Cathedral life wasn t a complete surprise to me. I was reminded that there are always piles of chairs hiding somewhere and that if there are people in a Cathedral you don t want to upset, that would be the vergers! As it so happens, the vergers in Wells are a splendid bunch and took very good care of me, helping me out when I was uncertain about where to stand or what to do. Over the last month, I ve experienced much kindness and hospitality and a real generosity of time. I ve learned a lot. Above all, I ve learned that, however different our contexts, we (the church) are all about, perhaps only about, sharing the wonderful abundance of God s love for all people. Open doors and open hearts. It s a challenge for us all! Jo Stobart St Barnabas Fete For once the day of the annual St Barnabas Fete was sunny and warm. In fact, it was scorching hot and it was a nice change for people to be taking their cream teas inside the church because it was nice and cool rather than to avoid a deluge outside
M three The village market is in Claverham Village Hall on 21st July from 10am to 12noon. Come along, browse the stalls and catch up with all your friends for a cuppa. The Lunch Club coach outing has a few seats available, Wed. 15th. August - phone for details Jean Inside.. Remembering George Welch as in previous years! All the stalls did well and the event was well attended, raising a total of 566 for St Barnabas. and outside!! Many thanks to all who supported the Fete and to those stalwarts who worked so hard to make the afternoon an enjoyable event. Other Claverham news. The senior citizen's tea and entertainment is now back on in the village hall. It is on Saturday 4th August look out for posters for information. Yes, I remember George. He was good friends with Bill Roe and I remember one occasion when Doug was still working, I invited them both to dinner. It was quite a noisy occasion and full of laughter. Not long after that George left Claverham to be nearer his sister. Brenda Brenda also told me that the hydrangea bush in the grounds of St Barnabas church came from a cutting from George's garden. Thank you for your memories Brenda, I will pass them on to George s sister. Ed Beryl Oldfield s 90th Birthday Beryl and her family would like to thank all friends and neighbours who attended the service of celebration at St. Barnabas and the garden party at her home afterwards on 1st July. Instead of birthday presents, donations were given towards the St. Barnabas
M four repairs. The total given was a magnificent sum of over 850 (including Gift Aid tax recovered). Beryl is pictured with her great-grandson, Ryland, and with family and friends at St. Barnabas after the service. Ann Grant PCC Awayday!! The rescheduling of the PCC meeting by a week meant that Andrea, Lin and I would miss the meeting on 13th June as we were on holiday. Coincidently we were all holidaying with a cruise down the Danube, albeit we were going from Bucharest to Budapest and Andrea and John were going from Budapest to the Black Sea and back again. However, on reviewing our itineraries we found that we were all in Belgrade on the same day, 12th June, and maybe could meet up. We had an early start and, having seen the sights, had a free afternoon to tour the city. Andrea, plus husband John, had their tour in the afternoon, including a break in the city centre before their tour ended.
Now Belgrade has 1.3 million inhabitants, and we, having visited St Michael the Archangel Cathedral, were on our way to our next venue when suddenly a familiar sound could PCC absconders in Belgrade! be heard nearby it was Andrea who had spotted us in the midst of the hustle and bustle of Belgrade life, strolling along in the in the 33C heat. We joined up to walk with Andrea and John to their pick-up point and saw them on their way. Their boat, Thomas Hardy, was tied up alongside ours, Emerald Sky, so the good news was that there was time for four wonderfully cold beers on board Emerald Sky before we set off on our way, early evening, to Osijek in Croatia. Although we didn t discuss anything on the PCC agenda, we did all marvel at seeing St Sava Church, which, although still being built, is the largest Orthodox Cathedral in the world. Dave M five Clevedon Foodbank I have had an e mail from the Foodbank. Their most urgent requirements are as follows- Bags for life Cartons of long life milk Multipacks of small fruit juice Biscuits Large tins of soup Multi pack chocolate bars Jam Tuna Sponge Pudding Instant mashed potato Spaghetti Toiletries - shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes. Holy Trinity Summer Fayre Saturday 21st July in the grounds of Holy Trinity Church from 2-4pm There will be all the usual fun-of-the- Fayre stalls, including tombola, washing line, bric-a-brac, books.
