Dear Friends, From the Vicar: I write this as we are preparing to celebrate our Patronal Festival on 25th July, St James Day, and as our School year ends on the same day. There is always something sad about saying good-bye to our year 6 pupils as they leave the relative comfort and safety of primary school to begin the adventure of big school and the adult world that lies beyond but it is nevertheless, a reminder that we are all called to move on in life. Our Patron, St James the Pilgrim would have known this very well! One of the joys for me of being back in my home area is being able to visit some of the places and sites that have been significant for me in my own journey through life, as well as visiting some places I have never been. A day or two ago, I managed to visit Crosby waterfront to see the installation Another Place by Sir Antony Gormley. Previously I had read about it and seen it on TV of course, but not been in person. It s a remarkable piece of modern art; 100 bronze figures, each one over 6 feet tall, spread along the shoreline. When I visited, the tide was out, and they were all visible each one standing and looking out to sea. On the horizon, a wind turbine farm, behind that the hills and mountains of North Wales and finally the Irish Sea. Standing amongst the figures, I felt a very powerful sense of open-ness to the future; being lifted to see new possibilities and futures.
The work was first staged in 1997 at Cuxhaven, Germany, which was one of the major ports for emigration to America in the middle of the last century. Antony Gormley has said of it; In one sense it takes on utopia - the human need to imagine another life in another place and the founding of a better life on better principles. Perhaps another way to put that would be in the words of St Augustine of Hippo ( AD) You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you. The ultimate destination for all Christians is our home in heaven to be united with the life of the Godhead, the Trinity itself. That is the other place our hearts seek, and it is the other place we are so privileged to glimpse and share in in the here and now as we celebrate the liturgy of the church. Every time we come together to pray and to share in the Eucharist, we are being given a foretaste of heaven! Maybe that s something worth thinking about when going to church seems a bit of a chore or a duty! It s also worth asking ourselves why we don t seem to be very good at communicating this amazing fact to those around us if what I ve written is true then our churches should be bursting at the seams with people we are so often told are spiritually hungry. How can we help them to see that it is in God that they can find the food to meet their needs? Please think about this over the summer and wherever you go, may your holidays be truly holy-days! With my love and prayers, page 4
End of another year at St James CE Primary from Head Teacher Jan Holmes As we come to the end of yet another year at St James CE Primary School it is time to reflect on all the wonderful events that have taken place. There have been a variety of school trips such as Chester Zoo to visiting St George s Hall for The Greatest story ever told. We have celebrated the start of a new era as Father Andrew joined our family and we all look forward to working closely with him. We extend our grateful thanks to Father Harry who supported us during the interregnum and pray that he will continue to stay in touch and visit us from time to time. Our children have exceeded themselves in their learning this year with Year 6 achieving the best results since the new assessments began. Also each child has grown in confidence which was evident from Reception s end of year assembly when they shared the story of the Rainbow Fish and how they have made friends this year, to the Year 6 production of Pirates of the Curry Bean. The children were excellent and performed to an extremely high standard well done to all of them. As with the end of most school years it is sad to say good bye to, not only the year 6 pupils, but to some members of staff. We say a big thank you to Miss Hamilton and Mr Stewart who have covered for staff who will return after having their families and we wish them both well in the future. Sadly we also say goodbye to Miss Gomes and Miss Jones who have grown in their roles at St James and are ready to extend their careers for greater things. Our grateful thanks go to them for all the hard work and dedication they have shown to our school. We will miss them both but are thankful for the friendship we have developed over the years. We are all now looking forward to enjoying a restful summer holiday and pray the sun will continue to shine as we prepare to return in September for more fun filled learning. Thank you to all who have supported our school this year. Please continue to keep our children and staff in your prayers. page 5
Mothers Union Summer Outing 2018 For the Mothers Union Summer outing this year we visited the garden of Alan & Heather Sidebotham in Southport, which they open, by arrangement, under the National Garden Scheme. Their walled garden incorporates a church folly and is landscaped with reclaimed materials from historic sites from around Lancashire, as well as several water features and amazing coy carp. We enjoyed Heather s homemade strawberry and coffee cakes then browsed around the wonderful garden. Thank you Heather (and friends) for your warm hospitality. The National Garden Scheme is the most significant charitable fundraiser of nursing charities in the UK. Beneficiaries include, The Queen s Nursing Institute, Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, Carers Trust, Hospice UK and Parkinsons UK. They also provide bursaries to help young gardeners get started. Heather is planning a fund raiser in aid of Southport Hospice in the coming months. She will let us know when the event has been arranged and hopefully we can arrange a group trip of St James congregation to support her.
