3 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners: We begin the month of November being reminded of the Communion of Saints. As Catholics we believe in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church. (CCC 962) On Wednesday, the Church summons us to worship to honor all the saints. One of the prefaces of the Mass expresses well their importance for us: By their way of life you offer us an example, by communion with them you give us companionship, by their intercession, sure support so that, encouraged by so great a cloud of witnesses, we may run as victors in the race before us and win with them the imperishable crown of glory Pope Francis provides too, the reason for celebrating All Saints Day: To be saint is not the privilege for the few, but a vocation for everyone. I like, too, the powerful reminder of Charles Peguy: There is only one tragedy in the end: not to have been a saint. Isn t this after all, the very purpose and goal of our brief life on earth? On Thursday, the Church prays for our beloved deceased. Scripture reminds us that it is a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead. Pope Benedict expressed this loving duty so beautifully, Praying for one s departed loved ones is a far too immediate urge to be suppressed; it is a most beautiful manifestation of solidarity, love and assistance The happiness or unhappiness of a person dear to me who has now crossed to the other shore, depends in part on whether I remember or forget him, he does not stop needing my love. November 1 and 2 very special days! Let us celebrate them at the Lord s altar! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio Stewardship Report Weekly Collection: Oct. 23 $16,676 World Mission Sunday $1,660 Annual Catholic Appeal (68% of goal as of 10/24) Pledged: $74,306 Paid $67,897 Donors: 474 Solemnity of All Saints Holy Day of Obligation Schedule of Masses Tuesday, October 31 SA: 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 1 OLS: 7:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. (School Mass), 7:00 p.m. SA: 12:15 p.m. (English) & 6:30 p.m. (Creole) Please Note There will not be a School Mass at 8:15 a.m. on Friday, November 3. An nou selebre yo sou lotèl Senyè a! Avèk afeksyon, Msgr. Gervasio November 2 All Souls Day In addition to our regular morning Masses, a Mass for All Souls will be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to participate in this liturgy, which is offered in our love for all who have died. All Souls Remembrance Please remember to return your All Souls Remembrance envelope. These, with the names of your beloved deceased, will be placed upon our altar through November in prayerful remembrance at all Masses. You are also invited to place a framed photo at the shrines of Our Lady in our churches. 3

4 Daylight Saving Time ends next weekend (2 a.m. on Sun., Nov. 5). Remember to turn your clocks back an hour. Do You Know Catholic Social Teaching? The Catholic Catechism instructs the faithful that good government has two duties, both of which must be carried out and neither of which can be ignored. The first duty is to welcome the foreigner out of charity and respect for the human person. Persons have the right to immigrate and thus government must accommodate this right to the greatest extent possible, especially financially blessed nations: "The more prosperous nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to welcome the foreigner in search of the security and the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his country of origin. Public authorities should see to it that the natural right is respected that places a guest under the protection of those who receive him." (CCC, 2241) Priesthood Sunday Priesthood Sunday, October 29, is a day especially chosen to celebrate the sacrament of Holy Orders the sacrament of priestly dedication. This Sunday we acknowledge and honor the priests of our parish. Msgr. Thomas Gervasio and Fr. Jean Félicien serve us with holy guidance, patient teaching, and gentle spiritual encouragement. They deliver an opportunity for us to grow closer to God as they serve In the Person of Christ. Their vocation calls them to serve as pastoral counselors for our spiritual journey. Now let us offer prayer and heartfelt thanks for their sacrifice and commitment: A Priesthood Sunday Prayer Mary, Mother of Jesus, throw your mantle of purity over our priests. Protect them, guide them, and keep them in your heart. Be a Mother to them, especially in times of discouragement and loneliness. Love them and keep them belonging completely to Jesus. Like Jesus, they, too, are your sons, so keep their hearts pure and virginal. Keep their minds filled with Jesus, and put Jesus always on their lips, so that he is the one they offer to sinner and to all they meet. Mary, Mother of Jesus, be their Mother, loving them and bringing them joy. Take special care of sick and dying priests, and the ones most tempted. Remember how they spent their youth and old age, their entire lives serving and giving all to Jesus. Mary, bless them and keep a special place for them in your heart. Give them a piece of your heart, so beautiful and pure and immaculate, so full of love and humility, so that they, too, can grow in the likeness of Christ. Dear Mary, make them humble like you, and holy like Jesus. Amen. St. Teresa of Kolkata Remembering and Praying for Our Beloved Deceased of the Past Year Our parish will remember and pray for the deceased of the past year at a special Mass to be celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church on Saturday, November 11, at 10:30 a.m. Let us pray also for their families and friends. October The Month of the Rosary The month of October is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. The liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful. During the month of October, let us consider this beautiful prayer of the Rosary as a means that we too can use in order to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by meditating on the great mysteries of our salvation. Rosaries Available For anyone in need, Rosary beads and prayer pamphlets will be available at Our Lady s Shrine at Our Lady of Sorrows Church and at the side altar of the Blessed Mother at St. Anthony Church throughout the month. Free will donations will be greatly appreciated to help replenish supplies and to pay for postage for the rosaries we send to the 3 rd World missions, the military, and the First