The Rector Dear Friends, Season has started with a bang! Over 400 parishioners attended one of the eight Neighborhood Gatherings last month. The Women of Trinity hosted the Christmas Market for the 58 th year. A myriad of Christian Formation opportunities, the most in the parish s history, have started. And recently, Trinity-by-the-Cove hosted its first Du Athlon with over 50 participants, half of which were guests from the wider Naples community. Our well respected Concert Series begins this month with two wonderful Christmas Concerts given by our talented Director of Music and splendid Choir. While the media continues to tell us most every day that the world and our country are in historic turmoil, life here at Trinity-by-the-Cove is thriving. This issue of the Trinitarian gives you a glimpse of more ministry offerings and opportunities. Our ministry is not merely for ourselves, the Service Commission has a wonderful service day planned this month and our Christmas offering will once again be directed to Habitat for Humanity. The Fine Art of Living initiative for 2014 is approaching and invitations will soon be mailed. Here again, the focus is serving our local community through funds raised for the Archangel Fund for Collier County Charities. The Grant Commission is beginning their important work of determining the receipts of the 2014 grants. Surely we can be agents of hope for each other, our community and world. Not only does our parish enable and empower us to do so, as baptized Christians we are called to go forth into the world rejoicing in the power of the Spirit to proclaim the Good News our world is so desperate to hear. Find your place here at Trinity-by-the-Cove to learn, grow and serve. There is room for everyone! Page 2 December, 2013

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Do you know what Jonah, Moses, and Isaiah all have in common? A ll were prophets. In Deuteronomy 18:18-19, God says, I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. And like these three, many prophets were reluctant to follow God s calling. Moses didn t think he could talk to God s people because he stuttered. Jonah didn t want to go to Ninevah to preach to the people, and we know where he ended up. And Isaiah said he had unclean lips; ask our 4 th and 5 th graders what happened to him. (Isaiah 6:1-8 ) The prophets may have been ordinary people, but it was their response to God s call that made them extraordinary. From the earliest days in the atrium, the children hear about the prophets being people who listen to God with all of their heart, mind, and soul, and who then tell this message to God s people. During Advent we hear the prophets listening to God and then telling God s people the message of the coming Messiah. The people who walk in darkness have seen a great Light. (Is 9:2) While the people of Israel have been waiting hundreds of years for their Savior, our children also hear the prophecies while waiting the four weeks of Advent. Now, through Bible study, the older children in the atrium are reading the scriptures about the prophets Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel and Amos. Together, we have wondered why it was such an important job in Israel s history and we began to understand that when a period of darkness gathered over the people of Israel, it was the prophets who taught them how to look into the depth of their history. There, the people of Israel would begin to feel the presence of the Lord in which He continued to say: I love you with an everlasting love. Through our readings, we all agree that this probably wasn t a very easy job, and that perhaps it was not always comfortable or popular. Sometimes the words of the prophets (God s words) were scolding and admonishing, and people didn t want to hear that. We too can understand their thoughts, Why am I doing this? However, while reading God s call to each prophet, we also realized that while God may call the prophets to difficult tasks, He also equips and empowers them. Jeremiah s excuse to ignore the call was that he was only a boy. Even our children wonder, Why would he use a young boy for such a task? But God touches Jeremiah s lips and gives him the words to say. What a gift! While Ezekiel is not young, he is told to go and deliver angry words to the God s rebellious people. Ezekiel s words come while eating a scroll, a scroll filled with words of lamentation, and mourning and woe. But amazingly enough, as the words are digested they become part of Ezekiel and wow, they taste like honey! While the prophets may seem reluctant to follow God s call, He is persistent and still uses them and sustains them through the difficult times. The Lord called adults and young people, cultured and uncultured people, priests and non-priests to be prophets. We asked the children, I wonder what these Old Testament prophets can tell us about God s call in our own life, today? Are we listening with our whole heart, mind and soul? Are we reluctant to answer? Why is He so persistent? Do we trust Him to be with us, always, and to empower us? Can He really work through me? I wonder! Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen (BCP, proper 28)