Stained Glass Window Our next window is possibly the most unusual window in the church. It portrays the popular Polish saint Stanislaus Kostka, a lad from an aristocratic Polish family who insisted against all opposition on becoming a Jesuit. He died at the age of 18 in St Stanislaus is very popular among the Polish community. Perhaps because of his studious spirituality and his young age at death, he became patron saint of novices and students. Appropriately then he figures in a memorial window commemorating the life and work of John Naylor, organist and schoolmaster in Haydock. In his mid teens, Stanislaus fell ill and desired to receive Holy Communion, but his Lutheran landlord refused to allow a Priest into the house. Stanislaus prayed to St Barbara and she appeared to him with two angels, bearing the host and chalice. So he received communion and subsequently recovered. This experience spurred him on in his spiritual quest, and after enduring an arduous month-long journey to Rome he obtained Papal approval to realise his ambition and become a Jesuit.
Reflections on the General Synod held in July 2018 at York As always, the Sessions of General Synod have attracted press attention and much of the detail is available via the Church of England website and the Church Times. In what follows, the Lay Representatives offer our reflections on selected topics which we feel are relevant to our diocese and deaneries, and which might help ministry to the communities which surround our churches. Address by the Bishop of Peshawar The Most Reverend Humphrey Peters, Moderator of the Church of Pakistan, spoke movingly about the situation facing his sector of the Anglican Communion. Christians are now less than 3% of the population and the Church struggles for survival. The influx of refugees from Afghanistan and Iraq brought extremism to Pakistan; Al-Qaeda and Isis set up headquarters there. Bias against Christians is fostered in society and education. There are target killings of Christians. The Bishop spoke about how in this dangerous situation the Church has initiated interfaith activities with the Muslim community, attempting to promote reconciliation and peaceful co-existence. He gave examples of the success of this work, and asked for the support of the Church of England as they struggle to survive in a very hostile environment. - In our safe diocese of Liverpool, can we strengthen our links with dioceses such as this, in the ten areas of the world which are most dangerous for Christians? - In our local churches, can we encourage a regular prayer ministry - perhaps asking each church to adopt a diocese to support in prayer? - How can we find ways of keeping information flowing from these dioceses, to inform our prayers, highlight their needs and show us how best we can help? - Note that here in Haydock we have links with the Diocese of Wiawso in Ghana, where it can also be dangerous to be a Christian. We remember the visit of Bishop Abraham and his wife, and his account of the difficulties they have in training and maintaining priests for their scattered churches page 8
Digital Evangelism Not just for Geeks! We can all get involved. This Seminar was presented by Adrian Harris (Head of Digital Communications at Church House in Westminster) and his team, who reported on the exciting progress made to make the CofE an effective presence in the digital landscape. Key points made included: - Every local church has an entry in the website A Church Near You, which attracts millions of visitors each year and has become the main vehicle for people to find the church when they need it - Now each church can use its entry to create its own free-ofcharge website to empower its outreach to all age groups in the community. Facilities include multiple pages, a photo gallery capability and a resource hub to help the editors. - This not only offers a powerful evangelistic opportunity, but also can enable members of the congregation to play a full part in the mission of the church. - The team announced its innovative work centred around the Amazon Echo smart loudspeaker; the CofE has delivered a "skill" for this which allows the user to request the device to pray, to answer questions such as "Who is God?", or simply to say grace at mealtimes. Further development is planned. The team provided hard evidence of the success of websites and FaceBook pages in reaching out to people who are not regular churchgoers. Christmas and Lent campaigns mounted via the CofE website and FaceBook facilities have been hugely successful; the 2018 Christmas campaign "Follow the Star" will run during Advent and will end on Epiphany, Sunday 6 January Adrian and his colleagues are committed to helping local churches to take full advantage of the exciting possibilities offered by the Digital Evangelism resources. - How in Liverpool diocese can we support local churches to reach out to their communities using the digital platforms now used by the overwhelming majority of people? - At deanery level what can be done to support churches wishing to embrace this new opportunity? - In what way can we empower lay members of our congregations to take the lead in making digital evangelism a reality in our local churches as soon as possible? - How can our local churches take advantage of the centrally operated Christmas and Lent outreach campaigns?
