It is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels. In many Catholic and Episcopal denominations, worship services on Palm Sunday include a procession of the faithful carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. 3 Holy Thursday is the Christian holy day falling on the Thursday before Easter. It commemorates the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles as described in the Canonical gospels. This meal is the last time Jesus spends with his disciples and he tells them what is to happen. Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. It is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. Holy Saturday is the day after Good Friday. It commemorates the day that Jesus body lay in the tomb.

Lectors, please stop by and pick up your copy. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY REFLECTION March 25, 2018 The essence of discipleship is that we carry his cross. Disciples go wherever the Master goes. Coming to understand who Jesus is, his mission, and how that relates to us his disciples is not an easy task; it takes a lifetime. Like Jesus, to be faithful followers by taking up our cross means we will feel this in the depths of our humanity: we will suffer, we will lose heart, we will cry out to God to take life s miserable lot away from us. But also like Jesus we have divine life which gives us the strength to carry our cross. It is divine life pulsating within us which we first receive at our baptism that raises up our humanity enabling us to be faithful disciples carrying our crosses. (Living Liturgy, p.98) 4

BAPTISM CLASS In preparation for a child s baptism, the parent(s) must be registered and attending Mass at OLA for at least 2 months. Registration may be completed in the parish office prior to the child s birth. ALUMINUM CAN COLLECTION In order to take care of God s earth and raise needed funds for new library/classroom books, OLA School will be collecting aluminum cans at the Saturday Vigil Mass and all Sunday Masses. There is a large blue recycle bin next to the large NW gate of OLA Hall. Just bag your cans and toss them over the fence and into the recycle bin. We are also entering a recycle challenge. Help us to win the State Challenge again! 5

6 PASSION The contrast between the processional reading in today s liturgy and the proclamation of the Passion is striking. We are given a glimpse of how profoundly the word of God is fulfilled in Jesus. First he must be hailed as the Messiah, the One who is to come. He must be acknowledged by all, though they do not know what they are saying. They think he is the promised king, a worldly king of the Jews who will free them from the Roman occupation. They do not yet understand, even the disciples, exactly where this triumphal procession is leading. In our lives, we too do not know where we are going. It is in faith that we can follow Christ wherever he may lead us, trusting that death is not the end, nor evil the victor. LITURGY CORNER LA PASIÓN El contraste entre la lectura procesional de la liturgia de hoy y la proclamación de la Pasión es asombroso. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION For many centuries, Christian pilgrims have longed to walk in the footsteps of Jesus, and on Passion Sunday the eyes of the world are on the Via Dolorosa, the Road of Sorrows, in Jerusalem. As soon as it became safe for Christians to worship in public in the fourth century, a way was marked out. It was changed a few times over the years, and today s usual route was sketched by the Franciscans six hundred years ago, although Anglicans and Byzantines have their own unique detours. Friday is the most favored day, although it is crowded then. Almost everyone begins at the Lion s Gate in the Muslim Quarter, and ends at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It s less than a quarter mile, but it threads its way through crowded markets with souvenir shops and fast-food snacks. There are, just as in your parish church, fourteen stations along the way. The exact spots are not known, but what matters is the pilgrim s unique ability to see even an ordinary road in a teeming city as something more than meets the eye.
