7 St. Ann s Parish 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time September 2, 2018 I find it helpful from time to time to review a few of the basics of our faith. I ll be happy to use my column to address any topics you find helpful. Today s column was prompted by several questions I have recently been asked to answer. I think that, if one person is thinking that way, there are probably many others who are wondering about the same thing. The question was about cohabitation by a man and woman who are not married. When is it a sin? Great! Let s start with the obvious: a brother and sister share an apartment: perfectly acceptable. They are brother and sister and under normal circumstances will never be tempted to be involved in any sexual sin with each other. How about two people who are just good friends? While technically there may be no sin involved, it does give public scandal. People would naturally assume their relationship is not platonic. It is further complicated if even one of them holds romantic feelings toward the other, or if these feelings begin to develop afterwards. Living together in that situation would be what we call a near occasion of sin a situation where we can reasonably assume there could be a temptation to sin with the other, and by living together, they would be providing an easy opportunity to fall into sin that would not occur if they lived separately. That must be avoided; in fact, in the Act of Contrition we firmly resolve to avoid the near occasion of sin. Since the sexual act is the seal of the covenant of Marriage, to engage in any sexual act alone or with someone else to whom we are not married is a desecration of the Sacrament and must always be avoided. Any such sexual sin should be confessed sacramentally before one approaches to receive Holy Communion. Obviously, it is not permissible even if the couple is engaged. While they may be engaged, they are not yet married, and that would constitute the sin of fornication. If one or the other person involved in the act is married to someone else, that is called adultery. That is forbidden by the 6 th Commandment and reaffirmed by Jesus Himself. I did once hear of someone who was divorced civilly saying they could engage in sexual activity with someone else because they didn t marry the person. Sin takes place whenever sexual activity takes place between people who are not married. Whether it is fornication (neither is married) or adultery (at least one is married to someone else), it is still a serious sin that must be confessed. If you are in any such situation and were unaware that you were in sin, don t be afraid! Just come to confession and, if you are willing to do everything in your power to avoid the sin in the future, you will receive Jesus absolution and His peace. Contemplative Prayer Retreat September 24 th - 27 th Marianist Family Retreat Center located in Cape May Point, NJ (609) This retreat is intended for those interested in a contemplative prayer experience. First-timers as well as those who are familiar and experienced with this type of retreat are all welcomed. Our time will be filled with prayer experiences, quiet personal time, special liturgies and daily Eucharist. The cost of the retreat is $ per person (includes: meals, room and program). For more information: Family Day - Making Everyday Special is the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse s initiative to promote simple, everyday things parents can do to build a strong, healthy relationship with their kids that prevents future drug use. Choir rehearsal resumes on Wednesday, September 12 th. Children in second-to-eighth grade meet in the Main Church at 6:30PM. High Schoolers and Adults meet at 7:30PM. New members are encouraged. Please see Mr. Loman with any questions. Men s Holy Hour On Friday, September 7 th, the Men s Holy Hour will take place in the Chapel for Eucharist Adoration. Adoration will be from 8:00PM to 8:45PM. We will then move from the Chapel to Fr. Anthony Hall to listen to this month s guest speaker, Fr. Matthew Janeczko, Pastor of Sacred Heart parish in Yonkers, and is also the Chaplain for the Yonkers Police Department. He will speak about the 1 st Commandment and the vocation of the Priesthood.
