Bishops in Mission: John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, and Graham Dow, retired Bishop of Carlisle, will lead a Mission in the Diocese of Liverpool, from Thursday 7th to Sunday 10th March. During that time they will be visiting our Deanery with a team of eight assistants, and there are plans afoot for a general event in Earlestown on the Friday, and an event at Bent's Garden Centre on the Sunday. The overall title of the Mission will be "Tell, Serve, Give" and there will be a number of other events happening during that extended weekend. You'll find a provisional programme in this magazine. We are encouraged to pray for this important initiative, and to support it in any way we can. Sunday 3rd February we'll keep as Candlemas, when we remember the time when Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus (now just 40 days old) to the temple to present him before God. Today, when children are brought to church to be baptised they are traditionally given a candle and told to shine as a light in the

world. Lit from the Paschal Candle, these candles remind us that Christ came to be the light of the world. We'll be glad to welcome the children and staff from our own Church School to join us in the Eucharist at 10am on that day, and together ask for the light of Christ to be present in each one of our lives. If you'd like to, you'd be welcome to join us. St Valentine's Supper - Friday 15th February - Please see displayed at the back of church the revised menu (including vegetarian options). Numbers will be limited to 60 so please add your name to the list. Tickets are 25 with all proceeds going to the Carpet Fund. For further details please see Fr Andrew. Magazine Deadline - please note that the deadline for contributions to the March Magazine is Sunday 24th February. We plan to go to press on Friday 1st March. Ash Wednesday is on the 6th March, and at 9.00am we hope to welcome pupils and staff from our School to a Service in church. Also at 7.30pm there will be a Sung Eucharist. Lent Groups: as usual during Lent there will be an extra Eucharist on each Thursday evening in Lent at the earlier time of 7.00pm, followed by a study / discussion group which is open to all. This year we will watch television programmes from the series "Broken" in which Sean Bean plays a Catholic priest in a poverty-stricken community in the Northwest; then afterwards we will discuss some of the issues it raises for us. The Easter Journey is an event organised in our Deanery to help primary school children learn about the weeks which led up to the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ. This year it will be at St John s Earlestown, Wednesday 27th to Friday 29th March. It is aimed at children in Year 5 and is being organised by Revd Chris Stafford. Spring into Craftiness - For all you budding artists and crafters, this year we are planning to hold a Spring Craft Fayre and Exhibition on the 30th March. You don't have to be an expert to join in - if you love what you do, then come and show it off! We'd love to see stalls of home made crafts for visitors to browse - and an exhibition for everyone to wonder over. So we need you to get in touch to show us what you can do - Janet Dawber <dennisdawber@hotmail.com>. Details for booking stalls and exhibiting will follow in next month's Magazine, but don't wait for that - GET CRAFTING! Sunday 31st March is Mothering Sunday, an occasion for the whole family. We look forward to pupils and staff of our School joining us for the Eucharist at 10am on that day.

From the Vicar: Dear Friends, Today I got back from my post-christmas break which I was lucky to be able to take in the warm and sunny Canary Islands. And so once I d put the first load of washing on, I trudged through the icy slush down to Tesco to get the usual supplies of bread and milk, and arriving there I was greeted by the first promotional aisle full of chocolate Easter Eggs! Well - February begins with the celebration of The Presentation of Christ in the Temple or, as we usually know the Feast, Candlemas, a word which has survived because of its clarity and simplicity. It s part of our culture. Candlemas is traditionally the end of the 40 days of Christmas festivities and in many ways a hinge of the year, when we can look back at our celebration of Christmas for the last time, before looking forward to the 40 days of Lent which precede our celebration of the Resurrection of our Lord at Easter - so in a way, Tesco is not that far from the mark - it s a pity however, that (pancakes on Shrove Tuesday excepted) Lent is not marked in the same way. This year, our school will be joining us at the Parish Eucharist on Sunday 3rd at 10am and there will be a blessing and procession of candles to the Epiphany House for our last prayers there before Lent. I do hope that you will all support this wonderful opportunity for evangelism and strengthening the links between our church and school. The use of candles in Worship (like incense) is sometimes scoffed at as high church flummery but one of the things that almost always strikes me when I visit people at home (often in the least churched homes) is the ubiquity of candles. They re everywhere! Fireplaces and mantelpieces full of candles, downstairs toilets, hallways, decorated with candles. Gardens and conservatories littered with candles in various wind resisting containers. And, of course, candles on tables and cakes. It s the same with things that make our homes smell nice as well, from scented candles to Glade plug-ins - but why do people cough and splutter the moment a thurible appears? I hope that our celebration of Candlemas will help people to see how God uses the very ordinary things of this world, like candles and oil, bread and wine, sweet smelling gum to speak to our senses about the beauty of holiness maybe even that we could always say a prayer when we light a candle at home!

