3 Dear Friends, As we enter this Lenten season, we are reminded of the power of our Catholic disciplines of prayer, fasting and generosity. Prayer invites us to deepen our personal relationship with Jesus Christ by making sure it is part of our daily lives. Prayer also asks us to deepen our concern for others and to commit to bringing their names and needs to God. Generosity reminds us the life we have been given is not about us. Instead, ours is a life to be lived for God and for the sake of those in need. As God has a special concern for the poor, the vulnerable, and the alien (immigrant), so too are we. The call to generosity asks that we give 10% of our time, our service and our materials goods to others. A way to be generous with our time or service is to find something to add on. Is there an area in the parish we as individuals or families can become involved in? Can we adopt a nursing home resident or elderly neighbor to visit? Could we use our cooking or baking skills to make a meal for the homeless shelter? Would we be willing to send an occasional card to one of our homebound parishioners? Are we willing to buy a few extra groceries for our area food pantries or to give to a family in need? The opportunity here is endless. Fasting can often be our least favorite discipline or the one we are willing to ignore, or go easy on. I know I ve been tempted some years to switch my area of fasting to one that is a little easier or more manageable. However it is important that we learn to say no to ourselves. It connects us more closely with the many throughout our world who do not have the food, warmth, wardrobe, or opportunity for recreation that we do. It helps us live in solidarity with others. It helps us remember the saying, Live simply so others may simply live. The Church calls us to fast from meat on the Fridays of Lent. Perhaps there are areas of consumerism or technology we could also include in our fast. Maybe God is calling us to let go of bad health habits or addictive behaviors. We might also be asked to fast from areas that keep us from expressing the joy and love of discipleship. A common recent list of fasting includes: Fast from anger and hatred. Ask God to help you see all as made in God s divine image and likeness. Fast from judging others. Remember everyone is carrying a story that includes some brokenness or pain. Fast from discouragement. Hold on to the promise that your life is in God s hands. Fast from complaining or jealousy. Recall instead the many blessings and moments of joy God has given you. Fast from resentment or bitterness. Work on truly forgiving any who may have hurt you. Fast from spending too much money or buying things that aren t truly necessary. Try to reduce your spending by 10% and give these savings to the poor. The blessing of our Lenten season of 40 days is that it can compel and propel us to focus once again on those three important areas of prayer, fasting and generosity. It invites us to personal growth in our relationship with God, others and ourselves. Hopefully, come Easter, some of these become permanent habits. All we need to do is begin and make one day, day one. Blessings, Sr. Marla Clercx Pastoral Leader
4 This letter is from one of the organizations that benefited from our Annual Christmas Masses Loose Change collection. Every month a group of our parishioners cooks a meal here in our kitchen and serves the meal at NEW Community Shelter. Our commitment and support are appreciated.

Every donation adds up and is appreciated. Strengthening Faith through Adult Faith Formation Programs This 24-Hour a Day Vigil Has Started Join the SEAS team on Fridays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on March 15, 22, 29, April 5, 12 or any other time you re available as this vigil is 24 hours a day at Planned Parenthood 2605 S. Oneida St., Ashwaubenon. When does life begin? At conception. We believe that God creates our soul at conception and that our soul is immortal. Greg Partamian is our parish s team leader. Join this growing movement, and pray with others for God s intervention in bringing about an end to abortion. We must protect life at all stages, especially the most vulnerable among us. If you can support this cause, please contact Greg at gregpartam@gmail.com. Recent history bears witness that if adults are not well-formed in the faith, the younger generations will lack formation as well. But with solid and vibrant adult faith formation programs, a personal relationship with Christ is better fostered among parishioners, the Sacraments begin to take on more relevance to everyday life, and the motivation to share the Good News with those outside the flock is awakened. From there, the good work of teaching (catechizing) children by our parish is reinforced by well-formed parents. In short, the benefits are incalculable! The adult faith formation program at the diocese assists our parish in bringing souls to Christ. Thanks to the Bishop s Appeal resources and curriculum are provided to our parish to advance the mission in forming adults through Christ. Year after year people look to the Church for inspiration and spiritual direction through life. If you haven t given a gift yet, please consider becoming one of the many Missionaries of Hope in our diocese. May we be blessed for our support of our parish and may we extend that love and service beyond our parish to our brothers and sisters in need through the Bishop s Appeal.
6 March 9 & 10, 2019 Bulletin Insert 2771 Oakwood Drive Green Bay, WI seas@seasgb.org ~The Jesus Prayer~ Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner. Jesus spent 40 days in physical and spiritual hunger and in real temptation. So will we. Whatever forms of fasting we take up this Lent, let s do it out of love. We need God s protection when we enter the Lenten desert. The Church doesn t ask us to go alone as Jesus did. We go together. This is where Jesus is with us. Be with us Lord, in our vulnerability. Adapted from Mary Marrocco s reflection in Living Faith. These books are available for you to take to your faith and life this Lent. They are in the hospitality area while supplies last. All are Invited to Join us for Engaging Young Catholics Money is being collected (cash or checks) in the basket on the bike near the ambo in the worship area. The below highlight Fridays in Lent and Good Friday. The Church no longer attempts to prescribe Lenten practices in detail. Fasting on Good Friday: Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are to fast. Fasting means having only one full meal and two small meals, if necessary, for strength. Abstaining from Meat all Fridays of Lent: Those from the age of 14 and up are to abstain from eating meat. Exclusions include pregnant or nursing women, the physically or mentally ill, and individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting. Precept: All Catholics are bound to confess their sins once a year. Easter Duty: All Catholics are bound by the obligation to receive Communion at least once a year. This precept is to be fulfilled during the Easter Season up to Trinity Sunday or anytime during the weeks of Lent. 9 Is there more to life than this? My guess is that either you have asked this question, or have been asked this question sometime in your life. It can be a hard question to answer. Even if we know the answer is yes, sometimes we don t know where to go after this question comes up. Alpha starts with this question. Alpha is an 11-week course that not only asks the question is there more to life, but also, who is Jesus, why did Jesus die, how can we have faith. Beyond these pivotal questions; Alpha is a great opportunity to meet other people who we can join in our faith journey. We start with a meal, watch an engaging video and have a great discussion. This is just in time for Lent! What better way to dive into these 40 days preparing to celebrate the Resurrection than learning more about our faith! We ve held Alpha Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings so we re going to have this one during the day. Spread the word and invite your family, friends, or neighbors who work 2 nd or 3 rd shift. Are you not sure if this is for you? Or do you have kids in our Faith Formation program, and don t want another night out of the house? We will be starting a Taste of Alpha. This will be during the Elementary Faith Formation class time on Wednesdays. Because of the shorter time, we won t be having a meal. and will cover the first 3 questions above with an opportunity to continue the course. We have had over 60 people participate in Alpha so far at the parish. All those who have gone through Alpha are invited to join us for our Alpha reunions where we continue our faith journey. - Kruth@seasgb.org.
