2 Rector s Message September, 2012 Dear Friends in Christ, I find myself at the end of each season looking forward to the summer months: the slower pace of Naples, and the quiet months here at Trinity-by-the-Cove. By the time August rolls around I am usually looking forward to the increase of activity that slowly builds over the fall months. Yesterday tropical storm Isaac passed by Naples without much ado. The rectory and the other church buildings were shuttered in preparation for the storm. Jill, my mother-in-law and I spent Sunday and Monday boarded down in what felt like a cave. It didn t take too long for me to become quite bored and to feel a bit claustrophobic. I do not particularly enjoy watching television. I wasn t interested in reading. And unlike Jill, I was not interested in cleaning out a closet or two. I even tired of playing Words with Friends and surfing Facebook on my I-pad! Fortunately the skies cleared mid-morning and we could venture out from the uncomfortable darkness of the rectory. For me, what the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year have in common with a tropical storm is simply this I can only take so much down time before I start itching for activity. The slowness of summer was a welcome respite, and now I am ready for a new program year of activity, learning, sharing, community and service. This month s issue of the Trinitarian is full of ways for your participation. Take a look at the programs and ministry opportunities that will begin in the next few months. A five-week series, Embracing a Life of Meaning, starts off our Sunday morning Adult Formation program. There are several weekday opportunities to consider as well as three Wednesday Nights Out offerings. Our ministry for children and young families is also diverse and interesting. New this year is a once-amonth Sunday morning forum/casual conversation, particularly designed for adults while their children are in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Again this year, Fr. Edward will offer the Spiritual Forum Series for our youth in grades The Young Family Socials will take a different twist this year, with themed gatherings in homes, parks and other places of interest. The Women of Trinity and their ministry of monthly luncheons, Church Mouse and the Christmas Market are very popular, and provide ways to get to know other Trinitarians, as do the monthly Men of Trinity breakfasts. And do not forget the important work our Service Commission organizes for us to make a difference in our community. If you happen to have the gift of sewing, the Sewing for Hope group is another consideration for service. This group sews dresses for the work of the Tumaini Fund, a ministry in Tanzania which our parish supports. What I ve mentioned is a small sampling of resources available in and through Trinity-by -the-cove to aid you in growing in your knowledge and love of God, service to the parish, the community, and the world. Please take the time to peruse this month s newsletter and consider what offerings might be of interest to you. And by all means, join in sharing in the wonderful parish life at Trinity-by-the-Cove! At Trinity-by-the- Cove, we also are getting ready for our children to enter their school room, the atrium, to meet new friends and to fall in love with their favorite teacher, the Good Shepherd. Together with our friends and our faith, we are One Flock. In John 10:15, Jesus tells us I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. Who are these sheep? I wonder if The Shepherd s voice is calling us to help bring these sheep to Him? Do you know neighbors or co-workers who are not in a relationship with Jesus? Might you lead them to Trinity-by-the-Cove? The Holy Spirit will meet us here. Do you have grandchildren in town who need to be with the Good Shepherd? Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Trinity s religious formation for children, gives them quiet time, in their very busy world, to be with Jesus. Our children, might they have friends who they d like to introduce to the Good Shepherd? Rally Day is September 9, following our 10:00 a.m. liturgy. Let s each invite a new family to this welcoming event. On September 16 th, our children and youth s formation year begins at 10:00, following the 9:00 a.m. Liturgy. Let s encourage them to bring a friend to church on Sunday. I wonder what would happen if every Sunday became Bring a Friend Sunday at Trinity-by-the-Cove, not just for the children, but for all of His Flock. Friends-Faith-One Flock Page 3 September, 2012

5 Coming This Month Community of Faith s I get older and have more time and perspective to reflect on the nature of life, I A have come to the conclusion that we are indeed a community of love, or should be. The Gospel reading for May 13th from John encompasses a lot of it: As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved. you. Well, ok, but what does that mean? I love my family, my friends and maybe some others like those I meet at church. But what do we do about this challenge, this commandment? How is it reflected in my life day to day? Sure I could contact the rector and see if a child might use some time, maybe with studies or just being read to, possibly to relieve a harried mother. There have to be some seniors who don t drive who could use help with grocery shopping, perhaps just a visit now and then. How about a ride to church? And there are spouses who are caregivers who needed a break from time to time. This is called love in action. By these things you will Like so many things in life it is a question of attitude. Am I going to be outgoing in my love for others, to look at others with a positive feeling for them like the person on US 41 who pulls into my lane without signaling? There are lots of examples we can all think of. S O what about his community of faith or as some would interpret it, a community of love? You can give love in many ways; some directly where you can see what your love does as in relieving that caregiver for a few hours. Some times it is knowing that your gift to the church will provide help to that child or adult that you don t even know. It may be some other form of love in action or it may be our pledge, a gift to the Memorial Fund, the Endowment Fund with current gifts, planned gifts and legacy gifts. May your joy be made complete in this community of faith and love for all people. Edward Gleason EMBRACING THE PROPHETS IN CONTEMPORARY CULTURE