2 Rector s Message April, 2012 Dear Parishioners: Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Season in Naples and at Trinity-by-the-Cove is nearing an end. During these past six months, our parish life has been abundant. A quick glance at the Sunday announcements published in the service leaflet makes it clear that the parish is active, joyful and generous. Participation in our Christian Formation opportunities has been at an all-time high; Sunday worship attendance has remained strong; volunteer participation has been robust, as seen in the Women of Trinity s Church Mouse ministry. Speaking of the Church Mouse under the strong and dedicated leadership of Marilyn Wainscott, the Mouse generated $70,000 in revenue this past program year, of which $60,000 will be added to the amount which the Women of Trinity will disburse, over the next few months, to a host of outreach and service ministries. This is the highest amount of money the Mouse has ever generated. Special thanks to Marilyn and George Wainscott, and, of course, Bob Fraser, who have been the driving forces behind the Mouse s consistent successes. 1 Palm Sunday 9:00 Valet Parking 8 Easter Day 6:30 Holy Eucharist 10:15 Easter Egg Hunt 2Monday in Holy Week 12:00 Grief Support Lunch/offsite 3:00 Community Grants 9 Parish Office is Closed 8:00 Men of Trinity Breakfast Meeting 3 Tuesday in Holy Week 8:30 Staff Meeting 10 8:30 Morning 9:00 Staff Meeting 4 Wednesday in Holy Week 10:15 Rector s Class 11:30 Holy Eucharist at Glenview 7:30 Choir Rehearsal 11 10:00 Sewing for Hope 5 Maundy Thursday 6:00 Maundy Thursday Liturgy & Foot Washing 7:00 Watch 12 8:00 Men s Bible 9:15 Women s Bible 12:00 SAGES Lunch 12:00 Healing Eucharist 6 Good Friday 12:00 Good Friday Liturgy 13 7Holy Saturday 8:15 Easter Vigil 14 Our winter Wednesday Nights Out were well received and well attended; and, most recently, the Fine Art of Living series was a wonderful success, surpassing expectations. Please read the article found further in this month s issue of The Trinitarian. Cecile Fenstermaker, Diane Moore, Lisa McDonnell and Sandy Durant did a fantastic job creating and hosting this year s two events, Bella Ferragamo and A Starry Night in Provence. Within the next few weeks, the pace will slow. Before our winter members head north, however, and our permanent residents leave on their summer holidays, we will celebrate the consummate feast of the Christian church: Easter. I hope to exchange Pascal greetings with many of you. As is our tradition, the Easter offering is designated for the important work of our local chapter of Habitat for Humanity; for as long as I have been with you, the Christmas and Easter offerings have gone to this cause, helping well-deserving people move forward in life through home ownership. To those heading north: may you have a safe and restful summer, and return to us in the fall, ready to share in another year of ministry. To those staying near: may the summer provide you with opportunities for rest and relaxation in this little corner of paradise. Faithfully, The Rev. Please let us know if and when you plans include leaving Naples..our data system allows us to have two addresses for each parishioner, thereby we are able to keep in touch with you and you can keep in touch with what is happening here! Just us, pbutler@trinitybythecove.com or call, , ext 202. Thank you. efore I was a Good Shepherd catechist, I was an B artsy craftsy Sunday School teacher (not a bad thing, just different). One of my Sunday School lessons for Easter was a piñata! Now I must admit, as a parent, I never liked the idea of a piñata, beating it until it broke, (although that is what happened to Jesus) and then having children greedily run over each other trying to get the candy. Anyway, my plan was to make a trap door in the piñata, with strings attached and hanging down so the children could each reach one. Together we pulled on a string, the piñata opened and tah dah nothing fell out!! It was EMPTY! I waited for the children s delightful aha moment, instead I got a few tears. I quickly said, Look it is empty, just like the tomb! They didn t get it. So are you wondering how we present the empty tomb to our children in the atrium? We proclaim the Resurrection boldly and often. Christ has died and He is Risen! Every theme of the Christian message we present to children is rooted in and refers back to the resurrection, especially Baptism and the Eucharist. While announcing the Resurrection we do not stress Christ s suffering and death, but rather, that by passing through suffering and death, Christ came to the resurrection. Death no longer has any power over Christ; death has been conquered forever! One of our doctrinal points is that death does not have the last word. Light overcomes the darkness. We present this to the children in two different ways, through the Bible and through our liturgy. What is proclaimed in the Bible is lived in liturgy! uring the Easter season, we begin by reading D the Biblical text from the Gospels and reflect on its message. Our meditation begins by reflecting on the empty tomb. We ponder together the meaning of the words: Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen We also reflect with the children the amazement of the women who were the first witnesses to the Linda Gemmer, Director of Catechesis resurrection. They go to the tomb brokenhearted, planning to perform the final preparations of the body for burial. They find the tomb is open and empty! They are so surprised especially when they see a person of dazzling light. Mary Magdalene recognizes