Archbishops Council - Budget for 2019 The details of the Budget are in GS2097, which may be downloaded from this page on the CofE website: < The presentation by Canon John Spence brought this dry subject to life in a truly remarkable way. He acknowledged the background trends - declining church attendances, decline in planned giving, diminishing payments of Parish Share, age profile shifting towards advancing years, and so on. he eloquently set out the vision of the Archbishops Council - to harvest souls, to see people coming to the joy in Christ, to see more people becoming disciples. To those ends, the Budget s key features are: - Fund an increasing number of ordinands - Improving our Safeguarding capabilities - Developing the Renewal and Reform programmes - Seeking efficiency savings in existing work - Seeking additional funding from other funding partners - Release some funds from capital reserves He emphasised the need for consultation and mutual support between dioceses, the need for greater financial openness, and the need to exploit the work on digital evangelism which has provided wonderful resources which every parish church can use. But above all he urged us to move forward with confidence in the Lord. - In Liverpool diocese, how can we adopt the greater financial openness Canon Spence advocates and better present to people in the pews the vision which underlies budgets? - How can we help and encourage all the churches in the Liverpool diocese to embrace the powerful tools for digital evangelism which are now available at no cost? Address from the Most Revd Moon Hing Most Revd Moon Hing is the Archbishop and Primate of the Church of the Province of South East Asia. It is a very large province, encompassing nine countries and it takes a 12 hour flight to go from one end to the other. There are many languages and cultures - English is the only common language! In most countries Christians are fewer than 2% of the population, and we need to be keenly aware of the cultural differences which exist. At the millennium there was a Decade of Evangelism declared. Each PCC was told But
to place Evangelism on every agenda, to appoint a Lay Coordinator of Evangelism, and to establish an Evangelism fund to pay for evangelistic activities. Within a decade the church had around twelve thousand new members! One hundred new churches were planted. The key was to become intentional in the matter of evangelism. The emphasis is now on fostering discipleship. - In Liverpool diocese, by comparison, our life is so much easier! Should we be asking each local church to put on the PCC agenda for every meeting the topic Evangelism? - How can we set about encouraging Discipleship? Setting God s People Free This lively fringe meeting addressed the question of how in practical terms can we begin to apply the vision in the life of the local church. All of us, laity and clergy alike, are commissioned by our Lord to communicate the Gospel - by how we live, not just by what we say - and so make disciples. Not just Sunday, but Monday to Saturday as well. Printed resources have been produced to help us to take this forward, and there is a web page giving access to these at: < We are encouraged to sign up for an newsletter to keep us in touch with developments. Barriers to progress were discussed - some of these seem enormous, but the message was that by taking small steps we can eventually move these barriers or at least get around them. - In Liverpool diocese how can we make our church members more aware of this vision and this initiative, and help them to get involved? - Should we be asking all PCCs to put this as a constant agenda item for each meeting? - How can deanery synods spread this vision among the churches, and encourage churches to support one another in taking this forward? Footnote: Please think about these things. General Synod is the Parliament of the Church of England and has responsibility for shaping its future course and establishing policy. It has a duty to discuss the issues of the day and provide some guidance. It's important that key ideas are aired at local church level, so that fine words uttered in London or York can be translated into positive local action, to help our church serve the community in which it sits.
