3 Page 3 A Reflection from our Deacon Mark Ruiz Don t Skip Advent Everyone faces the temptation of fast forwarding their attention and concern to Christmas, and many times that takes them off track, focusing on shopping and family logistics instead of the Reason for the Season. Advent is an opportunity for each of us to meditate on the Reason for the Season and help others to do so as well (hint: the Reason is not presents, despite what your children tell you). It is a time for reflecting on our sins and asking Our Lord to continue to redeem us from them. If there s some point of spiritual growth with which we are struggling, Advent is a time not only to work on it but to pray unceasingly for the Lord s help in overcoming it. If we ve become estranged from someone we love (or loved), we can ask Our Lord to help us to become reconciled. Shopping and family logistics are a reality of this season, but they also provide a spiritual opportunity to go out of our way for others. All the organizing, planning, budgeting, wrapping, etc. is to express your love for someone, and in loving others, you love Christ. Don t forget to include something for someone who may have no one to love them. Remember Jesus told St. Faustina- Daughter, when you go to confession, to this fountain of My mercy, the Blood and Water which came forth from My Heart always flows down upon your soul and ennobles it. Every time you go to confession, immerse yourself entirely in My mercy, with great trust, so that I may pour the bounty of My grace upon your soul. When you approach the confessional, know this, that I Myself am waiting there for you. I am only hidden by the priest, but I myself act in your soul. Here the misery of the soul meets the God of mercy. Tell souls that from this fount of mercy souls draw graces solely with the vessel of trust. St. Nicholas a A young woman rolled down her window at the abortion facility Butano Drive, the location of our Sacramento 40 Days for Life. She reached out to take the packet of information, which includes details about Alternatives Pregnancy Center and the Sacramento Life Center. I showed her the Fetal Models, which convey the exact size and development of a baby at 7-10 weeks of pregnancy. She teared up... "Oh how I wish someone had been here when I had my abortion. I wouldn't have done it." I held her hand to comfort her. We prayed together through her tears, gently conveying God's message of mercy, grace, love, and forgiveness to a contrite young heart. I gave her information about post-abortion healing programs and a Precious Feet Pin so that she would have something by which to remember her baby. She is now equipped to share her " I-would-never-do-that-again" message with her friends and family members who may come to her for advice about an unexpected pregnancy. Saving lives, helping the needy and consoling the hurting are why we are there. Please join us at the Sidewalk at 2322 Butano Drive, on abortion mornings, Wednesdays and Fridays year-round, 8:00 am to 11:00 am. It is a time of contemplation about our Messiah that brings into focus 'the reason for the season' in a very beautiful, peaceful, and joyful way. At 8pm, following the service, there will be a friendly gathering in the Parish Hall, where we'll enjoy shared refreshments. All are welcome-- please extend a warm invitation to non-catholic family and friends! Sock Drive for the Homeless Our St. Joseph committee for St. Vincent de Paul is serving Christmas dinner at the local homeless shelter this year. We would like to hand out a new pair of warm socks as a gift to each needy guest that night and are thinking it will be extra nice if the small gifts come from our fellow parishioners. A collection basket will be placed next to the Giving Tree starting this weekend and will be there for your donations of new wintery socks until we pick them up on Sunday, the 17th. We realize you are asked for a lot of donations, especially this year with so many in need. We thank you in advance for your participation in this charitable activity!