the Risen One when he calls her by name. We ask the children, What is our response to this News that Jesus is Risen? Who will we tell? The children extend these readings by working with a diorama of a tomb that opens. The tomb pulls apart to reveal the interior chambers of the tomb. There are two inner chambers in ancient tombs. The stone has a place where it can be rolled away. There are steps that lead to the entrance of the tomb. ften what we do with young children leads to O the spirit of celebration. The Liturgy of the Light, in relation to the proclamation of the resurrection, is an example of this. Participating in this celebration enables the children to have an active role in the celebration and also prepares them to appreciate more fully this part of the Easter Vigil liturgy. During this celebration the atrium is in darkness and we too light a Paschal candle, the light of the Risen Christ, and process to the Table, singing Christ is Light. During the liturgy each child is invited to light their own candles from the paschal candle, and we see the light given to others, spreading to all the candles of the people gathered there. ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! Give thanks to the Risen Lord! Won t you join us in our Liturgy of the Light celebration this year? We will be gathering in the children s courtyard at 10:15 on April 22 nd. Come and receive the new light of the Risen Christ! Page 10 April, 2012 Page 3 April, 2012

4 Our Ministry to Youth, Families and Young Trinitarians Around the Parish Weekly Each week, Fr. Edward, with assistance from Linda Gemmer, prepares and sends a weekly to parents of children and youth (age 3-18). These s convey information about what children are doing each Sunday, advise of seasonal notices, and offer a prayer for your use that week. If you are not receiving the , please call the church office or Fr. Edward (egleason@trinitybythecove.com). If you are a grandparent (or great grandparent), you are more than welcome to sign up too! Confirmation for Youth Those youth who attended the Confirmation Forums and have indicated their desire to be confirmed should at the rehearsal at 10:15 on April 22, 2012 in the church. Confirmation is on April 29 at the 9 a.m. liturgy when the bishop visits. Youth Pilgrimage Maddie Durant, Jane Gray, Max McDonnell, Chad Murray, and Christian Warner are on the triennial Youth Pilgrimage with Fr. Edward, Virginia Gleason, Cappy Feuer, and Mike McDonnell. They will return on April 8 th from their time in Scotland and Northern England. They will have an opportunity to share their experience with the parish. Youth News The youth have spent time this past month exploring the 10 Commandments as well as the purpose and meaning of Lent in the Episcopal Church. Lots of conversations and lots of good questions from young minds. We have also enjoyed participating in the Mardi Gras procession and decorating the banner that led the children and parish out of the Church. We are looking forward to Youth Sunday and also planning to treat the parish to brunch as a April, 2012, page 4 thank you for all of the support that we have received. If you ever want to steal a doughnut, stop in the Youth Room on Sunday and say hello. Casey & Valerie Weidenmiller Fishing Tournament Finally, we are already thinking about summer and another wonderful Trinity Fishing Tournament. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Thursday Men s Bible Study News Trinity by the Cove Men s Bible Study Spring 2012 e study the Bible as an unfolding context W of God s story of the world. From Old Testament readings of the Creation and Fall, through to God s covenants with Noah, Abraham and Moses, we perceive God s unfailing belief that his people will ultimately overcome disobedience through redemption and adherence to his will. From the New Testament, we view Jesus death and resurrection as the ultimate redemption and a New Covenant that extends Old Testament covenants in a continuum of God s faith and love. We see the ascended Jesus continuing to do God s work primarily through the Holy Spirit who gives us the power and strength to do good works and take Gods message throughout the world. Though our study concludes in April, Fr. Edward has engendered in us a new beginning for thoughtful inquiry into a deeper understanding of the Bible. Edgar Davis T BABY BASICS OF COLLIER COUNTY he Community Grant Commission wants to continue to tell you about agencies your donations have helped. For six years Baby Basics has been providing diapers for parents in Collier County who are struggling to make ends meet. They are presently serving 300 babies through 8 distribution sites. In order to qualify, a family must be screened and referred through one of the local referral agencies, have a child under 3 years, be residents of Collier County, have at least 1 parent working, and not be receiving federal or state cash assistance. Jean Ann Lynch, a Naples resident, founded the first Baby Basics 19 years ago in New Jersey where she was living. She learned that many low income working families could not afford an adequate supply of diapers and children staying too long in wet and soiled diapers cried more, developed diaper rash and often infections from the resulting open sores affecting physical health and emotional development. A month s supply of diapers would typically cost a family at least $40. Many families would have to choose between diapers and food. She says the entire family is helped by the supportive atmosphere and community offered these families at the distribution sites. They