7 St. Ann s Parish 28th Sunday in Ordinary Time October 14, 2018 There s an old saying that says, don t worry about the dirt in the soil; flowers still grow there. We can see that in the lives of the new saints that are being canonized by Pope Francis this weekend in Rome: Pope St. Paul VI & St. Oscar Romero. While much is publicly known about Pope Paul VI, little is common knowledge about Romero, and I d like to share a few highlights of his life today. Pope Paul VI himself appointed Romero as Archbishop of San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, which experienced a bloody civil war during the 1980s. While at first a meek and humble bishop, he was traumatized by the murder of one of his closest friends, Fr. Rutilio Grande, by forces in the war. This galvanized him into a fearless defender of the rights of the poor who were being ruthlessly exterminated and the rights of basic human decency. Priests, religious, and laypeople who worked with the poor were being put to death by the thousands. Warned by many of the danger of speaking against the government, Romero put his life on the line with weekly broadcasts in defense of the poor and innocent victims of the civil war. Pope Paul VI, in a meeting with him on June 21, 1978, told him, I understand your difficult work. It is a work that can be misunderstood, you need to have a lot of patience and fortitude. I do know that not everyone thinks like you, it is difficult in the circumstances in your country to have that unanimity of thought, however, proceed with courage, with patience, with strength, with hope." This the Archbishop did. Finally, when the forces he opposed saw him as too dangerous, he was assassinated on March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass in an infirmary. His funeral was attended by 250,000 people! Today he and Pope Paul VI are being canonized saints! St. Oscar Romero is a reminder to us that, during trying times, we could take the easy way out and sit back and be silent, but he knew he had a duty before God to defend his flock, and he did, even to the point of giving his life for his people. May we learn from St. Oscar Romero never to cower at the threats of evil people, but always stand firm in defense of the faith, of the poor, and of the most innocent and helpless among us who need a powerful voice to speak for them. God has blessed our church with two new saints today. May they be our models and our inspiration now and always! Losing a child under any circumstance is terrible. Focusing on the spirituality of the grieving process can help tremendously. The Emmaus Ministry: for parents whose children of any age have died by any cause, no matter how long ago.