Easter is quite late this year of course, so we still have a few weeks before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, 6th March. On that day, the whole school will be coming to church at 9.30am for the Eucharist with the imposition of ashes, and there will be a Sung Eucharist at 7.30pm as well so every opportunity to be able to begin and keep the season well. During Lent we will have the opportunity to make our communion more frequently, to pray the Stations of Cross, and to deepen our faith through study. This year the study group on Thursday evenings after the Eucharist will be a meditation on the portrayal of a Catholic priest in a deprived parish by Sean Bean in the BBC series Broken. I have found this an immensely powerful course of study which considers some of the many pressing issues which confront our modern world, and I hope that as many of you as possible will be able to join in with the study group. With the assurance of my prayers as we look forward to Lent,

School News Fantastic Start to the new year! Staff and children returned to school for the new year with enthusiasm to start a new term of learning. We were privileged to be able start the year with our school Eucharist service in church to celebrate Epiphany at which the children enjoyed worshiping with members of the congregation of St James Church. As school have been promoting the love of reading this year we have enjoyed welcoming friends and family to our half termly reading morning at which many enjoyed sharing books and poems. We are also looking to extend our school library over the coming months so if you have any books that you feel would be suitable and you are not using they would be gratefully received. Alternatively if anyone would like to come into school and read with the children this would also be gratefully appreciated. As usual there have been lots of wonderful experiences for the children during this month which have included a trip to a rather cold Tatton Park for year 6. Despite the weather they had a lovely time and learned a lot. I would be grateful if you would all hold our year 6 children in your prayers over the coming months as they have been attending school for early bird sessions to help them with their learning towards their statutory assessments in May. As well as attending reading mornings our parents and carers were invited into school for our Magical Mystery Tour evening. During this evening we were able to show how we use technology to support our learning in this modern world. Great fun was had by all. Head Teacher Jan Holmes Learn, laugh and live with the love of God.

School Diary for February St James' CE Primary School - if you'd like to know more of what is happening in our School, you can find the School Newsletters on line at Lent Course Starting Thursday 7th March A six week Lent Course Based on the BBC TV Programme " BROKEN " Father Michael is a Catholic priest presiding over a Northern urban parish. He is Modern, maverick, and reassuringly flawed. He must be confidant, counsellor and confessor to a congregation struggling to reconcile its beliefs with the challenges of daily life. Do come along and join us every Thursday evening during Lent - we meet after Mass, from 8pm in the Parish Room. Please note that this is a six week course, to correspond with the six episodes of the TV programme: whilst you are welcome at any of these meetings, it would be great to see you at all of them! For further details please see Fr Andrew.

A chance to Share the Good News! Out of the 80 million Easter eggs sold in this part of the world every year, the Real Easter Egg is the only one which has an Easter story book in the box, is made of Fairtrade chocolate and supports charitable projects. Not only has it made an increase in Fairtrade chocolate sales, but nearly 275,000 has been donated to charitable projects and to pay Fairtrade Premium fees to farmers, allowing them to invest in their communities, buying everything from school books and solar panels to providing fresh water. The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, has this to say: The Real Easter Egg gives consumers their first ever chance to buy an Easter egg that not only tastes good but does good, bringing to light the Easter themes of hope and new life. I believe there will be widespread support for the product from the faith community and wider afield with many millions likely to be interested. The Real Easter Egg is a chance to educate and do good giving money to charitable projects. Real Easter Eggs will be on sale in Tesco, Waitrose, Morrisons or Asda (the Original egg costs 3.99), or we can order on line from <

Stained Glass Window Sunday 3rd February we'll keep as Candlemas, when we remember the time when Joseph and Mary brought the baby Jesus (now just 40 days old) to the temple to present him before God. We remember how the Children of Israel were released from slavery in Egypt after the death of all the Egyptian first-born - Exodus chapter 13 explains that thereafter every first-born son should be regarded as especially dedicated to God. So Jesus was presented in the Temple, with the sacrifice prescribed in Leviticus chapter 12. The well-to-do would bring a lamb, but the poor were let off with the much more affordable brace of turtledoves. When God became a human child, he chose parents who were poor, not rich - our window shows two turtledoves being offered. The tax man had insisted that they travel the length of the country to be registered, so their savings must have been at rock bottom. Little did they know at this stage that they were to become refugees, making the arduous journey to Egypt to escape persecution.

But unexpectedly Simeon and Anna, both godly folk attached to the Temple, brought words of encouragement. Each Evensong we repeat Simeon's words when we sing the Nunc Dimittis, and remember how Simeon perceived in this one small baby the Saviour promised by God. He spoke of Jesus as "... the light to bring light to the Gentiles...", the bringer of salvation to all peoples (not just to his own countrymen). We who in these later centuries follow Jesus inherit in some measure his mission - we are to bring the light of Christ to all the people with whom we interact. Today, when children are brought to church to be baptised they are traditionally given a candle and told to shine as a light in the world. These small candles are lit from the Paschal Candle, the large candle kindled each Easter and kept in church as a graphic reminder that Christ came to be the light of the world. In fact, in our church the small candles we give are made from what remains of the old Paschal Candles, recycled and passed on to the rising generation. Temple. We all need to be reminded that as baptised followers of Jesus each of us has a responsibility to demonstrate by the way we live that we carry the Light of Christ. But so often we fall short. So it became a church tradition to dedicate the candles we use in worship, that they may serve as a continuing reminder to all of us, before we embark upon the period of reflection and selfassessment we call Lent. Hence the name Candlemass given to this occasion which the Lectionary calls The Presentation of Christ in the We are glad to welcome the children and staff from our own Church School to join us in the Eucharist at 10am on that day, and together ask for the light of Christ to be present in each one of our lives. If you'd like to, you'd be welcome to join us.

