3 Pentecost Sunday Page 3 A Message from our Pastor Father Cesar Ageas He will give you another Advocate to be with you always! Last Sunday, when the Solemnity of the Ascension was celebrated, Jesus promised His disciples to send the Holy Spirit. Such promise was already made by Jesus to His apostles at the Last Supper, as related to us in today s gospel. This Sunday s celebration of the Solemnity of the Pentecost is the fulfillment of what Jesus promised them- the Descent of the Holy Spirit, which in our liturgy marks the end of the Easter Season. In the First Reading, from the Acts of the Apostles, on Pentecost Day- 50 th day after the Resurrection of Jesus, the Holy Spirit came down on the Apostles as a roaring wind and tongues of fire- symbols of life and power. Through the Holy Spirit, God s divine life and invincible power enlighten the minds and warm the hearts of the Apostles. They were no longer afraid to face the world. Confident on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, the Apostles were out and speaking out faithfully and courageously. We have also received the Holy Spirit. We received him at our baptism and confirmation. Bishops, priests, and deacons received him at their ordination. But all of us have received the Holy Spirit. More than ever, we the need the gifts of the Holy Spirit for us to fulfill our baptismal promises to be witnesses of the Gospel and instruments in building up God s kingdom. With the Psalmist let us pray: Lord send out your Spirit and renew the face of the earth. God bless! Fr. Cesar Ageas Camp Pendola Summer Day Camp in Colfax Camp Pendola is offering a summer DAY camp program to area children this summer at the Trinity Pines Catholic Center in Colfax. Children entering 1 st through 6 th grade in the fall can choose from one or two fun-filled weeks Weird Science from July 11 to July 15 and Amazing Race from July 18 to July 22 from 9 to 3:30 each day. Both weeks include swim lessons, archery, nature exploration, arts and crafts, large group games, music and skits. The cost per week per child is $150. Write a letter of forgiveness to someone. If you cannot send it, sprinkle it with holy water, ask Christ to have mercy on you both and then burn or bury it. 2.) Have masses said for the living: friends and family members, even strangers you read/hear about, who are having a hard time. 3.) If you didn t mean to be a pain in the neck to someone, admit you were and ask the person to forgive you. 4.) Offer to babysit for a busy mom to go out and have a couple of hours to herself. But many people, including Christians, may not know why the day is special or what is celebrated. Unlike Easter and Christmas, when colorful eggs, Easter bunnies, Christmas trees and Santa Claus are harbingers of the upcoming Christian holidays, there are no such social markers by secular society ahead of Pentecost. For those who need a quick and basic understanding of what Pentecost Sunday is, below is listed 10 things you should know about the holiday. 1. Pentecost Sunday marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. 2. Pentecost Sunday occurs 50 days after Easter. 3. The Bible records the Pentecost in Acts 2: Pentecost comes 10 days after the Ascension of Jesus Christ. 5. Pentecost is also known as "the birthday of the Church" 6. Pentecost fulfills Jesus' promise to send the "Counselor" and "Spirit of Truth" in John Pentecost launches the large-scale spreading of the Gospel after Jesus' ascension. Acts 2:41 records that after Peter spoke to the crowd after receiving the Holy Spirit, some 3,000 people were baptized. 8. The Pentecostal movement derives its name from the New Testament event in Acts Jews also celebrate Pentecost, but not for the same reason as Christians. The celebration by Jews of Pentecost is to observe God giving the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai 50 days after the Exodus. The Pentecost in Jewish tradition takes place 50 days after Passover. 10. In Western Churches, Pentecost is usually represented with the color red, which symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit.