Advent Advent is a word that comes to us from Latin and means coming, and we take it to mean the coming of Christ. In the Church, we take the four Sundays before Christmas (the Advent Season) to think and pray about the coming of Jesus Christ. Part of what Advent is about is putting the focus on Christmas and that wonderful eve when we come to church, sing carols, have great dinner feasts, and exchange gifts. We also pray about Jesus coming again in glory. To make Christmas all the more joyful, we spend our time in Advent by being a little bit more solemn and somber. We do this in church by wearing blue vestments and by changing some of the words we say. To help families mark Advent and prepare well for Christmas, Trinity-by-the-Cove offers two unique devotionals with art and insight to emphasize family prayer, family togetherness, the beauty of religious art, and the biblical themes of Advent. Advent Placemats and Lessons & Carols To encourage families with busy schedules to sit down for family dinner, say grace and spend time talking about God, Advent Placemats are available. There is a different placemat for each Sunday in Advent. The placemats are sold in sets of 4 for $10 and include an online Advent Devotional based on Lessons and Carols. Proceeds benefit Children s Ministry. Page 4 December, 2013 Advent Cards Teaching Children the Beauty of Notes Christmas cards are always a popular way to extend warm wishes and loving care during the Christmas Season. In an age when and texting provide instant connection, the handwritten note and joy of receiving a card in the mail stand as a unique and meaningful way to express the joy of Christmas and the importance of thoughtful preparation. The cards are sold in sets of 4 for $5 (proceeds supporting Children s Ministry) and include a devotional that should be used weekly in concert with Sunday worship the themes in the cards and in the Scripture readings are taken from Scripture read in church during the Sundays in Advent. The devotional is intended to be used on a night of the week, during or after dinner time, maybe at bedtime, when the family gathers to read through the devotional, and offer prayer as a family. As part of the prayer time, use the Advent Cards to write notes to family and friends as you pray for them. By doing so, children should feel more concrete and focused in their prayers. The Art: After imagining the concept of the cards, an artist in Ocean Springs, Mississippi named Magtilt van Thiel was asked to create artwork that would give children beautiful images that would engage them.

Advent Daily Devotions for the Season of Advent Available in the Parish Hall The season of Advent begins on Sunday, December 1 st this year. This year we have three resources for your Advent devotional reading. The views of these readings vary from the Incarnation to a historical view from the prophecies to the elements in our daily lives that provide meaning to this special season. A WORLD AWAITS DAILY REFLECTIONS FOR ADVENT FROM THE WORKS OF C.S. LEWIS As a young man, C.S. Lewis considered himself an atheist, far too logical and clearheaded to ever believe in something so fanciful as the Incarnation of God in human form. But when a powerful conversion experience took over, Lewis became one of the foremost defenders of Christianity, without ever losing his preference for clear and logical thinking. Follow Lewis in this booklet of daily Advent reflections, and your celebration of Christmas will never be the same. FAITHFUL FACTS FOR ADVENT BY PAUL L. MAIER Respected Christian historian, professor and theologian Paul L. Maier helps readers travel back in time to the first Christmas in these daily devotions for Advent that utilize facts from history confirming our faith in Jesus. Each day readers will learn something new about the prophecies and fulfillments of Jesus' birth that can then be applied to our faith today, bringing home the reality of Christ's presence with us at this time in history. ELEMENTS OF ADVENT BY RON GLUSENKAMP Like many seasons in our lives, the season of Advent is comprised of many elements that work together to provide a particular tone, structure and environment to Christians who are preparing for the birth of the Savior. Each day of Advent explore the meaning behind elements such as candles, music, story, promise and readiness that enrich our experience of bonding with our Lord during this busy time. The Rev. Alice Sadler Page 5 December, 2013

