3 There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle. ~Albert Einstein Dear Parishioners, As we celebrate the miracle birth of Christ in this Christmas season, we are reminded of the miracles that happen so often in the lives of people. The following story is about an amazing miracle that happened to two people whose lives had nearly been destroyed by sheer evil and tragedy. The author of the story is a man named Paul Deutschman. A man named Marcel Sternberger, a native of Hungary, always took the 9:09 train from his home in Queens, New York, into the city. On January 10, 1948, he boarded the train as usual, but suddenly decided he would visit a Hungarian friend who lived in Brooklyn who was ill. After visiting his friend, he boarded a Manhattan-bound subway for his Fifth Avenue office. The only seat left to him was next to a young man who looked to be about 30 years old with sad, haunted eyes. He was reading a Hungarian newspaper, so Marcel addressed him in Hungarian asking about the news. Instead of talking about the news, Marcel learned the young man s name was Bela Paskin, and that he was a refugee newly established in New York after surviving the Holocaust. He had been informed that all of his family had been taken to Auschwitz and had all perished. Marcel found Bela s story to be very familiar. He had just met a young Hungarian woman who had been from the same town as Bela. All of her family had also perished in the gas chambers at Auschwitz. She had been liberated by the Americans and was brought to America on the first boatload of displaced persons, and was now living close by in New York City. Marcel had been so moved by her story and wanted to introduce her to other people he knew so he had written down her name, address and phone number. He looked at the name and asked Bela, Was your wife s name Marya? Bela s face went white as he answered that it was her name. Marcel and Bela got off the subway train and found a phone. Marcel dialed the number. It rang and rang but eventually a young woman s voice answered. The phone was a communal one in the hallway and Marya never got calls, so had never answered the phone. That day no one else was home so Marya answered it. It was soon confirmed that this Marya was indeed Bela s wife. Marcel gave Bela the address and later learned that this husband and wife s reunion was so poignant and electric that neither one could recall much about it as it seemed like a dream. Miracles do happen. As the Christmas season continues and a new year unfolds, may we all be blessed with health, happiness and the ability to look for and expect the miracles in our own lives, both large and small. Happy New Year, Gloria Nolan

4 We extend our condolences to the family and friends of our sister in the parish family who recently passed away. EUCHARISTIC HOLY HOUR Wednesday January 3, 7-8pm here at SEAS in our Trinity Chapel Join us! What is this love in which we must believe? It is the love of Jesus Christ; the love which He manifests to us in the Eucharist, a love that is Himself, a living and infinite love Jesus tells us that He loves us, that He instituted His Sacrament only out of love for us Our Lord sends neither Angels nor ministers to assure us of His love; He comes in person. Love will have no go-between. ~St. Peter Julian Eymard O Come, Let Us Adore Him! 2nd Friday for January 12 at Nativity of Our Lord 2270 S. Oneida St., Green Bay Options for Independent Living Presented by Kitty Barry 9am Mass 9:30am Continental Breakfast 10am Program Free program. All are invited to join us (you do not have to be a senior). Please RSVP by January 9 if you plan to attend. We need a count for the meal. The spiritual value of a single Mass is infinite, and is the greatest possible prayer of intercession. Celebrating the Mass for a specific intention can be of benefit to the faithful themselves and to so many other souls. By making an offering, (stipend) the faithful part with something that is their own and associate themselves more intimately with Christ who offers himself in the Blessed Sacrament. The usual offering for a Mass intention is $10. Weekday Mass intentions are available starting in January. Various weekend Mass intentions are available starting in March. If you are interested or would like additional information, please contact the parish office at This book giveaway at Christmas Masses was a big hit. Thank you to the parishioners who generously donated the funds for these books. When we pray for our needs or the needs of others, we are asking God to enter into our lives and the lives of others for healing and strength, mercy and forgiveness. At every Mass, we pray for the intentions we hold in our hearts and those written in our parish book of intentions. This book is located in the hospitality area in front of the Seton South Chapel near the smaller set of entrance doors. All are welcome to write prayer intentions in this book, and realize the power of many praying for and with you. TEXT SEASGB to with your smartphone to sign up to receive text messages from us. I, CST, am here hopping CST into 2018 with you. I hope your Christmas day was merry and bright, filled with family, friends, and a lot of love. I love the Christmas season. The music is filled with peaceful memories for me, which helps me relax and simply sit in the awe and wonder of the season. I also enjoy that Christmas is more than just one day it s a season. We begin with Jesus birth, and shortly after we celebrate the Holy Family. It s a time that reminds us of the importance of family in our own lives. Then we celebrate Mary, the mother of God, on January 1. I feel so blessed to be able to give her honor for her YES to God. I think about the sacrifices Mary made in order to follow God s will and bring us the Savior of the world. Then comes the Epiphany where the three Magi come to visit Jesus and bring gold, frankincense, and myrrh. What precious gifts for a King! And, let us not forget the last week of the Christmas season, the Baptism of the Lord. What a beautiful reminder of the importance of our own baptism. For in our baptism, we were anointed with the Holy Chrism as priest, prophet, and king. In other words, we were entrusted to go out In our baptism, we were anointed with the Holy Chrism and entrusted to go out and be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. and be the hands and feet of Christ in the world. So, how do we take the Christmas season and apply it to our lives throughout the year? I might challenge you to go back further into the liturgical year, and focus on Advent the time of preparation and joy for the coming of Christ. What sticks out to me in Advent is Mary, the mother

6 of God. How might we be brave like Mary and be willing to say Yes to God s will? How will we know that what we are called to do is of God s will and not our own? How might we sacrifice ourselves for others throughout the year? I pray that as you journey through this Christmas season and into 2018, that you might keep Mary close to your heart. Pray for her intercession, and keep her memory alive, so that you too might be able to follow the will of God at all times. Happy New Year friends! May Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus be alive in your hearts throughout the entire year. We are collecting McDonald s and Subway $5 and $10 gift cards for the guests at the homeless center. You can include them with the offertory at any Mass. In the near future, you ll be able to purchase these gift cards through Scrip in these amounts. Thank you. Final Report This annual diocesan-wide collection took place at the end of October. You generously gifted $5,306 for the Propagation of the Faith, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Thank you for helping the poor experience God s love and mercy.
