3 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Parishioners: Happy New Year! A Blessed Advent! Advent is indeed a time whose beauty is often obscured by the commercialism that surrounds our preparation for Christmas. It is as if we celebrate Christmas before Christmas. As a consequence, the Christmas season is not so much a time of celebration as one of rest and recovery! Let s not allow Advent to pass us by. We surely will be running from one task to the next, one busy day to the next, yet Advent invites us to slow down, to take some time to be quiet in the presence of the Lord, to reflect with gratitude on the blessing we have received. Might I suggest a few Advent activities? Join us for our two-evening mini-advent retreat under the direction of Archbishop Harry J. Flynn of Minneapolis-St. Paul on December 7 and 8. Participate in our Adopt a Family Project. Take some time on Thursdays to pray before the Blessed Sacrament (following our 7:00 a.m. Mass through 6:00 p.m.). Use our Advent reflection books, available at the doors of our churches. May Advent draw you ever closer to the Lord. With affection, Msgr. Gervasio Stewardship Report Due to an early bulletin deadline, the amount of the November 22 collection will be reported next week. The Tradition of the Advent Wreath This weekend, the Church begins celebrating the season of Advent, a time to anticipate the birth of Christ, the Light of the World. Our parish will continue its tradition of inviting families to carry the lighted Advent candle in procession at the beginning of each weekend Mass. If your family is interested in participating in this special tradition, please arrive at church 20 minutes before Mass starts and let the deacon know that you are interested in carrying in the Advent candle. Liturgical Celebrations this Week Mon., Nov. 30 St. Andrew Thu., Dec. 3 St. Francis Xavier Fri., Dec. 4 St. John Damascene 3 Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire-a Frè-m ak Sè-m yo: Bòn Ane! Bon Tan Lavan! Se pou nou pa kite tan Lavan an depase nou. Nou siman pral kouri sòti nan yon travay ak lòt, yon jou okipe ak yon lòt, ankò Lavan envite nou pou nou ralanti, pran yon ti tan pou nou rete trankil nan prezans Seyè a, pou nou reflechi ak rekonesans sou benediksyon ke nou te resevwa yo. Banm ba nou kèk ide sou kèk aktivite Lavan? Mwen enviten vini nan retrèt Lavan nou an anba direksyon Achevèk Harry J. Flynn nan Minneapolis-St. Pòl jou kap 7 Desanm ak 8 Desanm nan. Patisipe nan pwojè Adopte yon Fanmi nou an. Pran kèk tan jou jedi yo pou vin lapriyè nan pye Sen Sakreman an (aprè lanmès 7:00 nan maten an pou rive 6:00 pm). Itilize ti liv refleksyon Lavan nou yo, ki disponib nan tout pòt nan legliz nou an. Se pou tan Lavan an mete nou pi pre Seyè a. Rosary Altar Society News Avèk afeksyon, Msgr. OLS Students Share Their Joy Our 60 th Anniversary year has brought with it a year-long celebration of service to our community. Mrs. Denise Gutierrez, the parent of an OLS alumni and a current eighth grade student, is spearheading a year of service. The students at Our Lady of Sorrows school have service to others as a regular part of their school day. They understand what it is to share, volunteer and support others. Each month this school year, we are organizing extra projects that allow us to share the OLS spirit with others. Our Thanksgiving project was planned with a team spirit in mind! After lunch one afternoon, each middle school child in Grade 6 made their way to the cafeteria. Waiting for them, was a class of eager kindergarteners! Each sixth grade student found that special kindergarten student, and together they made placemats and loving messages to add to the Meals on Wheels program. Imagine the joy their efforts will bring to the home of a shut-in as they open their Thanksgiving meal delivered by Meals-on-Wheels! Think about the many gifts this project has brought to our own OLS students. What better way to learn as a young child than on the hand of a loving middle school "older brother or sister"! Our middle school students gain such important life lessons of how to be gentle, how to teach, and how to guide young children. We are building a beautiful world each time we offer our children these priceless opportunities to grow and thrive. Try Our Lady of Sorrows School on for size! It makes such a wonderful fit for some many children. Our world becomes enriched each time a student touches the life of someone else. Find out more about the magic. 5

9 Adopt-a-Family, Adopt-a-Child for Christmas The Social Justice/Social Concerns Committee once again invites you to share your love and your treasure this Christmas with others in need, and in so doing, keep alive the memory of Deacon Joe Malloy and his wonderful model of Christian discipleship. EASY STEPS TO ADOPTING A FAMILY/CHILD FOR CHRISTMAS 1. Sign Up Online at the parish website (on the website go to Ministries Outreach Social Justice Adopt-a-Family to access form) or fill out the form below including the number of children to whom you can give. Please PRINT all information legibly. Place the paper form in the collection basket or drop it off at the rectory. 2. We will send you your adopted family information, including the name, age, size and gift wish of each child. Requests made online will be answered as soon as possible (1-2 days); whereas, requests made by paper may take up to 1 week to arrive in the US Mail. Please be patient. 3. Please buy (1) toy and (1) item of clothing for each child. Shop for the child as you would for a child in your own family, you do not have to buy the gift that is listed. 4. Please wrap the gifts and label them with the child s name and the assigned donation number. 5. Bring the gifts to the OLS School cafeteria on Sunday, December 13, from noon to 2:30 p.m. THOUGHTS TO KEEP IN MIND Gift wishes are just that the wishes of children who watch the same commercials and want the same things your children and grandchildren want. Some may be too expensive for your budget. DO NOT feel obligated to buy anything that is above your means. You may substitute any suitable, age appropriate gift in place of the Gift Wish. Follow your head and your heart. There are many sites on the internet that list age-appropriate toys. We ask that you do not ask for children of a particular age or sex. Please open your heart to all the children in need. Don t have time to shop or wrap but still want to share with a child this Christmas? Consider donating a gift card to Wal-Mart or Target to give as a gift to a needy teenager. Gift cards can be dropped in the collection basket or at the rectory in an envelope marked ADOPT-A-FAMILY Gift Card Donation.