love their babies and are so grateful for this help. It is a simple, but very needed program. Baby Basics continues to have a waiting list for families that would qualify. aby Basic uses over 100 volunteers locally B to provide this service. All monies raised from their fund raising and grants go to purchase diapers. The Community Foundation is their fiscal agent and those fees are paid through either interest on monies contributed or special donations for this purpose. Joyce Fletcher Community Grants Commission Rookery Bay Service Project n February 11 a group of 18 Trinitarians O spent a Saturday morning helping out at the Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, with a variety of clean-up projects. Prior to rolling up our sleeves, we were treated to an overview of the Research and Learning Center located on Tower Rd, just south of US 41 on the road to Marco Island (951). We learned that the management area of NERR includes most of Collier County. NERR is funded by the Dept. of Environmental Protection, Collier County and fundraising efforts. NERR works in cooperation with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida. It is simply amazing to witness the impact these mostly volunteer organizations have on protecting our waters and wetlands from exploitation and development. Rookery Bay itself contains more than 1,000 acres of undisturbed bays, mangroves and wildlife. Our assignment was to clean up the site in preparation of new facilities. We removed a pile of scrap wood and metal, stacked piping, picked up planters, and loaded a truck headed for the landfill. We were surprised by a 4 foot black snake that made one of the wood piles his home. Fr. Edward commented that it was too bad Fr. Michael wasn t with us, knowing his fondness for serpents! I was impressed by the way the Trinitarians worked together. Very little direction was needed to accomplish our task. We got to know and appreciate each other. We departed with new friendships and a good feeling about the contribution. The folks at NERR were most appreciative as well. I encourage you to visit the NERR Learning Center, especially with your children. Conservation is vital for future generations to enjoy the incredible surroundings we enjoy in Southwest Florida. 5 The Fine Art of Living, continued, he fundraisers culminated with A Starry Night in Provence, T chaired by Cecile Fenstermaker and Lisa McDonnell. Guests enjoyed a delightful evening of cocktails poolside at a club in Port Royal, serenaded by the sounds of an accordion, then dinner inside with music by DJ Ceron, who kept the party going and the dance floor full! Throughout the evening, guests marveled at the live painting by artist Juan Diaz, which was auctioned off to a lucky bidder at the end of the night. The Fine Art of Living in 2012 owes much of its success to its partners and individual donors, who were personally thanked at a Patron Party hosted by Salvatore Ferragamo in its store at Waterside Shops. Co-Chairs: Sandy Durant, Cecile Fenstermaker, Lisa McDonnell, Diane Moore Maundy Thursday Liturgy and Watch April 5th, 6:00 p.m. he Maundy Thursday Eucharist commemor a t e s t h e i n s t i t u t i o n o f t h e T Sacrament of Holy Communion and Christ s giving of the new commandment to love one another as he loved us. Although we are on the threshold of Good Friday, the Eucharist is celebrated with solemn joy. The celebrant begins and those present may follow in the sharing of the washing of feet as Jesus mandated. This is an expressive symbol of the coming of God s Kingdom through the ministry and service of his followers who are nourished by the heavenly food of his banquet table. The Altar of Repose reminds us of the Garden of Gethsemane, in which Jesus spent three agonizing hours between the Last Supper and his arrest. Additional bread and wine is consecrated at this Eucharist. This reserved sacrament is placed on the altar where it will remain until the Good Friday liturgy. Worshipers are encouraged to join in the Watch that continues throughout the night until Good Friday. The church remains open and parishioners are asked to keep the light burning while praying and/or meditating. Jesus asked his disciples, Could you not watch with me one hour? What is our reply? A roster for the Watch is posted in the Narthex. There is no limit on how many parishioners can sign up for a specific time frame and you may stay as long as you want. Coming this Month Good Friday April 6th, noon n this day, God s Friday, we falter O before the enormity of the Cross. The liturgy of Good Friday is a solemn time of remembering Christ s Passion. The Altar is bare and we kneel in silence. The silence is broken by prayer: Almighty God, we pray you graciously to behold this your family for which our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, given up into the hands of sinners and to suffer death upon the cross. In the readings we hear Isaiah s prophecy of the suffering Servant, we are reminded of Christ s perfect sacrifice, and finally, we stand on Calvary s hill at the foot of the Cross with St. John. In the silence, which accompanies each of the solemn collects, we are invited to join the pain and sorrows of humanity to Christ s suffering. A cross is brought into our midst, the symbol of God s great outpouring of love for us. By your Holy Cross, you have redeemed the world. We confess our sins and pray the Lord s. There is no Eucharist on this day. Instead, we receive Holy Communion from the sacrament consecrated the night before on Maundy Thursday. We give thanks and leave in silence.