Communicants. Holy Name Society News Meetings Our monthly meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month, October through May. The time and location of each meeting will be announced in the bulletin. The Christopher News Notes subject of reading and discussion at the November 8 meeting will be Accepting that God Loves You. 5 Principal s Column It is amazing that we are in the last full week of October! It was a short week for the students but a full week of activities! The week began with a Pink Dress Down Day to support breast cancer awareness month. Everyone donated to have the opportunity to dress in pink and show our support for cancer research. The picture below gives you an idea of how happy 2 nd grade was to show off their pink! The Student Council sends out a big thank you to all who participated and supported this cause. One of our favorite weeks of the year is when the Scholastic Book Fair arrives and this year was no exception. Each year Mrs. Gottfried transforms the library into a sea of books and the week was a wonderful success. All classes make a visit to the book fair, and the students have the chance to browse through and buy many different types of books, as well as take a chance at guessing how many pieces of candy are in the Candy Jar. This year there was even a raffle to win one of many different posters. We are grateful to our middle school students for helping our younger grades pick out the perfect book everyone wins with books! Thanksgiving Sharing Once again, our parish Social Justice/Social Concerns Committee will be collecting frozen turkeys, canned goods, and non-perishable items to fill Thanksgiving baskets for Mount Carmel Guild and the Better Community Housing of Trenton (Martin House) and those in our parish family who are in need. We ask you to bring food for a Thanksgiving Day meal, such as frozen turkeys, potatoes, vegetables, stuffing, gravy mix, and dessert. We can also use gift certificates from local grocery stores or cash donations, which will be used to supplement the items donated to make complete meals. (Checks should be made payable to OLS-SA. ) Please bring your donations to the concrete storage shed in the back parking lot at St. Anthony s Church and to the Rectory garage at Our Lady of Sorrows Church at all Masses on the weekend of November Even in hard economic times, our parish has always given generously to needy families in our area. There continues to be many families in need. Even those employed are struggling, especially those we refer to as the working poor. People working full-time jobs in low-paying professions are struggling more than ever to stretch their meager paychecks to cover the costs of gasoline, heating oil, rent, and groceries. While times are tough for all of us, the poor need our generosity and support more than ever. As Deacon Joe Malloy was fond of reminding us, one day when we are called home to the Father, He will ask us what we did when we saw Him hungry, thirsty, cold, and naked in the faces of the poor. Let us continue to serve God by serving the poor. If you would like to help the Social Justice/Social Concerns Committee with the Thanksgiving drive, Adopt-a-Family, or other activities, please contact Kathy McGlinchy (klm76@optonline.net; ). Sanctuary Lamps The week was capped off by one of the most popular school events Trunk or Treat! The school parking lot becomes the place to be for trick or treating as the children go from decorated car to car gathering as much candy as they can. Everyone was in costume, and we saw everything from super heroes to scary skeletons. There was pizza and drinks, and a few games too. Thank you to Mrs. Burden and the PTA for offering the children a safe place to have an amazing night! Each day we try to instill in our students that they are God s children, and that each of us is where we are because this is where God wants us to be. We are so loved by God, and we are each an integral part of our families, our school community, and our world. This week especially we are reminded how important it is that we should share and show that love to all those we come in contact with. My prayer is that we each remember God s unwavering love for us, no matter how challenging the road we face. Peace & Blessings, Maureen Tuohy, Principal At Our Lady of Sorrows One lamp burns in loving memory of Charles & Phyllis Scarna at the request of their daughter Charlotte. Mark Your Calendar Theology and Ecology in the Cathedral of Chartres, France (Memories in Stone Windows to the Invisible) Thursday, November 9, 7-8 p.m. Church of Saint Ann, Lawrenceville The great Roman and Gothic Cathedrals are not only places of worship but also vehicles for teaching religious education. They are an interesting combination of art and architecture, stained glass windows and massive statues, myths and symbols houses of worship and theology, which in France were all dedicated to Mary and built in alignment with the Zodiac Constellation of Virgo. Here is where those who could not read or write entered into the sacred, and through prayer and observation learned the mysteries of our faith. This presentation will explore these elements and more as seen in the beautiful and imposing Cathedral of Chartres, about an hour by train outside of Paris and designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site and the high point of French Gothic art a masterpiece. To be there is to enter another world that embraces and unites the sacred and the secular. Every year at Pentecost thousands of pilgrims walk from Notre Dame in Paris to Chartres; our guides will take us on a virtual pilgrimage and help us to appreciate what is so often hidden to the casual observer. 9 Dear OLS-SA Parish Family and Friends The time has come for me to say good-bye again. I would first like to thank Monsignor Gervasio for his hospitality and graciousness in letting me stay at the Rectory. Because of Monsignor, the Parish Staff, and the good parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows St. Anthony, my time here has afforded me the opportunity to do ten mission appeals for my Bishop in India. Thank you for your continuous prayers and support, and I promise my prayers for all of you during my daily Mass, and in my personal prayers. When I return home to India, I always take very fond memories of all of you. Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony s parishioners are one in spirit with my parishioners in India.
