3 Dear Fellow Pilgrims, On the shelf behind me as I write this letter is a lightning rod that was mounted on the roof of my parents house throughout my childhood. I found it while cleaning out my father s workshop and quickly rescued the artifact. Its original purpose was entirely functional; it would have attracted lightning and grounded the powerful current, thereby protecting the house from fire. Its new purpose is entirely metaphorical; it grounds me. I like the idea of this beacon of home, the very roots of my origin, standing stoically on the shelf behind my head. I need the daily reminder of the soil in which I sprouted and the wood of which I am hewn. Being the type of person who is always overextended and often easily distracted, I need the grounding. This is what home does (or at least ought to do) for us; it gives us a place to be rooted, a place to start. I ve been thinking a lot about home lately, partially because I ve been spending my weekends getting my parents home ready to sell, and partially because I ve been working to get a homework help center for homeless high school kids off the ground. At the moment, I m experiencing a little spiritual homesickness. As I spend a third consecutive weekend working at my parents house in Marshfield, I find myself longing for my SEAS home. I miss the smiles and warmth of our faith community. It grounds me and gives me a place to start. I am a bit surprised as I discover just how much I need that. Yes, there are Catholic churches in Marshfield, but being a guest at someone else s table is far different from gathering around your own family s table. What happens when a tree is not firmly rooted, not anchored in healthy soil? Why, the storms of life rip it from its moorings. How often do people, ourselves included, feel spiritually lost, confused or disoriented. Battered by trials of angry winds, we may be tempted to give up on our faith, tempted to surrender to the swell, when what we really need is to dig deeper into the soil of our spiritual home. Without that home, we grab for whatever false security we can find image, materialism, addictions and so forth. Of course, there is a difference between going to church and having a spiritual home, just as there is a difference between living in a house and having a loving home. Merely going through the motions doesn t cut it. In a true spiritual home, everyone feels welcomed, valued and enriched. Michelle and I have been rooted in our SEAS home for almost twenty-five years. We have raised our children here. This is the spot of earth on which they were baptized, received Holy Communion, and experienced forgiveness. Through it all, you have welcomed, valued and enriched my family. You have grounded all three of our sons in rich soil. Thank you. Peace, Deacon Steve Rev. Msgr. 4 BAPTISM CONGRATULATIONS Camden Michael Williquette Son of Brad and Ashley Alexandra Davia Nielsen Daughter of Stephanie Barb Hinnendael Barb has been a member for 29 years. She is involved in music ministry, and has been active in this ministry since she was in grade school. Barb welcomes, values and enriches us at many Masses by her piano playing, and she also gives piano lessons. She believes that the more involved we are in the parish, the more we all become part of Christ s family, and form valuable and enriching friendships with each other. Adult Confirmation Candidates Two candidates have completed adult confirmation classes at SEAS and are scheduled to be confirmed at Saint Francis Xavier Cathedral on May 24. Please pray for Sean Vandersteen and Tara Flynn (brother and sister) that they be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit, be given strength to serve the Body of Christ and continue on their path of discipleship. 6 Discipleship Through Prayer Over the last three (3) weeks, we ve learned about and participated in growing as disciples through prayer, which is simply having a conversation with God. To review, our SEAS mission is To Grow as Disciples in Christ And to Grow Disciples. The first step in doing this is to build a relationship with Jesus Christ, primarily through prayer. A few weeks ago, Father Paul explained the Preparation of the Altar, which has two main components: Gift and Prayer. The Presentation of the Gifts offers us another opportunity to pray for all that God has given us. The time we have been given is a gift from God, and how we use that time is our gift to Him. You were given the opportunity to reflect and assess how you spend your time in prayer. This weekend we will complete the cycle by making an intentional commitment to spend time in prayer by completing a card and returning it as part of our offering. (If you re unable to return the card this weekend, you may bring it next weekend.) By doing this, we welcome Jesus into our lives, and our lives become enriched by our time with Him. Consequently, we too have the ability to welcome and enrich others in Christ. As a parish, it would be nice if we could all Step Up and make a commitment to the time we will spend in prayer. The Mass is a mystery, but a mystery that Fr. Paul is helping us unlock as he continues to break it down for us this weekend. The Mass has been highly developed and finely tuned over hundreds of years. It is a celebration of a miracle and is meant to enrich us in Christ every week. It s time to get excited about the Mass. Not an emotional high but the type of excitement that helps us delve deeper into the mystery of Christ made present in the Mass.
