3 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners, Pro Deo et Patria You may have come across this motto in its English translation, For God and Country. The words are engraved over the central doors of one of our diocesan high schools. I recall them in considering our Lord s teaching in today s Gospel, Render to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God. We might say that Our Lord is reminding us that we have a dual-citizenship and each has its responsibilities. Our American tradition has enshrined the principle of separation of church and state and we can often struggle with its interpretation and implications. In today s bulletin, I have provided an abridged article by Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia. I hope you find it as informative as I did. Enjoy these autumn days! Remember to pray the Rosary! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio Stewardship Report Weekly Collection: Oct. 15 $17,833 Hearing Device Proposal St Anthony Our recent proposal regarding the purchase of personal hearing assistance devices for parishioners frequenting St. Anthony Church received a poor response only four people! Unfortunately this level of interest would not warrant the expense the parish would incur to install the necessary equipment to the sound system. I certainly wish we could have moved forward with this helpful service to our people. Msgr. Gervasio Thanks a Million! Thanks to all the wonderful parishioners who cleaned out their closets and cleared out their clutter a tremendous amount of clothing and housewares was donated at our fall drive the past two weekends. All donations will help those who are served by Better Community Housing of Trenton. Please Pray for Our Beloved Deceased Teresa Azzaro Frank Funke Ramona Mydlowski Marie Smith 3 rd Annual O.L.S. October The Month of the Rosary The month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. The liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. During the month of October, let us consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we too can use in order to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation. Rosaries Available For anyone in need, rosary beads and prayer pamphlets will be available at Our Lady s Shrine at Our Lady of Sorrows Church and at the side altar of the Blessed Mother at St. Anthony Church throughout the month. Free will donations will be greatly appreciated to help replenish supplies and to pay for postage for the rosaries we send to the 3 rd World missions, the military, and the First Communicants. 3

The month of November is dedicated to prayer for the faithful departed. During this month the names of our beloved deceased, indicated on the envelopes you have returned, will be placed upon the altars of our churches. There they will remain for prayerful remembrance. In addition, our churches are providing a place of remembrance for the framed photos of our beloved deceased. These serve as a reminder to pray for those who have gone before us. Due to limited space you may bring one framed photo. At Our Lady of Sorrows they will be displayed by the statue of the Blessed Mother and at Saint Anthony they will be placed at the side altar. 5 From the Principal s Desk It has been another very busy week here at the school! We are already half-way through the first trimester, and the students are fully immersed in their classes and activities. We began the week in a very sweet way with Kindergarten having a Munchkins with Mommy breakfast. The students had the opportunity to have a snack with mom while answering questions about their favorite memories with their moms. Then I had the opportunity to spend some time with the Pre K through 2 nd grade, reading them the book Quackers a perfect story to reflect our values of accepting others and being open to new ideas. Reading together is still one my favorite activities with the kids! On Wednesday, our 5 th graders, with the help of Fr. Jean and Mrs. Costantini, conducted our monthly student prayer service. They did a beautiful job of reading and singing, and of reminding us that we are all disciples of Jesus, and that praying the Rosary is one of the best forms of prayer. Pre K and Kindergarten celebrated some local heroes with a visit from the Hamilton Fire Department! The children had the opportunity to sit in the fire truck, see all the tools and hoses the firemen use, and even got to see what the firefighters wear when they go into a fire. The picture below shows how they were completely involved in what Captain Ryan had to say especially when he told them he went to Our Lady of Sorrows School too! I would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to our PTA for a wonderful Knight to Remember auction this past Friday night. There was so much work that was done in preparation for this event, and I am truly grateful for everyone s dedication to making it a successful evening. The baskets were beautiful and the prizes were spectacular it was a terrific night to be a part of our school community. The days go by so quickly, and every day is a joy to be in the school. Thank you for your continued prayers as we teach our children to live out their Catholic values! Peace and blessings, Mrs. Maureen Tuohy 5 En Masse after Mass OLS students from Pre K to 8 th Grade pose for the traditional cross picture after mass on First Friday. Seniors Activities Senior Club #1 The next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 8 at 1:00 PM in St. Anthony's Church hall. Senior Club #2 There will be no meetings November through February. For more information, please call Doreen Napoleon ( ) for details. New members are welcome to join our clubs. Rosary Altar News Corporate Sunday is November 5 at the 8 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. All parishioners are invited to join us after the Mass when we pray the rosary for world peace, an end to terrorism, an end to abortion, for the Pope, the personal intentions of all those present and for the intentions of all Rosarians throughout the world. The society s monthly meeting will be held on Monday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Meeting Room. Lena Mihara will be our guest speaker. Her topic is Keeping Your Finances Secure. Carmela Perferi and her committee will provide refreshments. Please remember to bring your donations for our Thanksgiving and Christmas service projects.

