4 The Catholic War Veterans of Post 1923 are sponsoring a communion breakfast on Sunday, April 10, 2016 following the 10:30am Mass. Tickets are $12. Catholic Charities Community Services of Orange County is hosting the tenth annual Celebration of Charity on Thursday, April 14, 2016 at 5:30pm at Anthony s Pier 9 in New Windsor. Among this year s honorees are Bishop Dominick Lagonegro, who is well known to all of us in Orange County. 5 for representing St. John s well this year. I had the opportunity to watch quite a few games, and was pleased to see that our children are learning valuable lessons in sportsmanship and fair play not to mention improving their skills! Of our seven CYO teams, six qualified for the Orange County CYO playoffs; four of them played in championship games. Two of our teams, the sixth grade boys red team and the fifth grade boys team, won their games, and were qualified to play in the state tournament. Off the court, our CYO teams were a great help in setting up McCaffrey Hall for Christmas Mass, and also raised money for both Catholic Charities and the Hudson Valley Food Bank. Our school teams, which play in the Orange County Parochial School League, were equally successful. The JV girls team went undefeated, and won the OCPSL championship; the varsity boys took home the championship trophy as well. In cheerleading, our pep squad received the second degree of excellence, while our JV cheerleaders won the championship and received the first degree of excellence. In addition, two members of St. John School s Class of 2012, Bryana McCartney and Michael Weiss, won two of the three OCPSL scholarships Bryana for cheerleading, Michael for basketball. The essays that each of them wrote are solid proof that the lessons they learned at SJS are bearing fruit; we have good reason to be proud of them! Cardinal Dolan hosts an annual celebration for those celebrating their golden wedding jubilees. This year, there will be two Masses at St. Patrick s Cathedral one on Saturday, June 25 at 1:30pm, the other on Sunday, June 26 at 2:00pm. Jubilarians receive three tickets for reserved seating (two for the couple, one for a family member/friend); additional non-ticketed seating is available for families and guests. Any couples celebrating their fiftieth anniversary this year, and who are interested in taking part, are asked to contact the parish office no later than Friday, April Several months ago, I made reference to the fact that we would be examining our Mass schedule, with an eye to making any adjustments this July. Fr. Peter and I have been discussing this almost since the day I arrived here; subsequent conversations have included the parish staff, the parish council, and others. While I will write more extensively on this topic next week, what we re looking at is reducing the number of Masses on Sunday morning from four to three, and moving the Mass in Spanish to Saturday evening (following the 5:00pm Mass). The Sunday morning schedule we ve contemplated is 8:00am, 10:00am, and 12:00pm, though those could be moved up thirty minutes to 7:30am, 9:30am, and 11:30am. (The 5:00pm Sunday Mass remains unchanged.) Having been through this in my previous parish, I can attest that nothing quite raises the ire of parishioners like a change to the Mass schedule. That being said, if we don t do this now, we re simply putting off the inevitable (again, I ll offer a much fuller explanation next week). In the meantime, if anyone has a preference or reasonable suggestion regarding the Sunday morning schedule, please feel free to drop me a note. 6 BIBLE BASICS 8: JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS Fr. Peter Heasley Over the past few weeks, we have been moving through the various parts of the Book of Genesis: the Primeval History, with the stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and the Flood, and others; the Abraham Cycle, and the Isaac and Jacob Cycle. None of these stories, or cycles, ends neatly; there is always some overlap, as in reality the stories of fathers overlap with those of their sons. In the Jacob Cycle, there is a long insertion, the story of Joseph and His Brothers, the other sons of Jacob. The fate of a father has never rested so surely on that of his son, as here Jacob depends on Joseph for survival. The mention of Jacob s passing comes only a few verses before that of Joseph. Pentateuch GENESIS Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy LAW Historical Books Joshua Judges Ruth I and II Samuel I and II Kings The Book of Genesis 1-11: The Primeval History 12-25: The Story of Abraham 25-36: Isaac and Jacob 37-50: JOSEPH AND HIS BROTHERS The story of Joseph is a long, elegant, and tightly knit story, so much so that scholars think it came out of a later tradition. Indeed, there is much resemblance to the story of Daniel: both are young when they become courtiers of a foreign regime, Joseph in Egypt and Daniel in Babylon; both interpret dreams for their kings; both exhibit wisdom in the form of virtue, overcoming temptations; both survive various afflictions, Joseph in a cistern and in prison, Daniel in a lions den and in a fiery furnace. A key difference emerges from this, in that while Joseph is able to save his people by bringing them down to the foreign land, to Daniel God reveals his ultimate rescue, the resurrection of the dead. The story of Joseph opens in Genesis 37 with his first two dreams, those of the sheaves in the field and the stars in the sky. Jacob and the other sons interpret these dreams prophetically, however doubtful they are of bowing to Joseph. These dreams become a self-fulfilling prophecy, as their interpretation leads to the very situation in which Joseph s brothers bow to him. They sell him into slavery. In Genesis 38, we hear of Judah and Tamar, a story that seems to have nothing to do with Joseph. However, we get a glimpse into the character of Judah, and the story contains very similar language to what has preceded. Then, in Genesis 39, we hear a story about Joseph overcoming sexual temptation, unlike his brother Judah. This, however, leads him to prison, where he nevertheless begins his successful run in governance. Following this, Joseph interprets pharaoh s dream, and saves the Egyptian people from famine (Gen 40 41). This leads to Jacob s sending his sons down to Egypt for food, a situation of which Joseph takes secret advantage until he cannot control his emotions anymore (in fact, Joseph weeps several times in this story) (Gen 42 46). Finally, Jacob and his sons settle in Goshen. There, Jacob blesses his united family (Gen 49) and, at the mention of Joseph s death, the biblical author assures us that God would lead his people out of Egypt. That, as we will see, is under much different circumstances. Page St. John
