Our Mission Statement We are the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows - Saint Anthony, a Roman Catholic Community; as one Eucharistic Family, we are Christ-centered and Spirit-led. Children of God our Father, we are united by His Love and sustained by the intercession of Our Lady and Saint Anthony. We give witness to our faith in action.

3 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, A few months ago, at a meeting of the parish priests and deacons, the concern was raised that a more intensive focus be given to our understanding and reception of the Most Holy Eucharist. It is after all, the source and summit of our entire spiritual life. We agreed that a series of homilies be dedicated to this purpose so that all our parishioners might rekindle, in the words of St. John Paul II, our sense of Eucharistic amazement! To this end, it was decided that we devote the homilies of three weekends of February (Feb 5, 12, 19) to a suitable catechesis on the gift and mystery of the Eucharist. It is always helpful to review what we believe as Catholics and to consider our response to that belief. It was once said of marriage, Routine can be the death of the reverence that a couple should have for one another. Well, routine can indeed be the death of the reverence we should have for the Blessed Sacrament. I do hope that you find our homilies a helpful spiritual refresher. St. John of Avila reminds us: Surely such a stroke of love should be enough to awaken anyone from the slumber of indifference. Let such a one reflect upon this Mystery and say to himself: It is God Almighty who will come down upon the altar at the words of consecration; I shall hold Him in my hands, and converse with Him, and receive Him into my breast. With affection, Msgr. Gervasio Stewardship Report Weekly Collection (January 1) $18,225 Weekly Collection: (February 5) $20,046 Diocesan Assessment Collection $1,955 Please Note The Parish Office will be closed on Monday, February 20, in observance of Presidents Day. Mwen espere ke ou jwenn omeli nou an yon itil espirityèl "resiklaj." St Jean nan Avila fè nou sonje: Se vre wi sa yo yon konjesyon serebral nan renmen yo ta dwe ase yo reveye nenpòt moun ki soti nan dòmi an nan indiféran. Se pou sa yo yon yon sèl reflechi sou sa a Mistè epi di nan kè l: 'Paske se Bondye ki gen tout pouvwa ki moun ki pral desann sou lotèl la nan pawòl ki nan konsekrasyon; M 'kenbe l' nan men m', ak konvès ansanm avè l', ak resevwa l 'nan tete m'. Avèk afeksyon, Msgr. Gervasio Rapèl Biri pawas la ap fèmen Lendi 20 Fevrye n-ap obsève President s Day. Remember, man, you are dust And to dust you will return. This year, the penitential season of Lent begins on March 1. Please bring in all old palms to be burned and used for ashes on Ash Wednesday. There will be containers at all the exit doors on the weekends, beginning February 4 and 5, to hold the palms. Please Pray for Our Beloved Deceased Samuel A Badessa Vincent Luciano Marie Manuguerra 3

4 What's New at Our Parish School? There is no better feeling than to come home! This is just what happened for children's author Patricia Yunza Geurds. Patricia is an alumna of Our Lady of Sorrows School, and was just a little smile in our first Kindergarten class at the school. She contacted the school to share her joyful memories of her primary school years at OLS, and inquired about visiting the children in the younger grades. She brought along her latest book, The Color Walk. This lively little book introduces young readers to colors and shapes that a mother and child observe during a neighborhood stroll. Imagine the curiosity of a youngster discovering a book with characters who look as though the child drew them! Black lines on white sketch paper with only the color shapes accentuated. Our PreSchool classes from PreK 3 and PreK 4, along with our Kindergarten and First Graders enjoyed the time they spent with Patricia. This was but one of the many activities and events the school enjoyed in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. We opened with the 11 a.m. Mass on January 29 and closed the week in prayer. We recognized the feast of St. Blaise together with our school and parish families with the blessing of the throats. Catholic schools: communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service! Holy Name Society News The next Holy Name Society meeting will be held on February 15 at 1:00 p.m. (Please note that it will take place on the third Wednesday this month, not the second.) This month's reading & discussion subject will be, "How Sports Can Help You Win at Life" from the Christopher News Notes literature. As always, we invite all parish men and their practical catholic male friends to attend our meeting. You may be surprised as to what the Holy Name Society is all about.
