5 + + + For as long as I can remember, my mother has been an election inspector. On the Tuesday after the first Monday every November (and many Primary Day s, too), she s up and out of the house in the dark of night, headed down the hill to the local firehouse, her assigned polling place for thirty-plus years. I vividly remember my father bringing us with him as he voted, as it gave us a chance to see our mother at work ; even more appealing was the fact that Election Day meant supper at McDonald s. This early exposure to the democratic process paid off when I was a student at St. Mary s School in Fishkill. Our social studies teacher, Miss Topf, expected us to watch the CBS Evening News each night and report back the next day; she was mightily impressed when I came in with one of the leftover posters from a voting machine after each election. Ginny Topf (who recently retired from St. Mary s after a 40-year career, and who continues to volunteer there) inculcated in us a love for the political process and the debate of great ideas. So it was that I thought people like Ronald Reagan, George Shultz, James Baker, Elizabeth Dole, and Tip O Neil, among many others, to be larger than life people of stature, for lack of a better term. Of course, as I got older, I came to understand that they re as imperfect as the rest of us. But to my young eyes and ears, they seemed to be about more than themselves, and could apparently navigate personal differences in the pursuit of the common good. I don t know when the train started to go off the rails (maybe it already was then, and I just didn t know it), but I think it s safe to say that politics is in a sorry state today; one look at the newspaper each day is ample evidence. It s challenging to find a story about candidates respectfully debating lofty visions and worthy ideas, which will only better the lives of all the people. Instead, we have headlines and articles more suited for the trashiest of supermarket tabloids. So what are we to do? Is it time to run up the white flag and surrender the high ideals on which our nation was founded to the forces of secularism, selfinterest, and the widely heralded but very misunderstood separation of church and state? Or do we as Catholics have an important and, I would suggest, urgently essential role to play in the process? In answer, I simply offer the example of the late Dennis Simmons, whom I came to know well in my previous assignment. When he was elected to the Orange County Legislature in 2010, he defeated an incumbent who, like himself, had long been involved in local politics. Their differences, however, were never personal; instead, they centered on issues that were of genuine concern to their constituents. Dennis was a faithful and zealous man who believed that public service indeed meant serving the people; I don t think there was a person in western Orange County who didn t have his cell number, and wouldn t hesitate to use it. He took the job seriously; when the first proposal came up for the privatization of Valley View several years ago, he prayed and agonized over his vote. He was appointed commissioner of jurors in early 2015, a public service that was only cut short by the diagnosis of cancer, which ultimately led to his death two months ago. Dennis was unabashedly and unequivocally pro-life. He understood and interiorized the clear teaching of the Church, especially as it relates to abortion and euthanasia: The inalienable right to life of every innocent human individual is a constitutive element of a civil society and its legislation (Catechism of the Catholic Church 2273). After all, the way a society treats its most vulnerable members those at the beginning and those at the end of life says a great deal about what it holds to be sacred. Dennis spent himself helping people with problems ranging from homelessness to medical insurance issues in other words, those in the middle. He recognized his service to be part of a much larger whole, because the faith he professed permeated every aspect of his life. He d put it all together and it made sense. I would suggest that s the kind of Catholic witness needed today in the public arena. The Church has much to offer, but in a seemingly well-intentioned effort to get along with everyone, we ve let the secularists have their way in keeping faith out of politics. It s high time we start to reverse the tide; that s only going to happen if we get it started at the grassroots level. Faithfully your priest, Fr. George Hafemann Page St. John
6 The Rosary for Converts Continued from last week. The Way of Christ, this Incarnate Word, led from the Father through his Mother, and as Christ trods back to the Father, we are caught up in the slipstream of the movement of his love. Mary lives and prays right in the quiet center of that grand movement, and the Rosary allows us to share her vantage point, to enter into the Way of Christ alongside her who shares it most intimately. This vantage point is, after all, not a mere point of observation, but a point of participation. Mary watches the drama from on the stage. In seeing the Light, she shines with Light. To borrow a phrase from the playwright Eugene O Neill, in seeing the secret, she becomes the secret. This reality takes a poignant form in the iconographic motif called Hodegetria, She Who Points the Way. In this icon, Our Lady holds and gestures to the Christ Child. Here is the Way, she says. Here is your purpose, your meaning, your joy. Through her gaze, in this icon and in the Rosary, we can not only see, but live, the mysterious Way of Christ more perfectly. We too, in seeing the secret, can become the secret. The Rosary is, then, not something to be feared, not an adjunct to be awkwardly tolerated. It is a step of the Way, a movement of the music, a grammar in discourse of grace. It is a door to the depths of the Sacred Heart, and it hums with the echoes of the mysteries behind. May we especially we converts learn to open that door with a bit more alacrity. David Michael Phelps works as a writer, documentary producer, and literature professor. As a producer and writer he has worked with Courage, St. Michael's Abbey, 10 West Studios, the Acton Institute, and a number of other production firms. His work includes For the Life of the World: Letters to the Exiles, Vineyard of Light, Our Great Exchange, Desire of the Everlasting Hills, and various short-form commercial and non-profit projects.