Advent Service Day On Friday, December 6th, you have an opportunity to sign-up for one of several different service projects. We kick off the day at church at 8 a.m., head out to volunteer serving others, and gather back in the parish hall at 5 pm for wrap-up and dinner. SERVICE PROJECTS 1. IMMOKALEE CHILD CARE CENTER: Light garden work including planting flowers, mulching and arranging the layout for an Outdoor Classroom. Volunteers are asked to bring their favorite garden tools and gloves. Lunch will be provided. We expect the project times will be 9 AM to 12. Five volunteers are needed. The Trinity Community Grant Commission provides financial support to the Immokalee Child Care Center this year. 2. IMMOKALEE COMMUNITY CENTER needs help with a large mailing for Interfaith Action of Southwest Florida, a partner organization of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers. The work will begin at 1 PM. If possible, the volunteers who went to the Child Care Center in the morning could also perform this task so we can reduce the number of trips to Immokalee. Please consider volunteering for both Immokalee Projects. 5 volunteers are needed. 3. SALVATION ARMY Christmas packages preparation for distribution to needy families. We will have two shifts: 9 AM -12 PM and 1PM -3 PM. We need 5 volunteers for each shift. The Toy Shop is located at 2975 Horseshoe Drive South. 4. NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTH CLINIC located on Goodlette-Frank near downtown Naples. We have two projects: A. Kitchen clean-up and organization will require 5 volunteers from 9 AM - 12 noon. B. Medical supplies inventory and organization will require 8 volunteers from 9AM until 12 noon (Estimated time required). 5. PACT TRAINING SESSION for new Pre-K Literacy volunteers to teach Parents how to read books to their Pre-K child. This Project is sponsored by the Literacy Volunteers of Collier County. The classes will be help at Parkside Elementary School in East Naples during a 6 week period starting in January. Classes are conducted for 1.5 hrs. twice a week for the 6 weeks. Tutors need to be at the school from 1 PM - 3 PM two days per week. The days of the week are flexible. The class includes the parent(s) and the Pre-K student. This program enables the parent to learn to read 12 books to their child. In addition to improving the English literacy of both parent and child, bonding and respect are enhanced. Collier County Schools has recognized the PACT project as an important new element in reading improvement for the many children of non-english speaking parents. They want to spread the program to the other elementary schools such as Shadowlawn, Avalon, Golden Gate and Manatee. We are seeking at least 4 volunteers but the number for the class is unlimited! All Service volunteers are encouraged to consider this ministry and attend the training session Jim Wheeler, Service Commission Chair, jw2447@me.com; , or Page 6 December, 2013

This will be a perfect opportunity to reflect on the bishop's insights and spend some time in contemplation away from the holiday frenzy. You'll find this time set apart just one week before Christmas to be a welcome reminder of why the celebration of the birth of Christ is so important to us. The Daughters of the King invite you to come for a continental breakfast at 9:00 in the parish hall, gather in the church for Holy Eucharist at 9:30 and stay for Bishop Smith's guidance on "The Spirituality of Advent". Currently there are 90 children in the school who because of our help attend the school, have decent clothing and two hot meals a day. Purchasing a scholarship for $275 covers the expense for one child to attend for a full year and keeps them off the streets where they would be without your help. This is Trinity s eighth year assisting the school and Trinitarians have been very generous in their support of this world mission project. These scholarships make a meaningful gift for family members and friends. Parkside Elementary School This year, we are starting a new Christmas giving opportunity for you to share in. Each classroom teacher at Parkside has chosen a book that he/she especially would like to have in their classroom. Starting December 8th, the books will be on display in the parish hall and you will be able to purchase one of the books for a nominal $10-15 each; inscribe it to the school classroom; and gift it to Parkside. Many of the children who attend Parkside are not fortunate to have a lot of proper books in their homes and it is a blessing for us to be able to help build up the classroom libraries.
