By taking the time to change and wear clothing different from what we wear to a ballgame or the supermarket, we remind ourselves that we re gathering on Sunday for something more important, namely, to offer the unbloody sacrifice of Jesus on Calvary for the forgiveness of our sins. Kindly refrain from wearing shorts, tank tops, bare midriffs, flip-flops, bathing suits and other beach clothing, T-shirts with inappropriate images or sayings, or any similar apparel. This will keep our Masses solemn and dignified. 7 St. Ann s Parish 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time July 5, 2015 Question: I frequently get people saying to me, I don t need to go to church on Sunday to pray: I can pray just as well at home in my room. How do you respond to them? Answer: I guess the first thing to say is that they are correct: you do not have to go to church in order to pray. You could pick up a CD or DVD by one of the greatest Catholic evangelists in the world today and listen to it as much as you d like in your own room. You can play a CD of whatever style music you like in your room for as long as you like. You can pray as much as you want and end whenever you feel like it in private. But one thing you have to go to church to do is receive the Eucharist. No one can receive the Eucharist in their room praying by themselves. The Eucharist is the very means by which we participate in the suffering death and resurrection of Jesus and actually have our sins forgiven. That is the most important part of prayer of all: having our sins forgiven in the Eucharist. Praying at home is great, but without attending Mass and receiving the Eucharist and being together with our community, receiving the support of our fellow Christians as one body as Christ intended us to do, we are missing the whole point. It s like having icing without the cake. The Eucharist is the means by which we actually plug into the death and resurrection of Christ, the means by which the merits of his sacrifice are made real for us, and how we enter into total union with Him, which is exactly what going to heaven means. So saying we have faith without receiving the sacraments is like having a computer without a power plug: it may look nice, but it is really powerless. Volunteers Needed The Pastoral Care Department at St. Joseph s Nursing Home is looking for volunteers to help transport their Nursing Home residents to and from Sunday Mass in the chapel within the facility.
