3 This Thursday, December 8, is the SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION a holy day of obligation. Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 5:15pm, and on Thursday at 6:30am, 9:00am, 12:05pm and 7:00pm. ST. JOHN S GIVING TREE The Giving Tree will be in the Church from November 26 th - December 4 th. During this time you may take the ornaments and purchase the gift(s) written on the tag. There will be more than one gift written on the tag you may purchase one or more, whichever you are comfortable with. All gifts need to be returned no later than Sunday, December 11 th to the Church. 4 The 27 TH ANNUAL NATIONAL NIGHT OF PRAYER FOR LIFE begins in the chapel at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 8 th and concludes at 1:00 a.m. on Friday, December 9 th. The National Night of Prayer for Life is a prayer service consisting of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the holy rosary, Divine Mercy chaplet, litanies, and silent prayer. It was on the feast of the Immaculate Conception (then celebrated on December 9 th ) that Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas and the unborn, first appeared to St. Juan Diego. The National Night of Prayer for Life bridges these two feasts to honor Our Blessed Mother, and prays through her intercession for the establishment of a culture of life, protection of the Church from persecution, and the revival of our land. 5 Last weekend, we had the joy of welcoming Deacon Kareem Smith, who will be with us on weekends from now through April Because he still has a few months of seminary left before ordination to the priesthood, there will be limited times when Kareem will not be here; that includes this weekend and next. However, he will be with us for Christmas and Easter, so everyone will have opportunity to get to know him. I m also happy to welcome Fr. James Hess, a Carmelite priest who has recently moved to St. Albert s Priory in Middletown after working in Pittsburgh for several years. Fr. Jim maintains an active ministry preaching retreats, but has very graciously offered to assist us, both on Sundays and weekdays, as his schedule permits As you know, the archdiocese is split into deaneries (formerly called vicariates ); it so happens that Orange County is a deanery unto itself. It s a great blessing that the priests and deacons in the county work well together; that incudes covering for each other when needed. This week, in fact, several neighboring priests came to assist us with confessions for the students in both the religious education program and the school. It all evens out, as Fr. Jeff and I assist at other parishes with the same needs. That kind of collaboration is increasingly necessary, because our ranks are thinning faster than many realize. Just recently, two pastors in Orange County have had to spend several weeks off the job as they each recuperate from major surgeries. Every time that happens, the archdiocesan priest personnel office has to scramble to find coverage for those parishes; that s especially urgent when the pastor is the only priest assigned to the parish. I m told that, right now, there are a handful of parishes in need of pastors, for which there just aren t any priests available. also points to the absolute necessity for all of us to pray for priestly vocations, and to do everything we can to encourage young men to consider this path The celebration of wedding anniversaries is a great joy, but it can be a painful reminder for those who have suffered through a divorce. St. John s hosts a group for the divorced and separated, which had been meeting monthly. If interested in learning more, please contact the coordinator, Helen Piltman, at Catholic Charities Community Services also offers a wonderful service called the Parish Counseling Network (PCN). Here s the description, straight from the website: Parishioners have access to short term professional counseling at convenient locations throughout the archdiocese through a Parish Counseling Network developed by Catholic Charities. The Network offers more than 125 licensed counseling professionals to help parishioners through issues and crises that can be successfully addressed by brief counseling support such as marital problems, raising children, eldercare, job loss or bereavement. Working from private offices, counselors are experienced with an array of difficulties and diverse clientele. Many of practitioners are bi -lingual in Spanish and English. I have been sending parishioners to the PCN for nearly nine years. The director, Laura Brovich, has been especially helpful when I ve needed to connect someone with a very specific type of counselor. If you or a family member is in need of counseling, make this your first stop; Fr. Jeff and I are able to make referrals, and are happy to do so. Faithfully your priest, Fr. 6 Happenings at St. John School To Know God To Love God To Serve God Celebrating Thanksgiving The seventh grade led the entire school in a Living Rosary prayer service prior to the Thanksgiving Feast. The class took turns reciting the decades of the Rosary and representing each bead of the Rosary. McCaffrey Hall was set up as a large dining room. Parent volunteers arose early to cook turkeys and prepare food. There were many delicious foods including turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing and corn. Pie, pudding, and jello were served for dessert. The Pre-K class came dressed as turkeys. The Kindergarten class enjoyed wearing Native American attire and the First Graders represented the Pilgrims. In addition to enjoying a Thanksgiving feast together, each class collected items for families in need. Thanksgiving meal baskets were assembled and delivered to House on the Hill.