with Walter Brueggemann SEPTEMBER 16 - OCTOBER 21 10:15 to 11:15 Formation Room Old Testament Scholar, Walter Brueggemann, arguably America s leading Old Testament scholar and theologian, will take us on a wild ride through the poetic prophecy of Hebrew Scripture. He will identify the cultural contexts providing a framework for Israel s history as he significantly and challengingly draws conclusions between Israel s sociological, economic and spiritual status and that of America today. The group will discuss relevant questions such as: What was the message of these remarkable poet-prophets in their own time and place? What is the message of the prophets for us today? Who are today s prophetic voices? How has the contemporary church been co-opted by culture? What steps can we take to reclaim the prophetic message of distributive justice, nonviolence, loss and hope? What is your role in bringing God s perspective to today s society? Each of the six sessions begins with a minute video presentation by Walter Brueggemann followed by group discussion. A participant workbook will be used to prepare for the conversation each week. A different participant will facilitate the class each week. Reserve your book on the registration roster in the Parish Hall. Cost of the book is $ Page September, 6 May/June page 8 Page 5 May/June 2012 September, 2012 page 5

6 Around the Parish Around the Parish Dear Trinity-by-the-Cove Family, Our God is a God of many blessings. The children at Parkside Elementary School have truly been blessed by your generous spirit at the opening of this school year. It was a treat to deliver enough spiral notebooks so that each of our over 700 students could start the year with a brand new one with some left over for future needs! A variety of other school supplies that made their way into the collection will be distributed to the students as well, all of which will make their school experience a stronger and more positive one. The administration, faculty, students and families of Parkside share their thanks for your support of our mission. We look forward to partnering with you again in the future. With gratitude, Tom Gemmer, Parkside School Counselor Page 6 September, 2012 Summer Gardeners We wish to thank the summer gardeners for watering the flowering pots in the children s atrium. Not only did they survive, but most plants thrived. Thank you: Gretchen Peterson, Andy Baldwin, Jenny Anton, Deborah Gallagher, Susan LaPointe, Paul King, Jody Tiffany, the McDonnell family, and the Angstrom family. And most especially, we thank God for not only the water throughout the summer, but for all things bright and beautiful. We look forward to the children returning on September 16 th to tend and care for this special garden. If you have an interest in helping the children nurture a love for gardening, please give me a call: ext. 215 or lgemmer@trinitybythecove.com SUMMER FOYER GROUPS ver the summer months, six Foyer Groups O were formed and gathered in each other s homes or condo party rooms for a meal and fellowship. There were no planned agendas or topics of the day to discuss.just time to be social with each other. We share with you just one of the many testimonials that came in from first time participants, Anne and Mason Ayres: S "A Foyer Group? I am not sure, I don't think we have time...our summer is so busy with the kids and all!" "A Foyer Group? Absolutely!" We have been blessed by new friendships that would not have formed otherwise and we have really enjoyed getting together with our foyer group. It has given us the chance to get to know other parishioners on a deeper level and we have laughed a lot! By gathering in each other's homes, it made it very simple to plan and it was in a casual, comfortable setting. We had never participated in one before but we are so glad we did and we look forward to the next series! Service Project at St. Matthew s House ervice Committee Chairman, Jim Wheeler, reports that on August 18th, approximately 18 parishioners spent 3 hours of hard work: chopping hundreds of veggies and fruit, slicing and dicing several deserts, cleaned out some rather nasty coolers and completely renewed the meeting room and left the dining room spotless. One volunteer shared: Not only did the morning at St. Matthew s House provide an opportunity to help those not as fortunate as I am, but even better I got to meet and chat with so many interesting Trinitarians that I hadn t met before! What I discovered was that we have so many wonderful people in our congregation who like chopping fruit and vegetables. One more reason to treasure Trinity-by-the-Cove. COMMUNITY GRANT COMMISSION MAY 2012 The Community Grant Commission is pleased to announce that the Vestry has approved the recommended grant awards of $132,474 from the Archangel Fund of Trinity-By-The-Cove. These funds come from the Fine Art of Living series, Women of Trinity including the Christmas Market and Mouse Sales and the very generous support of Trinitarians and our community. We actually raised $150,000 this year, but are holding $17,526 in reserve to be able to assist should there be an emergency need this summer or fall. This year sixteen agencies in the category of Physical Health and Development went through the grant process. (This is the second year of the three year rotating agency grant application cycle.) Grant Commission members visited the grant applicants reviewing their requests, funding sources, board composition and budgets. Grant checks have been mailed. Each agency must submit a report of their grant expenditure by the end of this year. Grants were awarded to: Baby Basics Camp Angels Cancer Alliance of Naples Healthcare Network Foundation for Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, and Sister Veronica Fund Dental Outreach Drug Free Collier Eden Autism Services Naples Equestrian Challenge Grace Place for Families and Children Lighthouse of Collier NCH - Safe and Healthy Children s Coalition Neighborhood Health Clinic Project Help Senior Friendship Center Sunlight Home Please give a big thank you to the Commission members Joanne Fowler, Fred McDuffie, Chuck Abookire, Anne Hale, Bill Forbes, Connie Bransilver, Nan Goebel, Russell Tuff and Women of Trinity liaison Jan Huffman for their passion and dedication to this ministry. And we thank the Trinity family for its commitment to provide this help to these agencies in our community. Joyce Fletcher, Chairperson Page 7 September, 2012
