1 November, 2013 You ve heard the slogan Trinitarians Together Make a Difference! It s not a what it is a how... 2 Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Night in the Atrium Have you seen the movie, Night at the Museum; the one where the exhibits come alive at night? I wonder what it would be like if the Works in the Atrium came to life one night. Well, Trinity s fourth and fifth graders found out what goes on at night once the atrium has closed. On October 5 th they spent an evening in the Living Bread Atrium. And although the Works did not come alive, thirteen boys and girls were very much alive while learning the names of new friends; Making name tags while searching under the stars for treasures and while sharing bread (well eating pizza); all the while flocking in green pastures, (sometimes with birds of a pink feather). Making fruit kabobs While the atrium works do not come alive in the Hollywood sense, they are very much alive for our children. By the living breath of God, we all are called by name to be in a living, loving relationship with our Good Shepherd. We do not have to pretend to be sheep frolicking in a pasture. We are His sheep! We do not need to imagine what it would be like for wise men to follow a star, bringing gifts to a child in a manger. This Gift of love lives in our hearts every day! Nor do we have to remember what it would be like to share a meal with Jesus. He is present with us in the bread and the wine at the Eucharist. As we spend time in the atrium with our works and with scripture, we are the ones who come to life in this Story! Shhh.. don t tell Fr. Michael and Mrs. Basden! 3 Sunday Adult Formation ENCORE! ENCORE! PAUL: HIS LIFE, TIMES AND LETTERS WITH JOHN HUSHON We have had such rave reviews about John Hushon s class about Paul that we are extending the series. The five sessions on Paul (originally scheduled for Oct 13, Oct 20, Oct 27, Nov 3 and Nov 17) will expand to a series of eight sessions. We will be adding Nov 24, Dec 8 and Dec 15. Sessions 1-5, as described in the original notice in the Trinitarian will remain approximately the same. One of the difficulties of attempting to cover Paul in five short sessions is that we don t actually spend much time reading the letters themselves, except for 1 Corinthians. We therefore plan to apply the methodology of the first six sessions in reading 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians and Ephesians to demonstrate the potential richness of the method in bringing forth understanding of Paul s practical theology as it applies to personal morality, Christology, creed, and formation of community and church. We will be adding the following: Session 6 (November 24): Conclusion and Discussion of the Historical and Biographical Material Summary of Paul s Practical Theology Guidelines for Reading a Letter Session 7 (December 8) Discussion of 1 and 2 Thessalonians based upon the Historical Critical Method Session 8 (December 15) Discussion of Ephesians based upon the Historical Critical Method The Rev. Alice Sadler Associate Rector Page 3 November, 2013

10 Advent Advent is a word that comes to us from Latin and means coming, and we take it to mean the coming of Christ. In the Church, we take the four Sundays before Christmas (the Advent Season) to think and pray about the coming of Jesus Christ. Part of what Advent is about is putting the focus on Christmas and that wonderful eve when we come to church, sing carols, have great dinner feasts, and exchange gifts. We also pray about Jesus coming again in glory. To make Christmas all the more joyful, we spend our time in Advent by being a little bit more solemn and somber. We do this in church by wearing blue vestments and by changing some of the words we say. To help families mark Advent and prepare well for Christmas, Trinity-by-the-Cove offers two unique devotionals with art and insight to emphasize family prayer, family togetherness, the beauty of religious art, and the biblical themes of Advent. Advent Placemats and Lessons & Carols To encourage families with busy schedules to sit down for family dinner, say grace and spend time talking about God, Advent Placemats are available. There is a different placemat for each Sunday in Advent. The placemats are sold in sets of 4 for $10 and include an online Advent Devotional based on Lessons and Carols. Proceeds benefit Children s Ministry. Advent Cards Teaching Children the Beauty of Notes Christmas cards are always a popular way to extend warm wishes and loving care during the Christmas Season. In an age when and texting provide instant connection, the handwritten note and joy of receiving a card in the mail stand as a unique and meaningful way to express the joy of Christmas and the importance of thoughtful preparation. The cards are sold in sets of 4 for $5 (proceeds supporting Children s Ministry) and include a devotional that should be used weekly in concert with Sunday worship the themes in the cards and in the Scripture readings are taken from Scripture read in church during the Sundays in Advent. The devotional is intended to be used on a night of the week, during or after dinner time, maybe at bedtime, when the family gathers to read through the devotional, and offer prayer as a family. As part of the prayer time, use the Advent Cards to write notes to family and friends as you pray for them. By doing so, children should feel more concrete and focused in their prayers. The Art: After imagining the concept of the cards, an artist in Ocean Springs, Mississippi named Magtilt van Thiel was asked to create artwork that would give children beautiful images that would engage them.
