JOHN THE EVANGELIST 71 Murray Avenue, Goshen, New York (845) office@sjegoshen.org As noted here previously, our parish is sponsoring the parish mission in early June for our cluster, which includes St. Columba in Chester, St. Joseph s in Florida, and St. Stephen s in Warwick. Revive! Faith Every Day will take place over the course of three evenings Monday, June 5 through Wednesday, June 7 at 7:00pm in the church. The mission preacher is Fr. Kenan Peters, a Passionist priest who has been giving parish missions throughout the United States for nearly forty years. Every cluster throughout the Archdiocese is offering such a mission; some have already taken place, while others are still to come. There will be opportunity one evening for the sacrament of Penance, and the final night will conclude with the celebration of the Eucharist. I strongly encourage everyone to set aside as many of those evenings as possible for this time of spiritual renewal. For more information, please visit Last year, we invited those who were graduating from our local high schools to a particular Mass on the last Sunday of June, at which time they received a special blessing. We d like to do the same this year, but with a little extra. All of our parishioners who are graduating from Burke Catholic, GHS, or any other high school this June are invited to the 5:00pm Mass on Sunday, June 11 for the baccalaureate blessing. Afterward, there will be a barbecue in the yard behind the parish house. RSVP to the parish office ( ; office@sjegoshen.org) In my homily last Sunday, I quoted excerpts from a report by The National Study of Youth and Religion, which began in Several people asked for a copy, so I thought this might be a good springboard for further discussion about the topic (especially since these attitudes aren t necessarily restricted to young people). Sociologists paint American Christians as restless people who come to church for the same reasons people once went to diners: for someone to serve us who knows our name, for a filling stew that reminds us of home and makes us feel loved, even while it does a number on our spiritual cholesterol. [C]hurches seem to have offered teenagers a kind of diner theology : a bargain religion, cheap but satisfying, whose gods require little in the way of fidelity or sacrifice....diner theology is... [easy] to digest... So who can blame churches, really, for earnestly ladling this stew... filling us with an agreeable porridge about the importance of being nice, feeling good about yourself, and saving God for emergencies? Teenagers tend to view God as either a butler or a therapist, someone who meets their needs when summoned ( a cosmic lifeguard, as one youth minister put it) or who listens nonjudgmentally and helps youth feel good about themselves ( kind of like my guidance counselor, [according to one ninth grader]).