6 Public Witness and Catholic Citizenship Public witness on issues of public concern is natural for Catholics because we have a commitment to the common good and to the dignity of each human person. Those two pillars come right out of Scripture. They underpin all of Catholic social thought. That includes politics. Politics is where the competing moral visions of a society meet and struggle. Since a large majority of American citizens are religious believers, it makes sense for people of faith to bring their faith into the public square. As a result, if we believe that a particular issue is gravely evil and damaging to society, then we have not just a religious duty but also a democratic duty, to hold accountable the candidates who want to allow that evil. Failing to do so is an abuse of responsibility on our part, because that s where we exercise our power as citizens most directly in the voting booth. The separation of Church and state can never mean that religious believers should be silent about legislative issues, the appointment of judges, or public policy. It s not the job of the Church to sponsor political candidates. But it s very much the job of the Church to guide Catholics to think and act in accord with their faith. Catholic is a word that has real meaning. We don t invent that meaning We inherit it from the Gospel and the experience of the Church...If we choose to call ourselves Catholic, then that word has consequences for what we believe and how we act. We can t truthfully call ourselves Catholic and then behave as if we re not If a man says he loves his wife, his wife will want to see the evidence in his fidelity. The same applies to our relationship with God. If we say we re Catholic, we need to show that by our love for the Church and our fidelity to what she teaches and believes. The Church is not a political organism. She has no interest in partisanship because getting power or running governments is not what she s about, and the more closely she identifies herself with any single party, the fewer people she can effectively reach. Scripture and Catholic teaching, however, do have public consequences because they guide us in how we should act in relation to one another Catholic social action, including political action, is a natural byproduct of the Church s moral message. We can t call ourselves Catholic, and then simply stand by while immigrants get mistreated, or the poor get robbed, or even more fundamentally unborn children get killed. If our faith is real, then it will bear fruit in our public decisions and behaviors, including our political choices. Each of us needs to follow his or her own conscience. But conscience doesn t emerge from a vacuum. The way we get a healthy conscience is by submitting it to God s will; and the way we find God s will is by listening to the counsel of the Church and trying honestly to live in accord with her guidance. If we find ourselves disagreeing, with the teaching of our own Church on serious matters, then it s probably not the Church that s wrong. The problem is much more likely with us. In the end, the heart of truly faithful citizenship is this: We re better citizens when we re more faithful Catholics. The more authentically Catholic we are in our lives, choices, actions and convictions, the more truly we will contribute to the moral and political life of our nation. Archbishop Charles Chaput, October 18, Do You Know Catholic Social Teaching? Each of us should carefully consider our choices and lifestyles. We live in a culture that prizes the consumption of material goods. While the poor often have too little, many of us can be easily caught up in a frenzy of wanting more and more; a bigger home, a larger car, etc. Even though energy resources literally fuel our economy and provide a good quality of life, we need to ask about ways we can conserve energy, prevent pollution, and live more simply. Sharing Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions Summary Report, US Catholic Bishops Sanctuary Lamps At Our Lady of Sorrows One lamp burns in loving memory of Mary Chomicki at the request of the Chomicki Family. Remember those Less Fortunate A life not lived for others is not a life. St Teresa of Kolkata We have the opportunity to assist the needy within our own parish through the donations you make to the St. Vincent DePaul Conference. At Saint Anthony Church Permanent Poor Boxes are found at the doors of the church. At Our Lady of Sorrows Church A collection is taken up on the 2 nd and 4 th Sundays of the month. Green donation containers are found at the church doors. Donations may also be made by placing a gift in the collection basket along with your parish contribution. It should be in a separate envelope that is clearly marked Poor Box. Checks should be made payable to OLS-St Anthony. Faith in Our Future Lord Jesus Christ, Word of the Father, we turn to you. Watch over our plans. Enliven our service to the Church. Sustain our labors. Guide our steps in search of the best ways to proclaim your Gospel. Our poverty is great. We do not place trust in ourselves but only in you. Encourage us, reassure us, give us your blessing. You, who with the Holy Spirit, live and reign in us and in your Church forever and ever. Amen.