Cell of Our Lady of Walsingham Our Walsingham Cell is especially remembered every third Tuesday of the month at the 7.30pm Eucharist - this month we shall meet on Tuesday 19th February. Do come and join us in this Act of Worship - all Cell events are open to everybody who would like to come. As well as supporting the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, part of the work of the Cell is to support worship in a church like ours which gives a proper place to the Virgin Mary, honouring her for her crucial role as the Mother of Jesus. So in December the Cell presented our church with a necessary Altar book, the Common Worship Times & Seasons Missal. As you can see from the picture, this is a large book which can be used at each of the principal seasons of the church's year. Each season has an introduction which gives reasons why this period is special in the life of the church - for example the introduction to the Lent season includes this explanation: As candidates for baptism were instructed in Christian faith, and as penitents prepared themselves, through fasting and penance, to be readmitted to communion, the whole Christian community was invited to join them in the process of study and repentance, the extension of which over forty days would remind them of the forty days that Jesus spent in the wilderness, being tested by Satan. Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence; from the middle ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross. Then follow liturgical resources appropriate to the theme of the season, such as Invitations to Confession, the Acclamations used before the reading of the Gospel, some suggested Intercessions, some prayers for use at the Preparation of the Table, and so on. These books are not cheap - this one cost but the Cell was glad to donate this one to help enrich our worship during all the Seasons of the year. In addition the blue carpet in much of the church is showing signs of wear and tear. Renewing it is becoming necessary, so the Cell has donated 500 towards the cost of this important project. Dot Beesley (Cell Secretary)

From the Registers Funerals: Tuesday 15th January Irene Smith (aged 89) Wednesday 23rd January Elizabeth (Betty) Fairhurst (aged 89) Doris Power (aged 84) Brian Lee (aged 81) Pre-Christmas Raffle This year the Pre-Christmas Raffle was very well supported, and we raised 287. However there are two prizes which remain unclaimed - these were won by Harold Plant and J. Shockley. These prizes are on my pew; if anyone can help to ensure the bottles arrive at their destination I would be grateful. 15 Mothers' Union The Mothers Union will meet on Tuesday 5 February 2019 after the 7.30pm Eucharist. This will be our planning meeting, at which the agenda for the year will be set. We were heartened at our AGM in January to be reminded of how many good causes had been supported by the Mothers Union in 2018 and we look forward to giving you more information about the work we are doing as we go through 2019 in future magazines. Membership of the Mothers Union is open to everyone, male or female, parents or not, and all ages are welcome. We work towards helping support charities locally, nationally and internationally through a variety of means. If you would like to know more about the Mothers Union or would like to join our branch, please let me know. Geraldine Peplow, Enrolling Member Rosary Group We meet every Thursday at 6.50pm in the Lady Chapel to say the Rosary together. But not just any Rosary! You might, if you are able to join us, find out that at St James the Great, Haydock, we do things a bit differently. We have developed what we call a "Scripture Rosary". We take the traditional prayer "Hail Mary..." but instead of just repeating this (as many do), whoever is leading reads before each "Hail Mary... " a brief verse of Scripture concerning the life of Christ as seen through Mary's eyes, to help our meditation. The focus is very much on Jesus, as his mum would wish! If you'd like to come, you'd be very welcome. After-Service Refreshments Once again it is time to thank all the ladies and gentlemen who help with refreshments after Services on Sunday and Wednesday mornings. Thank you to all those who make gifts of milk, tea, coffee, sugar, biscuits and cakes which are greatly appreciated. This year (2018) we made 1053 for church funds. Joan and Roy.

Guild of St Raphael The next meeting of the Guild of St Raphael will be held after the 7.30pm Eucharist on Tuesday, 26 February 2019 when Dot Beesley and Maureen Barnett will offer laying on of hands. Please join us for our brief meeting afterwards. Annual membership subscriptions are now due and remain at 5 for the coming year. If you have not yet paid your Guild membership subscription, please can you let me have it as soon as possible? The Guild of St Raphael Eucharist is held on the last Tuesday of every month at 7.30pm, with a short meeting afterwards. Everyone is welcome. If you would like more information about the Guild of St Raphael, or about becoming a member, please let me know. Edna Clough Safeguarding Policy The PCC has formally adopted the Church of England Safeguarding Policy and Practice. This can be read on the CofE website at < The policy has been approved by the House of Bishops and as a PCC we have a duty to have due regard for both policy and practice. All members of the PCC are encouraged to complete the basic course on safeguarding. This can be completed on line at < Information is kept at the back of church on my pew. Please feel free to ask any questions. Nancy Holloway Donations to support the Children's Society Laura Finney and colleagues at the Cardio Respiratory Department at Whiston Hospital made donations instead of sending Christmas Cards - they raised 60 for the Children's Society. Also our card stall at the back of church raised 54 for this excellent charity.
